Christopher Bunn | 5 comments Hi all,
I'm a lifelong fantasy fan, ever since I was a kid and read the Narnia Chronicles. I moved on from there to Susan Cooper, Lloyd Alexander, Andre Norton, Tolkien (of course), McKinley and McKillip. It's a great genre and it's exciting to see all the fabulous new books being written in it. All for now.
Christopher

John Beachem | 9 comments Huh, I just realized I never actually introduced myself on this group.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a resident of lovely, snow-capped Colorado, and an avid consumer of all things fantasy. I love the works of George R.R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, Martin Millar, Steven Erikson, Janny Wurts, Randall Garrett, and many, many more. I've been feasting upon this excellent genre since I was about six years old, and first read Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia. I'm also the proud parent of two children. The oldest, [Book: Storms of Vengeance], is about four years old and is currently running around Goodreads. The youngest, [Book: The Hunter and the Marked], is only a few months old and new to the site. Looking forward to reading and discussing some fine series with you all.

Nice to hear from you. Are you going to put your books up on Kindle anytime soon?
Christopher

message 55: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) Welcome, Alex. Looking forward to your thoughts as you join us in reading Malazan! :)

Hi Christopher, the Kindle issue is a bit... err... tricky. The second book is readily available on Kindle. The first book is available on Nook, and never the two shall meet. It's a bit irksome. The first book is only available in PDF format. I know it's possible to read PDF format on the Nook, but I don't know if it can be done on the Kindle...

I did find one thing, though. The site, fictionwise.com has it in e-format and claims to be Kindle compatible... whatever that means. Hope that helps.

message 57: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Bunn | 5 comments I just downloaded the Kindle sample of the second book. I'll check out fictionwise when I get a moment. Best of luck!

I have both one and two on the Nook. In epub format.

message 59: by Darrell (new)

Darrell (darrellr) | 5 comments I guess it would only be proper to say hello myself so....

Hi there. I'm Darrell from the hot and humid Houston, TX. I basically read anything really from fantasy to romance to suspense to mystery. If it has a good story to tell then I want to read it, heh. Though honestly I have been all about fantasy lately from Martin (well been a while on that one but we know why...), Abercrombie, Erikson, etc.

Obviously I am parent from my avatar picture alone. Married for thirteen years now with three little ones who hopefully will pick up dad's habit on reading. Only my son has a bit in him now but the video games always win out.

I look forward to learning more about the group and from the group.

message 60: by John (new)

John Beachem | 9 comments Hi Darrell, welcome to the group. Best of luck prying your children away from video games to enjoy a good book. If you figure out the secret you could write a best-seller :).

This is true! I seem to be the only one with the reading gene in my family. One daughter goes on occasional brief binges.

Jon (ftsj) | 6 comments Hello the names Tom. What about George RR Martin? No sole person has yet to say A Song Of Ice and Fire. For today though I go with Raymond Feist as my favorite because George Martin is brutal. Also I am from the North United States a.k.a. Alaska! I LIKE TURTLES! A Game of Thrones

Welcome, Tom.

Did you recently move south, because you're profile says you live in New Jersey? :)

Looking forward to your comments on Feist's work, since we're currently reading his Riftwar Saga series.

message 64: by Jacen (new)

Jacen Hey just joined from the FBC mostly a lurker when it comes to goodreads but starting to be a little more active in the groups I'm a member of.

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi everyone (-:
I'm Elena and I'm from Bexhill, England. I've only just discovered Goodreads and made an account. I read a variety of books, but fantasy is my favourite so I decided to join a Fantasy group! :)

message 68: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments Hello, everyone! Welcome. This group reads and discusses fantasy series. We're a sister group to Fantasy Book Club.

message 69: by John (new)

John Beachem | 9 comments Welcome to the group, Elena. Glad to have you aboard :-).

message 70: by Jea0126 (new)

Jea0126 | 2 comments My name is Jason and, I am also an avid reader. I'll stick with my jea0126 so as not to be confused with any other Jasons. I live just outside of Chattanooga, TN. I consider myself fairly well read in the fantasy genre and tend to read mainly in it. I do like some other authors including Clive Cussler, Michael Crichton (RIP), and John Grisham.

My favorite authors are:
Terry Goodkind (Mostly the first 4 of Sword of Truth)
Robert Jordan (Mostly the first 5-6 of Wheel of Time)
Mercedes Lackey
Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (The Death Gate)
Christopher Stasheff - Wizard in Rhyme series
Christopher Rowley - Bazil Broketail series
Fred Saberhagen - The Swords books
Robin Hobb - Farseer and Tawny Man series
Raymond Feist - the ones with Mara are the best
Jennifer Fallon
Melanie Rawn
Brent Weeks

plus some others.

message 72: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 14, 2011 07:02PM) (new)

Hello all. My name is Grant. I'm unusual I suppose in that I'm not a member of the FBC...just a bit too large for my taste. I tend to prefer a more casual closeknit group so I've been rather hesitant to branch out from Fantasy Aficianado's. Maggie managed to lure me here with promises of a Malazan re-read and after browsing a bit this place and the folks it contains seems like it may be a fit.

I suppose you could call me a bit of a fantasy snob. I've read most genres but fantasy is my true love and I don't think I'd be stretching the truth to say I've read 90% of the fantasy novels in print. My long term goal is to read 20,000 novels before I leave this Earth. *grins* Dream big, eh.

I'm pleased to see some folks I know and hope to get to know those whom I don't.

message 73: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments Hi Grant. This series group is pretty small. FBC is big but only a small percentage of folks participate. Welcome! I was lurking at Fantasy Aficionado and saw some of your posts.

message 74: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you Sandra :) Lol...it's not hard to find my posts there. I tend not to mind sharing my opinion in the least ;) It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the GR world works

message 75: by Chris (last edited Mar 14, 2011 07:32PM) (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 111 comments Hey Grant. You should like it here.

