She is one of the most popular HR authors of our generation... She is most notably known for her 'Malory' Series... Loved all of them.

Heather (Let's-Go-Pens-We're-Gonna-Take-This-One) She's my favourite, although the books written in the last five or so years have all been a let down.

Usually her books are so well written that I cry at the sad parts, over and over again. I get so caught up in them that they're read in a night. I buy them as soon as they go on sale. They're awesome!

I own all her books, in duplicate, and recommend her to everyone!

Shannon (shannyd) | 8 comments I love Johanna, too. As a matter of fact, I think my rotten little sister (the aforementioned Heather) used to make fun of me for reading her books ALL THE TIME. Actually, I used to read them in high school during class. Tread carefully, however, because they give you unrealistic ideas about men.

Heather (Let's-Go-Pens-We're-Gonna-Take-This-One) I did make fun of you...but then read Paradise Wild (which is one of her worst) and was hooked.

I really liked that one.. It's part of a series as well... The Devil Who Tamed Her by Johanna Lindsey A Rogue of My Own by Johanna Lindsey

I really liked 'Devil', but wasn't a fan of 'Rogue'

A word of caution about 'Devil', but the reason why I liked it, the heroine is the biotch fron 'The Heir'.. So you hate her from then, and see there is more to her in 'Devil'

I'll have to check my read pile. I think I may have only read one other of hers.

So what order should I read The Heir in ?

EvaS (evikes) | 70 comments I finished the FC last night and I'm desperately trying to pace myself... figured I'd get a short book in before reading ABOSAA - I think I'd better stay away from Highlander/Scottish storylines altogether for now... they would be a disappointment in comparison, I just know it.
I think I'm going to read one of JL's stand alone novels. It's been a loooooooong time since I read one of hers. Leaning towards 'Prisoner of My Desire' since it's sitting on my bookshelf already...

message 17: by EvaS (last edited Mar 26, 2010 08:29AM) (new)

EvaS (evikes) | 70 comments I posted this in the Outlander group as well, so please ignore me if you've read that one... just wanted to weigh in on my latest JL read....

I just finished ... Prisoner of My Desire by Johanna Lindsey - I’ve always liked Johanna Lindsey’s books (the ones she wrote in the 90’s especially) and wanted a light read before starting ABOSAA (Outlander). I tried really hard not to make comparisons to the Outlander series, but I must say I failed. I truly liked the story line in “Prisoner of my Desire” and have read it in the past… The hero & heroine reminded me of Claire & Jamie and I kept thinking how Diana could have taken that story to a whole new level. The hero’s whole family is murdered when he is 16 while he is away training to be a knight – that whole story took up one single page! I remember in Outlander when J&C leave the inn (after she gets her spankin’) and he tells her about his father and the things he experienced while he was young. That endeared me to him and made me love him and I missed that in this book…. The reason I think we love Jamie & Claire is that we actually feel like we know them through Diana’s stories and descriptions. I miss the depth of Diana’s writing and I suppose I am being unfair since I DO like Johanna quite a lot and I realize her books are not meant to be deeply thought provoking - I did enjoy the book, but it really could have been...... well, more. I guess I got the nice light read I was looking for, but I think Diana has changed me....
Just my thoughts.
And that is the end of my rant... thank you.

Anyways, I have just finished That Perfect Someone by Johanna Lindsey

It was...... Sweet.

I fear our JL has lost her edge.. she's sorta taken the 'bad' outa 'bad boy' lately... Still a fantastic writer... Just missin that little somethin somethin...

message 20: by Heather (Let's-Go-Pens-We're-Gonna-Take-This-One) (last edited Jun 16, 2010 04:24PM) (new)

Heather (Let's-Go-Pens-We're-Gonna-Take-This-One) I hear ya Shell.
I'm one of her biggest fans, but That Perfect Someone was a little too blah.
Like I've said before, she's taken the f***er factor out of her books. The guys are all too nice now.
What happened to the likes of Warrick, Chandos, James and Garrick? I want my bad boys back.
Anyone also feel that the books she's been writing in the last 5 or so years have all fallen really short of the JL standard? I think she's run out of ideas.
Don't get me wrong, I still love her and will continue to re-read her classics...I'll also still buy everything she has to write, now just with a couple of crossed fingers and the hope that she'll overcome her slump.

Shell and Heather,
Could you recommend a really great JL book one with a great bad boy hero and lots of angst!

I've never read any of novels.

message 22: by Heather (Let's-Go-Pens-We're-Gonna-Take-This-One) (last edited Jun 16, 2010 08:12PM) (new)

Heather (Let's-Go-Pens-We're-Gonna-Take-This-One) Heart So Wild was terrific. Chandos, the main guy is a bad guy and the book chokes me up every time I read it.
I loved Prisoner of My Desire too, Warrick was a prick and the book makes me cry...but I don't think Shell liked it very much.
Savage Thunder is awesome.
Joining is great.
Once a Princess and You Belong to Me are in a series and they're awesome too.

