Lol I agree with both of you! Yes some of these YA books are written… I would say under level but I don’t think this is a bad thing either. One point I would like to make is there are many teens out there that should be at a certain reading level but of course this is not the case. Imagine a non reader at a 6th grade reading level and you hand that person Lord of The Rings! Not only will that person not grasp the literature but will be bored out of their mind lol. I agree with Star with the fact that Twilight, HON, VA, and etc got many non readers intrigued. So now we have more kids out there reading and eventually they will progress to better literature. I do agree with Rebekah that it looks like the stranded teen reading materiel has decrease but no I just think that a huge amount of young readers out there reading these novels b/c of the advertising. You have to admit even some of us have read it b/c of of the publicity lol. I think we should start to worry is when ppl think books like Twilight should get an award. ^_^ Now I do have to defend some YA books! Some of these books are written beautifully and should not be judged by Meyers writing. That's like comparing Stephen Kings to Christina Harries *giggles* I mean look at JK Rowling! Awesome YA writer!!! Everyone likes different things and have different opinions :D
I don't have anything against the type of vampires portrayed in twilight, I like them and I greatly enjoy Anne Rice's take as well. What bothers me, is that every time I introduce myself as a paranormal (mainly vampire) romance author or when people see the cover of my book, the first question people ask is, "Its like Twilight?"
NO!
That is what upsets me with Twilight. Not that I am an author and everything I market to those that are not avid reads of the genre, but every book I even read (J.R. Ward for example) people ask me if its like Twilight. We all know, J.R. Ward's work can not be compared to Twilight. In my opinion J.R. Ward's books are infinitely better.

LOL yeah a lot of times when I recommend a vampire book to somebody on Goodreads the first thing they ask is "Is it like Twilight?" so I understand what you mean.
I am currently writing. I have a few novels going at the moment and am trying desperately to steer clear of the vampire genre, though it is killing me lol.
Oh, I'm a huge fan of J.R. Ward and I have to agree with you wholehearted. INFINITELY better!

Hi - interesting conversation. I think whether Twilight has ruined vampires depends on what it is each person looks for in their vampire stories. Personally, I thought the first book was ok. Not my idea of a vampire story but an engaging premise full of teenage angst and supernatural characters. I have to say I was very, very disappointed by the time I got to the end of the saga. For me, there is one thing a vampire MUST do, and that's bite his mate. Also, the Bella character getting everything she wants while thousands of years of combined vampire wisdom bows to the will of a miserable teenager really bugged me. The film was a separate thing altogether and worked for different reasons - the discovery of Rob Pattinson was one, the look and feel of Hardwicke's film was another and the amazing soundtrack was also key to the film's success. There are moments of dialogue that make my toes curl and some cringe making scenes but overall, it was entertaining enough. Hollywood has done its usual overkill though so many people are sick of it by now. As to the vampire genre in general, I don't think there are any hard and fast rules but for me, I prefer the vamps to a sexy anti-hero type or a dark seducer.
