Maaf. Saya pun tak pernah. Bukunya In the Footsteps of the Prophet: Lessons from the Life of Muhammad sudah lama ada dalam wishlist tapi belum beli-beli.

Hi, just would like to update. Tariq Ramadan was here in Malaysia. At the moment I am writing this he should just finished his talk in UIA, Gombak.
I missed both of his talk. The other one was in ISTAC. It's just did not not occur to me that he'd be here again after his the last visit in December 2009.
On July 12 at 8.00pm, he will give a lecture entitled “Is Liberty an Islamic Value?” at the Jalan Duta campus of International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), while another talk on “Islam and the West: Conversations with History”, will be delivered at the International Islamic University in Gombak the next day at 9.00 am.

Disebabkan thread ini dan promosi Johnny, saya baru saja membeli 'What I Believe'. Belum baca lagi, baru belek-belek je. Dia ni bukan Muslim Liberal kan?

Sebab saya teramat konfius - all my life I have always thought of myself as a liberal moslem (as opposed to being a zealot) BUT bila Tun Mahathir a few years back mentioned that he himself has never been able to define himself as anything but a fundamental moslem, I tend to agree with him jugak. Sebab how can you be anything BUT fundamental in practising Islam? Despite all the negative imagery the West seem to pile on "fundamentalists". 'Kan?

Well, different people have different opinions of the definitions.
For me, liberal Muslims are those kind of people who profess to be Muslim but regard Islam, in fact all religion, as a personal choice to be practised according to one's wishes and everybody else mind your own business. Example, a person who claims to be muslim but sees nothing wrong with drinking alcohol. "Aku punya pasal la. Aku minum tak kacau kau pun."
Famous 'liberal Muslims' in M'sia: Farish Noor, Sisters In Islam (SIS)
Those who claim that Islam needs to be reformed have been labelled as 'Liberal Muslims' as well. Or 'Moderate Muslims' by the west (which shows how much they know about Islam because Islam by definition is moderate)
That's why I asked whether Tariq Ramadan is like this. I am biased against these so-called 'liberal Muslims'. You are either liberal or Muslim. Can't be both. Because from what I've seen, those who claim to be liberal Muslims propose changes to Islam that goes against the Quran and Sunnah (introducing women judges in Syariah Courts for example. Lantak kau lah, Sharizat!)
I also don't agree with the term Fundamental Muslim...but that's a whole 'nother story.

Bukan secara separuh jiwa mahupun suku hati spt muslim liberal. mana yg suka jek amik, mana yg tak disukai tu semuanya depa main lempar buang ikut suka hati depa jek.
Pendapat saya beliau kritikal tetapi amat menggalakkan discourse.
So, it is not wrong to question everything.

Alhamdulillah. Ada juga yang sempat pergi. Terima kasih Nazifah.

In any case, I believe that in order to make an informed decision about any issue, one must not only read from those whose views one generally agrees with, but one must also read from those whose views we don't. The ability to get out of our comfort-zones and read up on the writers, groups, organizations that run against the grain of one's accepted mores is, in my opinion, a nescessity so that one can make an informed decision. In this case, reading widely is critical.

Norain MT wrote: "Tariq Ramadan is the grandson of Hasan al-Banna, the founder of Ikhwanul Muslimin. The West hates Muslim Brotherhood so there are many misunderstandings regarding the man himself."
Doesn't mean anything. Having a pious and radical grandfather doesn't mean the grandchild would be pious and/or radical. Doesn't mean he won'tbe, but doesn't me he would.
The book is still in the 'to-read' pile.

"
Doesn't mean anything to you but others don't necessarily think so. Ikhwanophobic is quite a phenomenon here, they make it sounds like Hassan al-Banna himself is a brute.
Oh,dunia!
Ikhwanaphobic? Islamo-phobia is much easier to pronounce.
(seriously, Aussies are getting their knickers in a twist over him?)

Islamophobic is one thing. Ikhwanophobic is quite another thing. It is a fear for the members of Muslims Brotherhood. They are seen as Islamists, fundamentalists and terrorists.
Not only in Australia, but also the rest of the world. But yeah, it can be quite terrifying here. Got yelled at by a man. "Terrorist, take it off!" Just because I cover my head.
Dunia!
