Dear (fill-in-the-blank): an expert advice thread.
RandomAnthony wrote: "I need some goddamn advice. My kids won't stop listening to matchbox 20. What should I do?"You know they're just rebelling against all the ambient stuff you play, RA. I'm afraid you're going to have to counter with some klezmer music.
And yes, Australia rocks! I would LOVE to go there and snorkle the reefs, Jonathan. :)
The door is always open Jackie if you would like to visit!
Gail wrote: "The door is always open Jackie if you would like to visit!"REALLY?!? Awesome, Gail!
How common are koalas? Do you see them in the neighborhood like you see squirrels here?
:::runs to open up a vacation savings money market account:::
Not in Sydney. Kangaroo’s and possums yes. There are areas of Australia that koalas can be seen quite commonly. We holiday at Port Macquarie. They can be seen in the wild there.
Gail wrote: "Not in Sydney. Kangaroo’s and possums yes. There are areas of Australia that koalas can be seen quite commonly. We holiday at Port Macquarie. They can be seen in the wild there."Wow. Now I'm imagining kangaroos bounding through backyards and messing up people's gardens like deer do here...
Not quite that prolific. I live in the north western suburbs area of Sydney. Where my children play sport you can catch them on the fields at dawn & dusk. In the Dural/Kenthurst area they probably cause problems in peoples gardens, I don't live quite that far out.
BunWat wrote: "When I lived in the Catskills here used to be a klezmer show on the radio at 3 pm on Tuesdays, I tried not to get stuck without a book on tape in my car at 3 pm on Tuesdays."Exactly, Bun. If any music would drive someone to want to listen to ambient, it would have to be frenetic klezmer music.
Strange. Following this thread, I'm now imagining kangaroos and wallabies bounding through the wild to a soundtrack of klezmer music...
Kangaroos will listen to anything!
RandomAnthony wrote: "hums stars of the lid into Jackie's headphones"Hey, none of that, RA. I'm listening to "Let the Good Times Roll" by the Cars, and I'm just fine with that, thank you. :)
You like your kind of mellow, and I like mine.
1) I like the cars, 2) SOTL aren't "mellow " to me, really...they're pretty intense, an acquired taste:)
So what sort of mellow does RA listen too?
Hmmm little league, not exactly what I would call mellow.
I found this on youtube is this what you were humming in Jackies ear? It is beautiful , not easy to hum though.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! Oh, those kangaroos, with their unformed musical tastes...
RA, you're right. SOTL are pretty intense. And that sounds lovely, I love the sound of a baseball game.
Those Kangaroos have been influenced by listening to too much country music. After that anything sounds good!!!!
Ain't nothin' wrong with Hank Williams or Charlie Pride, or Willie Nelson, or Johnny Cash--me and the kangaroos agree on this.
Chad Morgan's not one of my favorites, but after a stiff drink or three--Jim Beam, dirty glass--he's tolerable.
LOL, Remind me not to have too many drinks with you!

It is intense, I love it! It grips you!

Oh, I'm glad you like it, Gail! This is one of my favorites...

Hmmmm. The sound is too low I can bearly hear it. The speakers in my office are a bit dodgy, I will have to wait until I get home to listen to it. Thanks RA.
This is a good example of why I like country music (caution: lyrics not suitable for people with delicate sensibilities and/or no sense of humor):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85gO8X...
No sorry Jonathan, you are on your own. My parents tortured me for years with this sort of country music. I was so glad to escape from it when I left home.
I am happy to admit to having no sense of humour. (My husband tells me all the time so you will not be the first)

My step
Well, I didn't grow up listening to country music, which may explain why I like it now. I too prefer the older artists: there's a real humanity and a gentle sense of humor to someone like Johnny Cash that seems lacking in a lot (although not all) of the contemporary country acts, which tend to seem more like pop music to me.
Then again, I like some of Reba McEntire's stuff a lot, although that may be because her big hits--"Fancy," etc.--are tunes written way back when that she has reinterpreted in her own style. Who knows...There's a lot of good music out there.
My wife listens to a lot of contemporary country, so I hear it in the background at the house. Her absolute favorite is Keith Urban, really more of a rocker than a country singer. I buy Dixie Chicks CDs, and made sure to support them when stations around the country refused to play them.

