same me too back when i was at uni we got so tired we just gave up LOL

There's a 2nd hand bookshop in Pasar Seni (yes, I call it Pasar Seni not Central Market or CM. I'm old school). Ground floor, near the....erm, actually haven't been there in years so I don't remember but it's on the ground floor. Check it out!

Oh i know that store .....been there during my school days ....i won't say its the best but the man there is quite friendly LOL

Yeah the P.seni store is stacked with romance books...which i'm NOT into but sometimes you get to find the really old old edition of some books
Been there too (behind TMC)...begining of last year ...ok lah kot

book xcess pun not bad. Kalau tak pun kata pasar pagi shah alam hari ahad ada 2-3 car boot sales yang jual buku terpakai

patutlah minggu lepas pegi OU cari payless tak jumpa..merata pusing-pusing dalam tu.

Betul last time back when i was at the school i too would drag my mom go that place to sewa books LOL

WOW really??? I never heard of that place .....WOW good info though ....I'll try NOT to look too interested in the books .....Thanks a bunch !!! :)
Can laaa. Do this:
"So, ermmm...*yawn* how much for all these books? How much? *sigh* I don't suppose you could give a discount? Say, 20%? *looks at fingernails*"
Lots of yawning and sighing.

tried that ones when i was buying a blouse .....didn't work the makcik stare back blank at me for along time.....i got scared and bought it anyway....no discount

Banyak ensiklopedia, National Geographic, novel langka (pernah dapat novel Pertentangan karya SN S Othman Kelantan terbitan sulung), novel Inggeris pun melambak. Pernah jumpa Da Vinci Code, The Chronicle of Narnia, LOTR dan HP. Seeloknya datang awal sebelum kena serbu dengan orang lain
3) Book Chest di The Mall.
Dua-dua ni well known and truly heaven.
Walau bagaimanapun, pilihan saya tetapi no 2.

HEHEHEH

Rental bookstores are aplenty. There are at least 3 in SS2 (2 of them specialising in Chinese books). I usually frequent the one the same row with the Police Station; a few doors (same block) with CIMB bank. It's on the 2nd floor. The staircase to it is two doors away from the meat floss shop. Rental price depends on whether book is hardcover, trade paperback or paperback. Not cheap, but they have new releases.
The one in Central Market has a good range and variety; prices go down with the age of the books. But you need to really dig as they are not well organised. It's in the row facing the bus stand of Lebuh/Medan Pasar (I think that's the road).
There is one in PJ New Town, a tiny shop facing the Menara MBPJ, same row with a Sports Toto, I think. Decent enough selection.
If you want to buy outright, you can go to the one in Amcorp Mall. Top floor, a few doors from the Kenny Rogers. Not well organised, kinda dusty.
Or you can go to BookXcess, same floor. Paperbacks can be had from RM 5 to RM 17.90. These are NEW BOOKS, mind you, at 2nd hand price. They have the odd imprints of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman that I don't see at either MPH or Borders.
Hope this helps!

I think those are the US editions which have different covers. Books sold in MPH et al. are usually the UK edition (even books that were first published in the US, we stil get the UK edition).

Still, Kedai Uncle so far offered me the lowest price of books that i can find. And yes, i agreed with Deviki- the Uncles there are helpful. Just name the books, and he'll know where to find it for u!
Apart from that, i've been smitten by Book Xcess over and over again. what more can i ask when i can get brand new book with RM9.90 per book? Insanely true!
Anyhow, i never heard about the H.S Lee bookshop before. I'll go to the H.S Lee bookshop someday soon..
Till then, happy hunting and have a good buy :-)

heheh..ni pun sebab nak beli jeruk. selama ni dok beli jeruk je tak tau atas tu ada kedai buku scondhand..

Dulu selalu pergi Pasar Seni, but then, as BookXcess lagi banyak buku yang dilihat dan berkenan, I ended buying the books at BookXcess. Yup, kedai buku di Pasar Seni tu, banyak romance novels...

Banyak buku romance dan buku Agatha Christie. Dulu lah, tahun lewat 90an dulu. Skrg ni tak tau sebab dah tak pergi.
Seksyen romance penuh dgn wanita Melayu. Tempat Agatha Christie & fiksyen barat, saya dgn kawan je yg duk menyibuk. Mula-mula kecewa le jugak tgk perangai mereka asyik baca romance novels je tapi pikir balik, sekurang-kurangnya mereka membaca, ye tak?

Last pergi, they've thrown out really old novels and it's much better organised. But, women still splurge at romance section sebabnya...buku yang ganti baru tu pun, masih buku romance :D
Yang kelakarnya, saya dengan adik splurge pergi tengok buku James Patterson, Jodi Picoult at other novels section tu. Tak ada orang berebut pun :P

Heh. That just shows to you the romance market is HUGE. Because more women read than men.
Truth is, romance readers can be pretty eclectic in their taste. I read romance and urban fantasy and non-fiction history etc. Another friend reads thrillers.
But also, do consider that many, if not most romance writers, blend a great deal of other elements in their writing; so it could be a thriller/urban fantasy/whatever with romantic elements.
We want our gore and thrills, but we also want the girl to get the guy at the end.
*grin*

Tp usually aku baca adult romance.. hehe.. tak main la buku kepunyaan makcik2 ni.
Ada satu kedai buku 2cnd hand kat amcorp mall, depan escalator floor BX. Masuk je, mcm kena serang asthma je rasa.... claustrophobic giler.
Tapi time tu ingat sbb diorg jual buku Dan Brown's Lost Symbol rm24 waktu buku tu baru kuar. haha
kat ss7 kelana jaya ada gak jual buku second hand, tepi guardian and kedai dvd pirate... tp kedai ni kecik sgt, bosan je tgk buku dia.

I agree that BookXcess punya romance section is pretty insipid unless you lucked out. They mostly stock authors that don't excite me as well. As for the paranormal romance, the genre is still growing. I'd say 3 out of 4, you're gonna be disappointed with poor plots, annoying Mary Sue characters and lousy follow through. I got lucky when I found authors like Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Carrie Vaughn and Jennifer Estep (Spider series).
As much as I haunt 2nd book stores, I end up renting more than buying because:
a) to get more bang out of my buck
b) if I don't like the book I can always toss it back and get my deposit.
*grin*
Oh, and the description of the 2nd hand book shop at Amcorp? Spot on.

I haven't been back in a long while, hope it's still there.
Never really tried bookxcess or book chest. These days I do all my "reading" during the commute through audiobooks.

Terima kasih

I've been a loyal customer of BookXcess for 4 or 5 years back when they had the tiny shop LOL. Yeah that bookshop next to Kenny Rogers is shutdown for sometime now. I've always wanted to try there though.
The thing about rentals is that they are mostly filled with Boon and Mills love stories or cheesy (sorry to say) chic flicks. Which I don't like.
Any of you know any secondhand book store that sells cheap books.....i mean the last one we (my sis n i) went to was really bad and EXPENSIVE !!! and the keeper was quite strict about NOT bargaining….quite rude too ……
