Vampires, Werewolves, and Time Travel.. what are some of the best?

Heather (Let's-Go-Pens-We're-Gonna-Take-This-One) I've heard vampires are the best, Werewolves leave you coughing up hairballs and time travel....that's only worked out in one scenario and his name starts with J and ends with amie!

Shannon Drake, Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon are the best.

Kelly | 144 comments I LOVE Historical romance, PNR, and YA

For Paranormal Romance
My favorite to date is the Black Dagger Brotherhood

Honorable mention would be the
Night Huntress Series Bones is super HOT! That damn Fang and Lube made it all worth while!!!!!!!

The books that brought my attention to PNR Twilight Series.

I'd take a Vampire over a Werewolf, anyday. And, I would have to agree, I haven;t found a time travel book that would come close to Outlander...

Kelly | 144 comments I recommend for a big cat that was yummy!
Burning Wild (Leopard People, #3) by Christine Feehan

This was a 5 star for me but the cover is just plain wtf!

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 124 comments The BDB got me started on PNR romance, and I can't seem to get enough of this series. Next came Twilight which I absolutely loved. I'm working on Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunters too. Some of the books I've really enjoyed and others not so much. Christine Feehan was unfortunately a huge miss with me. That's about all I've read in this genre so far.

message 10: by Nona (new)

Nona (goodreadscomnona) I love Anne Rices Vampire Chronicles, BDB though I still have 2 or 3 to read and Twilight was ehh, more teenage horomones to deal with.

Recently I got from the library my first Christine Feehan book Dark Prince, so far I like it. I was fustrated at first cause new to her works I didn't know what a Carpathian male was so was somewhat scratching my head wondering what was going on. Now the story is unfolding and really good so look forward to reading the other 12(or however manyt there are) in the series.

I was wondering if I would continue the series after Dark Lover but the rest are better, Wrath and Butches story I could live without but are must reads to know what was going on. I would try it again and if it does not strike your interest again you can just say you tried.

I never planned on reading it until after two years of my friend/co-worker pushing them on me I gave in, now they are keepers, she was right.

I'm not a fan Shell. Let me know what you think. I've read about 3 of the Caprithian series and the 1st one is still my favorite.

message 14: by Nona (new)

Nona (goodreadscomnona) I think Dark Prince is the first in Carpathian Series(?) and when I feel a detachment coming something grabs enough attention to keep me going. Got Dark Desires bk 2 I believe today so we'll see.

message 15: by Alycia (new)

Alycia I love Linda Wisdom's Hex Series, its a light and fun series.
50 Ways to Hex Your Lover (Jazz Tremaine, #1) by Linda Wisdom Hex Appeal (Jazz Tremaine, #2) by Linda Wisdom Wicked by Any Other Name (Jazz Tremaine, # 3) by Linda Wisdom Hex in High Heels (Jazz Tremaine, #4) by Linda Wisdom The Best Hex Ever (Jazz Tremaine, #5) by Linda Wisdom (not yet released)

I also love MaryJanice Davidson's Queen Betsy series. Its also a light fun series, and Betsy is a fun snarky, shoe loving vampire Queen. Book one is Undead and Unwed (Undead, #1) by MaryJanice Davidson . There are 8 or 9 books out, they are short quick reads too.

I also love The Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, but I think that is more Urban Fantasy.

Heather (Let's-Go-Pens-We're-Gonna-Take-This-One) I have some series about a girl with powers who is engaged to a dragon (in guy form). They are pretty funny and a nice, light change from the norm.

The series is by Katie MacAlister. They're the "Aisling Grey, Guardian" books.

Alycia They are good! Especially if you are looking for a lighter paranormal romance to read. Can't wait for the next book to come out in october.

Vicki Lewis Thompson came out with a new series, Babes on Brooms, another light romance series. I have only read book 1 so far, Blonde With a Wand (Babes-on-Brooms, #1) by Vicki Lewis Thompson . Book 2 is Chick with a Charm (Babes-on-Brooms, #2) by Vicki Lewis Thompson . I liked this series almost as much.

Heather (Let's-Go-Pens-We're-Gonna-Take-This-One) Ok, so I also just read Crouching Vampire, Hidden Fang by Katie MacAlister (author of those Dragon Boyfriend....Aisling Grey, Guardian, Novels that I mentioned).

It was silly, but good. I think it may be part of a series as well. Something to read if you don't like 'dark' paranormal romances.

message 23: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Walton Grant (tamgrant) I'm a recent PNR reader - I started with Dark Lover, mostly to see what the fuss was about and then I was toast (see my review, which details my bookstore shame). I've now read Fantasy Lover and am slinking back to the bookstore for those too!

