Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) So, Christine and I decided to start an American Idol thread. Post any chat about American Idol in this thread please.

The last good season because no more Simon after this. Boo hoo.

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Agreed, although I am looking forward to what his new show will be like.

Who are your favorites so far on this season? I like this little Katie Stevens. Watching now...

message 3: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) JEALOUS you are watching now Christine while I am at work.

I like Crystal (my fave girl) and Lily. Endre likes the red head.

The guys really stepped it up last night, thank goodness. But the Asian guy, the guy who sang the Marvin Gaye song, and the guy that they canned then called back have GOT to go!! My fave guy is one who performed last last night -- with the raspy voice.

Sorry I don't know everyone's names!!

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll be careful to respect the west coasters on elimination nights. :)

message 5: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Tomorrow night I have book club meeting -- GRRRRR!!!

message 6: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) On the woman's side I like Lilly, Katie, Crystal, and Siobahn.

On the guy's side I like Casey and I think Lee, probably some others too.

Often, in many seasons, I've had a very favorite person from the very beginning, changing only if they got voted off, but I don't feel that way this season. I want to see some more performances before I settle on my very favorite(s).

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I can't remember any names yet. I like that one guy that went last, and I like the guy that Cara (is that how you spell her name?) embarrasses with her ridiculous crush, and I like the little guy who is the youngest...I could stick him in my pocket.

Katie and Crystal, and that girl who gave herself a mohawk haircut....those are my favorite girls so far.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Diane D. wrote: "Tomorrow night I have book club meeting -- GRRRRR!!!"

What book? Are you going to DVR the show tonight?

message 9: by Mary (new)

Mary | 245 comments Yay! American Idol. Thanks for starting this thread! I also like Katie, Crystal and Siobhan (loved her look last night!) and for the guys Casey, Lee, Big Mike and the nervous guy.

Also, I never thought I'd be saying this but I kind of miss Paula. The judging has been a little off for me this year.

message 10: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Hi Christine -- Book club will be discussing A Mercy. I don't have a DVR ;(
We voted last night for Crystal, Michele and Lily.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Who is Siobhan? I forgot, I like Big Mike too!

message 12: by Kathryn (last edited Mar 04, 2010 09:02AM) (new)

Kathryn | 375 comments Oooh, yay! Thanks for creating this thread. "American Idol" is my TV version of "comfort reads" ;-)

What did you guys think about the "controversial decision" to move the girls to Wednesday night to allow Crystal to perform? I think she is definitely a front-runner and am personally glad because she is one of my favorites. But, I wonder if they would have been so accommodating if one of the "bottom rung" singers was the one in question. Thankfully, the guys seemed WAY better than last week, so I guess it didn't hurt them any to go on Tuesday.

I think my favorite guys are Aaron Kelly and Alex Lambert. I think Big Mike is fun to watch but his style isn't really what I'm into. I keep hoping Andrew Garcia will be better--he has a really interesting voice and my sister saw his "Paula Abdul" audition piece and said it was amazing.

For girls, I think Crystal, Lilly and Siobhan. I like the tone of Didi's voice and she seems really nice but I think she will need to "step it up a bit."
I think Katelyn and Katie and Paige are talented but just not really wowing me at this point.

Also, how do you all feel about Ellen as the new judge? I love Ellen but I just kind of feel she is unnecessary to the show at this point. I'm surprised they didn't just keep it Randy, Kara and Simon. I am SO bummed Simon is leaving but I honestly can't blame him--I think he's a creative and ambitious person and is probably just getting bored with the whole Idol thing. I hope that the new project he brings to America will prove great entertainment.

message 13: by Diane (last edited Mar 04, 2010 11:50AM) (new)

Diane (dianedj) Crystal gave me chills last night. Love her.
I think that since she was in the hospital it was a fair call to move the girls to Thursday. I would hope they would have done the same for anyone, as a hospital emergency is not like having a cold or something....

Kathryn -- Andrew Garcia was my favorite guy, but the past two weeks I have been very disappointed. I think Big Mike was the front runner this week.

I also agree that Ellen as a judge is not adding anything to the show. I think everyone only really cares what Randy, Kara and esp Simon have to say.

message 14: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Someone posted that American Idol is their TV "comfort show." True for me, too! Along with So You Think You Can Dance".

My favorite guy so far is Lee Dewyze, followed by a kind of 3-way tie of Alex Lambert, Andrew Garcia, and Casey James.

Favorite girls: #1 is Siobahn. Man, that girl has some pipes! Close #2 is Crystal. After that, I like Lilly and Katelyn. I'd like to see Didi and Lacey step it up a bit...I like them, but from what I've seen so far, I don't see either of them winning it all.

And I like Ellen, actually...even though she doesn't really NEED to be there, I enjoy her humor and input. And I love Simon, and I'm not sure I'll be able to watch Idol without him. *sniff* Of all the judges, I'd like to see Kara go...she annoys the snot out of me.

message 15: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Grrr. Goodreads just ate my comment. Will save before sending this time:

So, I'm happy. None of my 6 favorites (see above) left. I like a few others too.