We're having a discussion on the Riftwar series too, you might have noticed. I'll let Dawn twist your arm to join in though.

message 76: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) *twists*

You know you wanna... There are cookies!

message 77: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) Welcome, Grant. I predict you will love it here. :)

message 78: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol...heya all. Appreciate the welcome. I'm slowly making my way around the place and see plenty of intelligent discussion which makes me feel right at home.

@ Dawn...hmmm....Cookies you say?

message 79: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) Chocolate chip. Or peanut butter if you like those better. Or oatmeal raisin. Any which way, I make awesome cookies!

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh I'm a sucker for Peanut Butter. Lol. I'm a bit of a baker myself. We'll have to swap recipes sometime ;)

message 81: by John (new)

John Beachem | 9 comments Sorry for the lateness. Welcome to Jason and Grant. Hope you enjoy the group.

message 82: by Joël (new)

Joël (jolandaellen) Hello I'm Joël,

I've been around on goodreads for some time,
and now its time to fiend groups and friend.
Time to get better recommendations.
Because I have discovered that my taste in Fantasy novels is (far) different then those of my real life friends.

message 83: by John (new)

John Beachem | 9 comments Hi Joel, welcome to the group. Shouldn't have any problem finding someone here with similar tastes.

message 84: by Ben (last edited Apr 09, 2011 04:50PM) (new)

Ben (bstanley52) | 39 comments Hey, I am new to the group and eventually going to read the Malazan series. However I am wondering:

1) how much I will miss by not reading the books along with people

AND

2) if everyone will be annoyed if I post to the Gardens of the Moon discussions when they are on later books?

Thanks.

message 85: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments Hi Ben and welcome. As to your questions, I don't know about #1, but I have read books after the discussion was over and have still enjoyed the discussion. Others have come back to comment on my posts.

And #2, not at all. Discussions remain open and everyone can feel free to continue to comment.

Not really! Usually it's pretty obvious and reeks of desperation. If you really really want to, then own it and claim upfront you wrote it...

message 88: by Maggie, The Malazan Queen of Chaos (new)

Maggie K | 1209 comments Mod
well, like I said, you can if you are tasteful about it...it's hard to promote books these days!

I think that is half the reason I never tried to put anything out there...I would be too frustrated!

message 89: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) Hi - I'm Tracey; lots of familiar faces here! I've been lurking for a while, and didn't realize I hadn't posted yet.... I hope to join in on the Malazan discussions.

Joel wrote: "...but is it acceptable to rate your own book?"

IMO - absolutely not. It's ... tacky, and as Maggie says looks pretty desperate. For me, in fact, it's a point against a book - if a book's first rating is five stars from the author, I scratch that book from any possible TBR, just as I do when an author comes onto a group and makes a single post promoting his book and doesn't join conversations, or when I receive a friend request or invitation from someone looking purely to promote his book.

message 90: by Maggie, The Malazan Queen of Chaos (new)

Maggie K | 1209 comments Mod
the best way to promote your book is to actually join in on the discussions, and only talk about your book when it comes up. We have and do read independent's, but are wary of people pressuring us to do so!

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments Maggie wrote: "the best way to promote your book is to actually join in on the discussions, and only talk about your book when it comes up. We have and do read independent's, but are wary of people pressuring us..."

Amen and such posts get deleted if I spot them!

message 92: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Marvello (drmarvello) Hi, my name is Daniel R. Marvello. I read science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and thriller books mostly. I joined this group to find recommendations on good reading material, particularly in indie publications, and to participate in the discussions.

I'm currently writing my first fantasy novel, which I intend to self-publish next year. Before anyone jumps on my case, I understand the rules about spamming the group and will participate here as just a reader.

I look forward to the discussions!

message 93: by Carole (new)

Carole Hi All, I'm new to Goodreads. I'm a long time lover of fantasy. My favourite authors are Tolkien (obviously), Raymond E Feist, Robin Hobb, Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, David Eddings and Ian Irvine. I'm currently reading Towers of Midnight in The Wheel of Time series. I've already read the Empire books that you are currently reading so I won't spoil it for anyone :)

I look forward to interesting discussions (although I'll probably be more of a lurker for a while)

message 94: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) Since I purchased my kindle, my reading time has increased dramatically. I am now finding I am very interested in reading what others have to say about the books I have read/are reading and hoping that by joining a group I can make some new friends with similar book tastes.
I am trying to catch up to the groups Malazan current read, but only on book 2, and we all know how big they are :)

message 95: by Maggie, The Malazan Queen of Chaos (new)

Maggie K | 1209 comments Mod
Hi Lee- yeah we ALL understand about Malazan-it's very hard to keep up with the reads...feel free to chime in on the old posts anytime!

message 96: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) @ maggie, thanks, I will.

message 97: by Lida (new)

Lida (smurfster) | 1 comments Hi all. This group caught my eye as I am a big Raymond E Feist fan and his Riftwar series are currently under discussion... So I had to join and have my say. LOL
Love reading, basically any genre but prefer reading fantasy. If I want to think realistic, then I can put my book down and go with reality. LOL

message 98: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments Welcome, Lida and all.

message 99: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Hello everyone. I joined this group a few weeks ago and decided it was time to introduce myself. Like Lida, I am a big Raymond Feist fan and just finished reading A Darkness at Sethanon. I plan on starting Daughter of the Empire next. Hopefully I can catch up with the monthly readings of this series.
