Julie Do we want to put books on the group shelf? If so, anyone have suggestions, either specific books or ways of determining what should be on there?

It could be used a couple of different ways. It could be a list of books that are very popular within the group, or books that one member would suggest to the group at large, or books that we all decide to read as a group (eek), or books with pretty pretty covers (I'm a book-cover-judger and there's no denyin').

Twickster | 6 comments I started a thread once about the nonfiction books that most Dopers had (should, wanted to) read -- IIRC, "Guns, Germs, and Steel" was my starting point.

Pam | 87 comments One author many Dopers seem to have in common is Jane Austen. And I think I've seen To Kill A Mockingbird on just about everybody's shelves.

Grey | 1 comments Do we need to have only one shelf or could we have a few broken down by broad subject? Something along the lines of a SDMB_History, SDMB_Romance etc.

Julie I think the only options for the group shelf are "read," "to-read," and "currently-reading."

I can't seem to find a way to create custom shelves, but I'll look further.

Julie It appears that there is no support currently for custom group shelves, but that it might be in the works for the future. Whee!

Julie New idea: We could use the group shelves as a place to put books we have that we would be willing to give to/swap with someone else?

I think this is a good idea. I was just reading in another thread about someone just buying "Prodigal Summer" to read and I thought, I could have sent them that.

Maria | 2 comments I signed up at paperbackswap just before I signed up here, and I have a bookshelf labeled 'paperbackswap' here, for stuff I have listed there. It's not a great solution, but it is kind of a way of offering a book.