The only reason I'm watching this season (I was going to take a break) is that it's Simon's last season. I don't know that I'll watch again, especially since I'm trying to cut back on tv to allow more reading time. (This group has me watching Survivor again of course. ;-)) But, I'm happy I'm watching because I like a lot of people this season.

I'm not voting at all though.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't vote either. I used to "pretend vote" to satisfy my daughter when she loved that guy...Sanjia? (spelling of names is not my strong point)

I was fine with those eliminations last night, although a little bit surprised at the final girl elimination. I really need to learn the names, sheesh!

message 17: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Hi Everyone -- I was fine with the eliminations, except for Michelle .... I think a couple of other girls definitely could have gone before her.

message 18: by Mary (new)

Mary | 245 comments I was surprised about Michelle also. Unless Lacey really steps it up next week it will be her turn for elimination.

message 19: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) This is my first season watching (my neighbor kept talking about it). I really like the dreadlocks girl. I'm having a hard time remembering the names, too.

message 20: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Scout wrote: "This is my first season watching (my neighbor kept talking about it). I really like the dreadlocks girl. I'm having a hard time remembering the names, too."

That's Crystal Bowersocks. She's awesome.

message 21: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Yes, I really think she is. Not what you'd expect on a network show, don't you think?

message 22: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Is everyone ready for the girls tonight?

message 23: by Fran (new)

Fran | 21 comments So far my favorites are Crystal, Lily and Sobian. I can't wait to hear what they will do tonight.

message 24: by Diane (last edited Mar 09, 2010 12:03PM) (new)

Diane (dianedj) My favorites are Crytal and Lily.

message 25: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Barbara, I don't know everyone's name, but there is one guy that I don't know why he is still there - I call him Mullett hair .... he was the one that was called back after he was already eliminated. Is that Todrick?

message 26: by Fran (new)

Fran | 21 comments Tim Urban is the kid who was brought back on the show He kind fits in with the Jonas Brothers style of music. Alex Lambert is the kid with the mullett. Todrick is the dancer. I think he will be one of the guys that will go home next.

message 27: by Fran (new)

Fran | 21 comments My boyfriend says the same thing about Alex Lambert. He says he sounds like a young Rod Stewart. I really like him.

message 28: by Fran (new)

Fran | 21 comments I have to be honest. I had to look on the Idol website. I cheated.

message 29: by Fran (new)

Fran | 21 comments I cant get the names right either. When they get to the top 10 I will start to remember the names.

message 30: by Mary (new)

Mary | 245 comments I'm looking forward to hearing the girls. I like Crystal, Siobhan and Katelyn.

message 31: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Everyone seems to like Crystal :)

message 32: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) I actually think Tim Urban and Alex Lambert have mullett hair. Thanks for the names Fran! I like big Mike, too.

message 33: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) My favorite was Crystal. I disagree with everyone, I guess: I really like Katie too. I'm really aware that I do have these maternal feelings for her, but I also really love her voice.

For me: Crystal and Katie and Lilly and Siobahn should stay. Not sure who I think the other two should be.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I missed last night because I had this parent meeting thing. My daughter told me that most of the girls weren't very good. Hopefully I can find a recap.

message 35: by Mary (new)

Mary | 245 comments Christine, I like Michael Slezak's recaps on ew.com. Last night's recap is titled "Octo Fuss".

I loved Siobhan's performance and really liked Crystal's. I'm worried for Katelyn. I think she deserves another chance based on her first two performances but I agree she was disappointing last night.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you, I'll look it up.

message 37: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Still loving Crystal.
Lisa, I agree with you that Katie is very good also. Her voice is so strong. Even if she doesn't make it as the Idol winner this year, I'm sure we'll be hearing more from her. Like Barbara says, unripe banana. She's young and I'm sure she'll figure out her niche.

Bring on the guys!

message 38: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 375 comments Last night was better than I expected, overall. Plus, I was happy to see it in one hour so we didn't have all the filler stuff that drags on sometimes. I liked Crystal, Lilly and Siobahn. I also like Didi--I just like the sound of her voice and I think she did a great job last night but wasn't so good in previous weeks, but I'd like to see her get another chance. I also really like the sound of Katie's voice and I can't fault her for doing what the judges asked her to do. Meanwhile, I think Katelyn has a good voice, too, but was so boring last night :-( I kind of like the style of that girl with the red hair--forget her name--that sang sitting down. She needs to do some Dolly Parton songs, I think, more country-ish. I've never been a fan of Paige, I'm afraid--she seems nice, but her tone just doesn't really suit me and last night was kind of a disaster. As for Crystal, I love watching her and think she's great though I don't see myself going out and buying her CDs at this point in time.

As for the guys, I am excited about tonight and I really REALLY want Todrick out of there (love your description of him Barbara, HAHA!) (Sorry, Chandra!) I agree Tim Urban needs to be on "High School Musical" or something instead of Idol, he's adorable but his voice doesn't hold up against the others. I personally hate bananas, but love the "ripening banana" on the show and hope he stays strong and humble.

message 39: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) You know, I was a huge fan of Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken and Carrie whatever her name is, etc. etc. and so many more. I thought I'd go out and buy their CDs but I haven't bought any of them, and only a very few songs. I really enjoy the show but when I comes to their recordings, I guess I'm not so interested.

