Reading City of Ashes and enjoying it. Just finished Beta Colony, an old, old science fiction book but very good.

Today I went somewhere I have never been before, the Fantasy and Sci-Fi section of my public library. I was actually was looking for something else, a DVD of Torchwood but wandered into this section. I was amazed at the number of books there and ones I recognized from the many threads in this group. Big score, I found Perdido Street Station (Bas-Lag) AND The Blade Itself. I wasn't going to do either group read this month and catch up on my TBR pile. I saw it as a sign that I had to read both books so I checked them out. Hooray! Need to finish Monster Hunter International. Its very entertaining!
I really enjoyed Monster Hunter International. (My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...) It's sort of a niche filler if you're looking for humor and a sort of urban fantasy in a single book. I like it and will probably snap up anything else the author writes.

Great review. I know I will like it now because of what you said about comparing it to the Dresden books. I loved Storm Front. Also I liked what you said about "brain candy". Its good to read something just for pure entertainment value. I do it all the time and am proud of it!
Me to. And I'm A huge Dresden fan. I'm in withdrawal because they pushed the release date on the next Dresden book back to July!
Good for me....gives me time to catch up. I got the 2nd one in my TBR pile, close to the top of the pile.
I found them when the Science Fiction Book Club put out some omnibus editions. I think it was the first 7 volumes and I burned through them one after another.
Yikes, that's a lot of books. I don't think I will get thru 11 books by July with all my other reading. I like to jump around a lot.
Short stories too. Butcher is prolific. Do you think he's been able to keep the later books as imaginative and fun as the first?
To each. There are some books I kick to the top, so far the Dresdens are among them. By the way, I think (and I've read others who say the same) the books get better as they go along. Storm Front reads very much like a stand alone though he builds on it. But as the books advance they grow. The second (Fool Moon)is probably the (in my opinion) the weakest, but still good. I think they really kick into gear in Summer Knight(#4). Favorite series right now anyway. :)
Actually he's one of the few authors whose series I think improves with time. I really liked his first effort but I've loved his most recent novels :)
I'm reading The Immortal Prince by Jennifer Fallon for now, but I'm so excited about this months book The Blade Itself. Unfortunately I won't have Perdido Street Station (Bas-Lag) by March, but I can't to wait to read The Blade Itself. I've been hearing and reading great reviews about it.
I also wanted to re-read aSoIaF because I really want to refresh my memory for when the HBO series comes out.
Is anyone re-reading aSoIaF ?
Christine I actually posted that post before I saw your question... He also has a second series, more traditional epic type fantasy. The Codex Alera I don't like them quite as much as the Dresden books but I do like them a lot.
Its so hard to pick favorites. I really like the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich but they are of another genre. They are pretty silly but make me laugh out loud. Dresden can do that too. I'm pretty excited to read more but hesitant to say something is a fav until I read a few more books in the series. I think its easy for an author to get complacent after a while.
Finished We Have Always Lived in the Castle. I really enjoyed her writing and I'm processing it. I like writing that makes me want to process it. Starting The Painted Bird. I'm really looking forward to it. I might add finishing Cows to it. Normally, I can juggle books, but lately I've been wanting to focus on one book at a time.
Aloha, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is one of my all time favorites! I really hope you liked it. Even months after reading it, I still find it powerful.
Laurel, I will definitely read more of Shirley Jackson's writing. The Painted Bird is powerful even based on the author's introduction alone. He described the strong reaction his novel stirred, and its huge impact on his family. I'm at the very beginning of the story of the 6 year old boy. My heart ached for him. I must have a more well-developed empathy in my old age, because this stirred me more than when I was reading about the Holocaust as a pre-teen.

