Flannery (flannabanana) I've been a Kindle addict for over a year and a half and I am on my THIRD one! The first one my friend's sister stepped on and part of the screen cracked--Amazon CS said that my warranty didn't cover accidental damage so I deactivated it and sold it on Craigslist. The guy who bought it talked with CS again and they replaced it! He tried to give it back to me in exchange for gas money because he felt badly--just when you thought goodness was going out of style:-) (I had already bought a new one)

Flash forward, I think I left #2 on an airplane in Vegas. I reported it to the airline and the airport but no dice. Deregistered.

Now I am on #3 and I am crossing my fingers that I won't do something idiotic again. However, the point of this entire thread is this:

Is it bad that I don't really mind losing 2 Kindles because I secretly hope I helped two people read more?

**I'm not sure if everyone knows this: All the downloaded data stays on a Kindle after you deregister it until someone reregisters it to a different account**

I've had two Kindle's break and Amazon replaced both of them. The trick with getting them replaced when you break it, is to not tell them it's your fault. Amazon made the outsides of these things really tough (the insides, not so much) so if you step on it or drop it, there won't be any visible damage and Amazon will replace it. =D

I paid the refurb price, but then was refunded when I returned the broken unit (amazon paid the shipping).

Did you check with your homeowners/renters insurance carrier to see if they'd cover the lost one?

I tried that;-) I said I had no idea how it happened. But you could totally tell it was stepped on--the top right portion was stuck on the Oscar Wilde screensaver and you couldn't see the top line or two on that side. I still change that screensaver every time it comes up!

And I don't have renter's insurance...I know that I should.

Jeff | 33 comments Ok, what was your Kindle doing on the floor? ;)

I just got mine last week and I'm super careful with it (to the point that I even grip it lightly while reading). I hope nothing happens to mine because I don't know if I could get another one right away and I didn't get the extended warranty.

Amber (amberbounds) | 23 comments I dropped mine on the asphalt this week. It's the 3rd generation and only a week old. You don't have to lie. Mine just had one small dot on the screen. Nothing major, a little bigger than a pen point. I called customer service yesterday and told them what I did. No questions asked, my new one arrived on my doorstep a little after noon today. So easy. Just have to print out the label they sent me and ship the other one back. I will however wait until the cover I ordered for my new one gets here before I send the other back. (Cause I'm not even opening the box till the cover arrives!) ;)

Regina (reginar) I stepped on my K2 and Kindle replaced it, I even told them that I stepped on it. Replaced it at no cost to me and sent it overnight with a new power cord. :)

I've never dropped mine more than a couple of feet. My K1 fell off my couch onto the carpeted floor. But I have always had a cover for mine. I wouldn't want to put it in my purse without one. I don't want the stuff in my purse or bag damaging my Kindle screen.

Andrew Kaufman (andrewekaufman) Flannery, is it possible you and I were separated at birth? LOL

I've been through three myself. Almost four after spilling water on mine last night. Luckily it survived.

Had a "near lost" situation while vacationing in Hawaii. Left my backpack (with Kindle inside) at a restaurant and didn't realize it until I got back to my hotel, several miles away. Nothing worse than that sick feeling when you realize what you've done! Luckily, after driving back to the restaurant, I found some honest customer has turned it in and it was waiting for me. I almost had to endure my whole vacation reading paper books! Yikes!

Karen (karenscraps) My kindle2 fell off an elliptical at the gym and landed face down causing a broken screen. We contacted customer service and was told that it was not covered but I could purchase a refurbished model with extended warranty. I may be gettin a kindle 3 in November and I have been thinking about listing it on ebay or craigslist.

Regina (reginar) Karen how long had you owned it when they said it was not covered?

message 13: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenscraps) I can't remember probably 8 months. It's been forever since I've been without it.

Karen (karenscraps) I contacted Amazon again over the weekend about my broken K2 and since it was out of warranty the only thing they could do was offer me a refurbished K2 with a 3 month warranty for 89.00 or the new wifi one for 139.00. Now why couldn't they offer me something like the refurbished one last year when I called them instead of telling me there was nothing they could do to help me?