Re Katie, They keep telling her to sing her age, but though she's only 17 (16 at auditions) I think she has an old soul, and if she picked the songs to record that appealed to me, I could see buying her CD. I hope she doesn't go, but she probably will. She's been at risk a few times already.

message 40: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 375 comments Well, Chandra, I don't dislike Todrick as much as I disliked Jermaine but I'd still rather see T go than some of the other contestants--I'm not a big fan of his vocal style, either.

message 41: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 375 comments Lisa, that's so true about the CDs! I have only purchased a few and was mostly very disappointed. Carrie's was very good, and I do like Kris Allen's, but I though Clay's was a bit bland and I was SO disappointed with what they did to Ruben--it was a totally different style than what he did on the show (I felt) and I didn't like it at all despite my affection for "The Velvet Teddybear." I also loved Bo Bice and thought his CD was decent but not as good as it could have been. Haven't been able to bring myself to buy Adam Lambert's CD--it just doesn't seem like my style even though I loved him on the show. Oh, and I finally downloaded Jason Catros' latest songs (he has five out with a full album to be released later this spring) and am eagerly awaiting a quiet time to listen to them. I loved him, too! ;-) I really think he'd be so good at children's songs--I mean that as a compliment, not the "Wheels on the Bus" stuff but really heartfelt songs like Raffi did. -- Long shot that anyone here knows about Raffi, but, hey, thought I'd put it out there ;-)

message 42: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I love Raffi!!!!!! I have a few of his CDs. Know about him thanks to friends who had kids when he was coming out with many songs.

message 43: by Kathryn (last edited Mar 10, 2010 01:41PM) (new)

Kathryn | 375 comments Yay, Raffi fans!!! :-D (His Christmas CD is one of my favorite things about the holiday, tradition-wise.) I also loved Rosenshantz (sp?) and Tom Chapin (brother of Harry Chapin).

I loved Adam Lambert's "Mad World" too. It is SO beautiful and haunting. I think that's my favorite thing Idol has done in recent years, making the weekly songs available on iTunes. When I think back to performances I liked (such as Ruben Studdard) but could never get to keep, boo hoo! Now, I have a bunch of Adam Lambert songs that I enjoy from the show and I don't have to bother with his debut CD to enjoy his voice. Yay!

message 44: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) So, tonight I really liked Mike and Lee. Also Casey and Tim.

message 45: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Casey is it for me, with the guys. He has a unique voice, and he plays guitar well. He's never off, or "pitchy" as they say. I think the judges have been putting him down a little after Kara seemed to have a crush on him. She went over the top, which wasn't too smart on her part.

At this point, I think Crystal's got it.

message 46: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I hope Crystal has got it. I really like her. Of course, if they have the theme nights she might falter, but she'd probably be able to find a song that would work and make it her own. Of course, anything can happen in the next 12 weeks.

message 47: by Mary (new)

Mary | 245 comments I thought the guys, as a group, were much better than the girls, although I agree that Crystal is great with Siobhan right on her heels. Hard to pick two for elimination but, for me, Andrew and Aaron gave the weakest performances.

I was so glad that Simon called Kara out on her criticism of Aaron. He's right, much of the judging this season has been confusing - "make it your own" leads to "you took a beloved song and made it unrecognizable", "we loved you back in Hollywood week with your acoustic guitar" leads to "you need to get out of your comfort zone", "sing this not that, too old, too Broadway etc." leads to "you don't know who you are". Sheesh! As a viewer I'm confused so I can imagine how confusing it must be for some of these young singers!

message 48: by Kathryn (last edited Mar 11, 2010 08:01AM) (new)

Kathryn | 375 comments I agree the judges give extremely confusing "advice" to the contestants and no wonder some of them are questioning "what type of artist they are" when the judges tell them they ought to be doing something else. *sigh*

I was pleasantly surprised by last night. I like Aaron but thought the song was not as good as the judges said and that it had lots of "pitch problems" but I still hope he makes the Top 12. I also really liked Alex, as usual--I think he just keeps getting stronger and I love the song choices lately.

Funny, I was saying how much I wanted Todrick to go home and yet last night I thought he was really good and one of my favorite of the night! Maybe you'll have a chance with that, Chandra ;-) And I also thought Tim would be horrible with his song choice but it ended up being okay...

Also, while I've enjoyed Big Mike's personality I was never much for his songs... But, I LOVED his performance last night and definitely hope he'll be in the Top 12 if he does more songs like that. To quote Randy, "Duuude!"

;-)

Then the judges really like Lee but I keep forgetting about him...

Guess I really am not sure who will be going home tonight!

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

I loved Big Mike last night, but I was annoyed by Kara's weeping. She seems so over the top this year that I can't take her seriously. I never was a big Kara fan, but now I feel like slapping her a little.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

Mary wrote: "I thought the guys, as a group, were much better than the girls, although I agree that Crystal is great with Siobhan right on her heels. Hard to pick two for elimination but, for me, Andrew and Aar..."

I was glad about Simon's comments as well. You hit it right on the head, Mary.
