Wilhelmina Jenkins | 2049 comments The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards were established in 1935 to recognize books that have made important contributions to our understanding of racism and our appreciation of the rich diversity of human cultures.

The 2010 winners are are:

* Kamila Shamsie, Burnt Shadows: A Novel, for Fiction
* Elizabeth Alexander, Lifetime Achievement in Poetry
*William Julius Wilson, sociologist, Lifetime Achievement in Nonfiction
* Oprah Winfrey, Lifetime Achievement

Elizabeth Alexander is probably best known for the poem she read at Barack Obama's inauguration,
Praise Song For The Day: A Poem For Barack Obama's Presidential Inauguration January 20, 2009.

Shamsie is a Pakistani novelist and Burnt Shadows, her fifth novel, was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for fiction for 2009.