I've read Lover Eternal and just finished Lover Awakened and I'm completely hooked.

Any suggestions for authors to try?

message 24: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Walton Grant (tamgrant) Oh I should have said - I think I'm partial to vampires rather than fairies, leopards, wolves, etc.

Tammy I would try

The Night Huntress Series with Cat and Bones. Bones is super HOT Vamp! 4 book series

Lots of people love Vampire Academy I was not a fan. It is a YA series. It wasn't the YA part that I didn't enjoy it was more the world building was a bit hard for me to wrap my brain around.

If you want to try shifters I love Shiver also YA but the prose is beautiful.

Good Luck
Happy Reading!

Just started Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Anyone else read these?

message 27: by Amber (new)

Amber | 3 comments Oh Shell, I love the Anita series, Hamilton thinks outside the box, so if you like normal human relationships it might not for you. I've just picked up the 3rd book to read for the second time and am still enjoying.

Hi Shell, I tried it but couldn't finish -- it was not my type of book - hard boiled detective type writing, it seemed to me, and I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on, lol. Probably just me, though, I think I was expecting a combination of Sookie and Buffy with a bit of Bladerunner thrown in.

message 30: by Mishelle, 'The Book Bag' (new)

Mishelle LaBrash (mishalabrash) | 1520 comments Mod
I kinda went in it thinking Sookie too, but soon discovered its a much darker read. I don't mind it so far though.

Lover of Romance (loverofromance) | 14 comments For me, it really depends on that author for vampires, wherewolves and time travel!!! I mean I love Sandra Hill for Time Travel, she does such a great job!! For Vampires I think Kerrelyn Sparks, and Lynsay Sands do a fantastic job. For werewolves, well Kerrelyn Sparks, Christine Feehan, Marjorie M Lie to name a few!! I also love reading Shifter Series!! Those are tons of fun!!!

Sandra Hill... Hmmm, will have to check her out. I love a good tine travel story. Problem is, so often they can be the epitome of cheese..

I read the first in the Anita Blake series, by Laurell K Hamilton, although not really romance, it definatly left me wanting to read more. I should pick up more paranormal, as I am starting to get a taste for it...

message 34: by Regina (last edited Jun 21, 2010 08:30AM) (new)

Regina (reginar) I liked Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #1) and I have the next two, I just haven't brought myself to read them b/c I hear the series devolves aruond 8 or 9 and that seems depressing to commit myself to something I know is going to get bad. But I do want to read more.

Shell, do the books need to have a strong romance?

If you want time travel and romance -- each book with an HEA, Karen Moning delivers this with her Highlander series. The first is Beyond the Highland Mist (Highlander, #1) by Karen Marie Moning which I did not like, I also did not like her second one To Tame a Highland Warrior (Highlander, #2) by Karen Marie Moning (quite an endorsement huh? ) but with nubmer three The Highlander's Touch (Highlander, #3) by Karen Marie Moning and on -- it is a passionate read with good romance and some yummy scenes. :) And you don't have to read Nos. 1 and 2, to have 3 make sense. But 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are connected. I should say that the HL is a quick, simple read -- not complicated and nothing fancy. I read this series b/c the worlds are connected to the series below. This series is not great literature.

Karen Moning also has a Fever series which is amazing. There are 4, the 5th is out in January 2010. It is urban fantasy with a hint of romance that is supposed to be concluded in book 5. The first book is Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning

Another great Urban Fantasy series is the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews (a team of husband and wife writing). It also has a hint of romance that is thankfull and finally consumated in book 4, here is the first: Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews

I also really like the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, I would say the same thing -- it is Urban Fantasy and the romance progresses over the series, the first is Mercy Thompson Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

One of my favorites that is urban fantasy but has a strong romance is the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost -- there are 4 out right now, you can't go wrong with this series, here is the first one: Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) I still have to read the 2nd one

Based on the cover of the Fever series alone, I would've thought it had more than a 'hint' of romance..Lol... And normally, I do need romance to keep me interested, but not always. I have picked up a few books as of late, that had very little, if not any romance, and I enjoyed them. I guess it really depends on the writing style, and the story..

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 8 comments LKH's Anita Blake books are not paranormal romance. They are Urban Fantasy books. You do not get a HEA at the end of each books.

Same with KMM's Fever series. Great series, although the cliffhangers are a killer. : )

I'm not much for Urban Fantasy, but I liked those a lot. Who knew a gargoyle could be so sexy. ;-) Decided not to read her other series, since it was described as having very little romance.

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) I like PNR in all it`s forms except the way too many werewolves and cats.
