short stories can be a good introduction to an author, but i find i am often annoyed by the lenght of so-called short stories that are not short at all. do you feel like you're ready for one of the big fish now?

I agree about the so-called short stories. Novellas have to really work to win me over, since they are a lot of commitment for something that is still less than a book.
