Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Crashed is a wised-up, wiseacre caper story that starts rather than ends with a heist. The Runyonesque characters, rimshot dialog and general eccentricity mean that you'll have to approach this novel with precisely the right mindset and expectations or you'll meet with great disappointment or, perhaps, cognitive dissonance. You might have some fun, though. Four stars.

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) | 4770 comments Victim Mentality by Angelo Marcos Victim Mentality by Angelo Marcos

Angelo Marcos is one of a very select group of authors of whom I cannot get enough.

Victim Mentality is a very clever and immensely enjoyable psychological thriller like nothing else I have read.

Nick is OCD and has reached a critical point in his life -no one likes him, not his girlfriend, his support group, his agent.

When he lands a role as a career criminal he wants to meet one so that he can get into the role. Enter Gideon Mathias, master criminal and manipulator extraordinaire.

Highly recommended.

Thank you to author Angelo Marcos for providing a digital copy of Victim Mentality for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Absolute Zero Cool is a tour de force literary experiment loosely wrapped in a genre cloak. If you like your narratives deconstructed and self-referential, you'll find much to enjoy here. If you're looking for a straight-ahead Celtic crime novel with a proper plot and characters, look elsewhere (perhaps to one of Burke's other novels). Four postmodern stars.

JoanneM | 13 comments The Girl In Kellers Way, by Megan Goldin: This psychological thriller is a gripping story about the frustrated and anxious wife (Julie) of a psychology professor (Matt) who feels that her marriage is shadowed by her husband's dead wife who was murdered years ago. As the story evolves we learn that Julie has all sorts of secrets as does Matt. And then it gets really interesting when the dead wife's body is found and it turns out the person the police thought murdered her didn't. So they start investigating and as they do, Jule and Matt's marriage unravels as secrets rise to the surface. The Girl In Kellers Way is the best thriller that I've read for a long time. Highly recommend

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments The Cold War Swap is a spy noir thriller that fifty years on is still an entertaining read even though nothing in it will surprise you. The Chandleresque prose sets it apart from the dozens of other books that dredge the same waters. If that sounds like your shot of whiskey, then push your way through the night and fog and cigarette smoke and alcohol fumes, and enjoy watching the shady people do bad things to each other as they play the great game. 3.7 bottles of rye, rounded up to four.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments There's nothing wrong with Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits that couldn't be fixed with ~100 fewer pages, better character development and more thorough editing. I wanted to like this book much more than I actually did. In the end, the author let the crazy get the best of him, which is the one thing you can't do when you play in this sandbox. Two stars.

Rowena Hoseason | 90 comments One for fans of fast-paced Nordic noir - the new standalone thriller from Arne Dahl.
Watching You is *not* part of the Intercrime series, nor is it your typical slow-burn Scandi crime.
It's stuffed with sudden switchback plot reversals, and kicks off with a stand-out, set piece action sequence which simultaneously curls your toes and sets your stomach churning. The whole book is saturated with unsettling scents; blood, bodily fluids, decay, and each scene is soaked with the incessant precipitation.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Beware the hyperventilating title and the heavy breathing on the back cover: Broker, Trader, Lawyer, Spy: The Secret World of Corporate Espionage isn't nearly as explosive today as it was seven years ago. Perhaps we're too jaded to be surprised anymore. Maybe it's the inch-deep reportage, the repetitive stories, the narrow focus or the multiple missed opportunities. If you don't know anything about the subject, you'll probably get a kick out of this book, or be scandalized by it. If you do, you might get a yearning for a more filling meal. Two and a half-ish stars rounded up to three.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Zoo Station is a Furstian exercise in interwar intrigue that avoids some of Alan Furst's recent writing tics. The protagonist is refreshingly normal, and the plot, though hardly groundbreaking, is diverting and ultimately satisfying. Check it out if you need a new fix of looming (but not realized) disaster, moral rot, and scenes from a now-vanished world. Four strong stars.
