Laurel (goodreadscomboddy_l) | 28 comments Just finished Murder in the Place of Anubis Murder in the Place of Anubis (Lord Meren, #1) by Lynda S. Robinson , a first book in a mystery/detective series, set in Ancient Egypt, during the time of Tutankhamen. The main character is Meron, who serves as The Eyes and Ears of Pharoah. I read this a long time ago, and didn't remember much about the storyline. I enjoyed reading this book, especially because of the historical setting, and cultural details provided. Also reminded me of how much my students used to love learning about Ancient Egypt! This was a dangerous time to be in power, and the book provides political intrigue as well as a good mystery to solve. I will certainly search out the next instalment of Lord Meron's story.

Franky | 1042 comments Just read Nightmare Alley. It is sort of a noir(ish) mystery and very hard to find. I thought it fantastic, but it probably won't be to everyone's taste. There's also a great film from 1947 based on this novel.

Paul The Collector by John Fowles

'The Collector' by John Fowles (1963)

Why am i writing a review of a book i read nearly 40 years ago? For several reasons.

*It is the first psychological thriller i remember reading & it began a fascination with the genera that looks likely to be a life long love affair

&;

*Despite being a twisted & dark tale, it is a beautifully written & crafted narrative.

This story is a rather claustrophobic story, taking place as it does in a single location with really only two characters.

Frederik Clegg is a lonely, socially awkward individual who is attracted to a young female student by the name of Miranda Grey. He wants to get to know her better (OK so far… right?). Freddy decides to purchase a house in an out-of-the-way location, construct a room in his basement filled with all the comforts Miranda might require (uh huh), then he kidnaps her, installs her in the room he has prepared in the hope she will fall in love with him… given time (oh… that can't be good). And it's not good. Far from it. Did i mention Freddy collects butterflies? The mounted variety… (oh boy). At times when reading this book, i felt the hairs standing up on my neck. How often has this happened to me when reading a book? Just this once.

The Collector is the book against which i have measured all subsequent psychological thrillers & it's a tough act to follow.

It's hard to believe, on finishing this book, that it's barely a novella, numbering as it does only around 200 pages in the paperback edition. This is such a big story for so few words. I give this novel 5 stars out of 5, & if it were out of 10, i would would have no hesitation increasing my allocation of stars to 10. Please do read this if you enjoy psychological thrillers. You'll probably regret it. Good reading.

LOVED that book! I saw the movie too, but it doesn't do the book justice.

Franky | 1042 comments Exactly my thoughts too, Nancy. The film, while good, is only a shell of the book, with Stan's motives and everything.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments The Expats should be the literary version of a platypus -- an espionage yarn mixed with domestic soap opera -- but in the main it works pretty well if you approach it with the proper expectations. It ain't a spy thriller, nor is it pure kitchen-sink drama, but if you can deal with a blend of the two, you might enjoy seeing how arts & crafts and tradecraft go together. Four stars.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments The Lie: A Novel features an intriguing scenario -- an outspoken human-rights lawyer is co-opted by the Israeli police to decide who gets tortured -- well-crafted settings and descriptions, brisk pacing...and an unfortunate lack of character development or tension. Decent, not great. Three stars.

Peter Prasad (goodreadscompeter_prasad) | 16 comments GURL-POSSE KIDNAP. A drug deal unravels into murder, kidnap and redemption as PI Jake Knight helps his client see the light. Here's what the reviewers are saying:
Gurl-Posse Kidnap (Sonoma Knight PI, #2) by Peter Prasad

"Loved the read. Characters leap off the pages. Escapist modern beach read, complete with a scoop of the paranormal. Five-star thriller, with blood-chilling villains that make Iago seem tame. This is a very exciting tale, written in superb style with real panache. Reminds me how surprising novels can be. Prasad is a writer like no other. His inventive turns of phrase give this book its wit, irony, warmth and humor."

Holes is one of my all-time favorite books. When it was published in 1998, it had been at least 35 years since I qualified as a "Young Adult," but it made my list of favorite books. I enjoyed the movie, too. Another book that I read when I was way too old for it, but loved anyway, is Gary Paulsen's Hatchet.