I read some Shirley Jackson in my younger days and always wanted to read "Castle". I should put that on my list...I finally finished Perdido Street Station for the discussion here, and got a copy of The Blade Itself. I am trying to finish up return of the crimson guard before I start Cold Hand in Mine
Maggie, how do you like Perdido Street Station? I kept on trying to read a Melville, but things keep knocking it off the list.
I did not even realize that I have a first edition paperback copy of We Have Always Lived in the Castle until I cleaned out my bookshelf today. Plan to read the book soon.
I really liked it for the most part Aloha--did think it got a bit over descriptive in a bunch of spots though...with some editing it would have been 5 star
ACtually, having seen what you say you like, my guess is you will probably really like it once it gets going.:)
Mieville can be really bad for those over descriptions. Like Maggie said. Once you get used to those descriptions, though, you find yourself in a rich and strange world that's fun to be in.
Just finished City of Ashes. Wonderful read. Looking forward to City of Glass and the prequel Clockwork Angel.
Just finished Monster Hunter International and Alanna: The First Adventure last night. Two very different but very good books. Not really sure what I'm going to read next, I have too many choices! :-)
I'm currently about 1/2 through The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson and I am LOVING this series. I can't believe I waited so long to read it. Jeez. I'm also still working on the audio for The Dark Tower by Stephen King.
Next up is a book that I got for review: This Vacant Paradise: A Novel by Victoria Patterson. Looks interesting. I hope it's good. :)
Then Little Bee by Chris Cleave, which I am really looking forward to. :D
Such a good week coming up :) I just finished Hero in the Shadows (Drenai Tales, #9), White Wolf (Drenai Tales, #10), Angry Lead Skies, Mistborn: The Final Empire(which I Really enjoyed), The Gunslinger(which I found Really hard to get through) and The First Book of Swords. Some I enjoyed, some were somewhat disappointing. This week however should be amazing. The Wise Man's Fear, The Crippled God and The Heroes all in the same week, all first reads. *sigh* I doubt I'll have a better reading week the entire stinking year but by god what a way to celebrate my upcoming bday :)
I find myself strangely disappointed that I am waiting for nothing... I love the anticipation of a finally-released next in the series...lol But I dont care about The Wise Man's Fear and I still have a book or two to catch up on both Malazan and FIrst Law
Jason wrote (way back in the 1st post!): "Next, I'm thinking of continuing my rereading of Jordan's WoT series by picking up book 8" I reread the series from the beginning up to book 8. Took a year's break, just starting book 9, Winter's Heart - reading it for the first time.
Youre in for a treat Weenie. The books take a real upswing when Sanderson takes the reins.
Grant, are you planning to continue on with the Dark Tower series? The Gunslinger is difficult for many people to get into, but the 2nd book of the series, The Drawing of the Three, is much more exciting. I love the entire series, including The Gunslinger, but I think that The Gunslinger isn't the best representation of what the series is actually like.
I agree with Becky. I just finished the series and loved it. I did not (initially) love Gunslinger, it was hard for me to get through as well. But oddly enough, now that I've finished the series, I feel like I would appreciate Gunslinger so much more. I kind of want to re-read it right away! And even without re-reading it, my opinion of it has greatly improved.
Finished The Painted Bird. I'd say it's a book that's a definition of existentialism, of continuing to live and exist, of trying to find meaning even amidst seemingly meaningless and chaotic events and tragedies. I'll write a review of it as soon a I process it. There's a lot to talk about in this book. Pretty intense.I'm starting The Blade Itself. Fantasy Aficionado's March epic fantasy read. This should be a nice, fun contrast to the last book.
Jeez, how do you do that??! LOL I'm lucky if I get in 3-4 books a week. If I ever run into you, please show me the back of your neck (I'll be looking for the upload buttons, lol)Grant wrote: "Such a good week coming up :) I just finished Hero in the Shadows (Drenai Tales, #9), White Wolf (Drenai Tales, #10), Angry Lead Skies, [book:Mistborn: Th..."
I can't help myself, I have to start on Monster Hunter Vendetta, the first one was very good. I started reading Pawn of Prophecy last night and I think I want to start on Gardens of the Moon but I need to read The Blade Itself. I really want to read Mistborn: The Final Empire but where is all my time?!I'm also reading a YA series I enjoyed as a kid: The Song of the Lioness Quartet.
Grant (and other parents), you should read this series. It may be something you would be interested in reading to your daughter.
MrsJ - I'm reading Hero of Ages right now, and I am loving the Mistborn series. Do it! You know you wanna! :D
I'm not the one you should be saying that to. Talk to Grant. I'm thinking he put a book over his forehead in his sleep, and the content goes into his brain via osmosis.MrsJoseph wrote: "Jeez, how do you do that??! LOL I'm lucky if I get in 3-4 books a week. I just posted this in another group, and even thought I feel a little silly double posting the exact same thing... What the heck, I want to post it here too :)I'm currently reading The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, should be finishing it today.
Next will be Little Bee and then Heart-Shaped Box. Then, when I finally have my pre-order of The Wise Man's Fear in hand, I'll be re-reading The Name of the Wind followed directly by that. I also want to squeeze in The Blade Itself and maybe Elantris or Warbreaker too. And maybe some others.. Should be an awesome month!