Oh, I'm glad..."
I needed some serious quiet time to really listen to it properly. I finally managed that over the weekend. Thank you so much for sharing it with me RA. SOTL has added a totaly new dimention to my play list. I think my preference is for the more melodic (refer msg 85) SOTL, the one I first listened too.

I'm so glad you like them, Gail! Check out both And the Refinement of the Decline and The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid. Both are awesome.
i generally try to be a nice person and try to help people when i can. so when my mother asked if i would participate in medical research i said i would. i don't have to take any freaky medications, the researchers just want to monitor my physical health every three or so years. i went to the hospital friday for the first test. heart, lungs, weight etc. i misserably failed the lungs test. i had to breathe into a device, but i wasn't doing it right and now i have to practice my technique at home. no fun.but that's not what i'm here for. i can squeeze my lungs when i really have to and will try to be nice and cooperative the next time. i'm here because they're after my urine too. 24 hours of urine even. my question to our urine expert(s): what should/shouldn't i eat or drink or do that day and the days before to make my day of urine collecting a little more fun? and also: how do i pee in the cup and not on my hand?
Okay, I have a question. I've been recycling those plastic, lidded containers they have at the supermarket deli counters -- you know, the ones you can put olives, macaroni salad, etc., in? But I seem to have read recently that after they've been in the dishwasher, the molecules of benzene or whatever can migrate into any food you put in them. Anyone know if that's true?
It is. I'm pretty sure it is, at least... from what I remember, you can wash them once and recycle once, but should probably throw them away after that one use. The people who save them never do, though. I have several friends who keep them.
I have a question about bookswapping on goodreads.I'm trying to print the shipping label for a batch swap, but I get this message that says something like "can't generate label. Try again later." Why am I getting that message?
Barb wrote: "Sorry Britt, I have no idea. I'm a greedy bitch and don't share my books ...."Hahaha. I'm only sharing my books because they're trying to take over my room and the room next door. I'm a book junkie.
The problem resolved itself. I just kept trying and was finally able to print. I don't like that I had to guestimate the weight though. I was 4.5 oz off apparently.
Britt wrote: "I don't like that I had to guestimate the weight though."Generally, you can get an accurate shipping weight by looking at each book's detail page on Amazon.com. It's usually listed near the ISBN number, publisher info, sales rank, etc.--unless you're dealing with old or obscure books, in which case I guess, like you said, you're pretty much on your own.
Jonathan wrote: Generally, you can get an accurate shipping weight by looking at each book's detail page on Amazon.com. It's usually listed ..."
That's what I did! And my total came to 100 ounces, I added 12, and I was still under by 4.5.
When I'm shipping single books, the shipping is already calculated, but this was a batch of 7, so I guess my rule of thumb is amazon weight plus a pound.
Okay, another plastic question. I've heard it's now useless to take your plastic bags to the recycling box at the supermarket because they secretly just throw them away. Apparently it costs more to recycle plastic bags than to make new ones. Anyone know about this?
Britt wrote: "I guess my rule of thumb is amazon weight plus a pound..."Good to know. I haven't ever run into that particular problem personally, but I must confess that I have made many, many mistakes trying to tabulate weights in pounds and ounces. For instance, a 1.5 pound book weighs 1 pound and 8 ounces (or 24 oz., total), not 1 pound and 5 ounces (or 21 oz., total)--which is easy enough to remember when dealing with one book, but more confusing when adding up a column of numbers. Anyway, not to say that you made any kind of error, just that I've done it.
I've heard that rumor about the plastic bags, but if they don't recycle them, then surely they can't tell people that they are. Also, why would they want people to bring all their bags just to add to throw in their dumpster?
Calling all women who wear make up!So I've never worn make up before because I have no self-esteem whatsoever, but I'm thinking this upcoming semester I need to pay attention to my appearance because maybe I'll make me feel better about myself. I really took advantage of "bumming" last year. When I went to class, it was t-shirts, sweats, and baller shorts.
Sooooo any make up tips for a beginner?
PS. When I told my mom that I wanted to start wearing make up, she looked at me like I had got my period for the first time.