OMG, I almost forgot...Secret Fire! That's one of my top three. Makes me cry every time too!

Okay, top three with bad boys and tons of angst:
Secret Fire Secret Fire by Johanna Lindsey
Heart So Wild A Heart So Wild (Straton Family, #1) by Johanna Lindsey
Prisoner of My Desire Prisoner of My Desire by Johanna Lindsey
And they're all from different periods too so they'll give you some variety.

Honestly though, all her old ones are good except Until Forever, Silver Angel, Captive Bride, Paradise Wild and A Pirate's Love. Anything you read that aren't those will be okay.

Ugh... Prisoner of My desire was awful... (Sorry Heather).. reading that book I could literally hear the cheesy porn music playing in the background..'boom chicka wa wa'... over and over. Cause that's what it reminded me of. You know those older than old porn VHS, you found in your parents closet, and watched with your friends snickering all the way through, cause of the real bad acting, and even worse medievel costumes, while the Harem girls flocked arounf that ugly dude... Uhhmmm.. wait, others have seen that porn right???? Lol. Anyways, that is the image i was left with.

I would suggest you read the Malory's.. Cause everyone love's them. The newest ones are weak.. but the first one's will forever be on my fave list.

Love Only Once (Malory Family, #1) by Johanna Lindsey Tender Rebel (Malory Family) by Johanna Lindsey Gentle Rogue (Malory Family, #3) by Johanna Lindsey most people's fave.. cause James is effin hot Magic of You (Malory Family, Book 4) by Johanna Lindsey Say You Love Me (Malory Family, #5) by Johanna Lindsey The Present (Malory Family, #6) by Johanna Lindsey A Loving Scoundrel (Malory Family, #7) by Johanna Lindsey my personal favorite Captive of My Desires (Malory Family, #8) by Johanna Lindsey No Choice But Seduction (Mallory Family, #9) by Johanna Lindsey That Perfect Someone by Johanna Lindsey

Kelly,

Please don't take Shell's opinion of Prisoner as gospel. I'm sure there are others out there, but she's the only person I've ever met who hasn't liked it. Also for the record, Prisoner isn't about harem girls...that would be Silver Angel. And Warrick isn't ugly, he's a smokin' hot warlord...just sayin'.

And Shell, don't get me started on that lame book you made me read about the guy and girl who lived next door to each other and she would spy on him from out her bedroom window...yawn, snooze, again we'll disagree. But do keep suggesting books to me because out of the million we've read, we've only disagreed on like 3 or 4.

The Malory novels are terrific too, and yes the newest ones are quite weak. The last three though; Captive of My Dreams; No Choice But Seduction; and That Perfect Someone are all pretty much the same plot but with different characters, so don't get too excited about those ones. Shell, here you'll notice that I didn't criticize Jeremy's story at all...I held back just for you.

Kelly, like I said before though, if you stay away from the dreaded five that I mentioned before, you'll do fine.

Also, I thought of another fantastic bad boy angsty one for you...Savage Thunder Savage Thunder (Wyoming, #2) by Johanna Lindsey , it is sooooo good.

Ahem.... Clarification needed... I agree there were no Harem girls, and the dude in the book WAS hot.... So I stand corrected... but my overall opinion stays the same.

And that book you made referance too... You told me you liked it!!!!! What Happens in London (Bevelstoke, #2) by Julia Quinn was damn funny, yo!

I appreciate the lack of Jeremy bashing, as he really was my first love in the world of Romance... (still my fave Malory book)

And yes people, Heather and I do agree on most books, but certainly not all... as you may have noticed. Makes life more interesting when we have our BB Messenger debates.. But she's a great gal, with great taste... most of the time. :)

Kelly, I, 100% back her recommendation of Secret Fire by Johanna Lindsey .. I read it as well, and it is damn good. I may have to re-read it actually..

I am guessing you don't sleep much. :) I have 4 young kids (2, 4, 6, and 10), a job and a husband -- I read during my commute and at night when I should be sleeping. I have read about 74 books this year (not counting the ones I didn't finish). I think I need to be more balanced -- I am too tired to work out! If I want to live long and keep reading, I need to figure in working out.

message 50: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannyd) | 8 comments Johanna Lindsey is the sole reason I became a reader. I can remember reading her books and becoming so absorbed into the story that reality was a rude interruption. I would read them at school (hiding the below my desk) and would shriek excitedly when a new book was released. I loved Secret Fire, Prisoner of My Desire, Brave the Wild Wind and whatever that Chandos one was called. I still love them and read them often. I have never encountered another author whose books affected me like hers did. I don't care that it's not great literature because, quite frankly, I'm not a great thinker. I like my books to keep me entertained. I don't need to learn life lessons from some authors version of reality. I need to escape reality, like trapped miners and teenage gang members and local crime. Give me some smut. Give me a big, strong, smokin' hot man with a bad attitude. Give me a girl who won't take any shit. That is worth reading.
