Our group read for March is Guilty Pleasures but I thought it would be fun to start a thread to discuss the entire series for those who have read it.

Spoilers should be expected in this thread.

Kelly (kelly_l) | 21 comments Hi! First, I'm really new around here but this is a genre I should fit well into. :)

Anita Blake...I LOVE Anita! I'm only about 5 books in on her, but the more I read, the more I love. She's comfortable and you laugh and you cheer and sometimes you worry for her. And the romance...ah the romance. :)

I'm anxious to read what ya'll are saying.

message 3: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (audiobookmel) I have read all the Anita books at least twice. I am also an extremely big fan of listening to them on audiobook (the new reader is not any good, but from Cerulean Sins through Blood Noir is Cynthia Holloway who is wonderful).

I also have all of the comic books which are wonderful also. I guess you could say that I am into all things Anita. It is my favorite book series at this time.

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 77 comments I own all of the books in the series, I have re-read them several times. I am not sure, though how much longer I will contiue to read them if something doesn't happen soon. (and I mean along the lines of how it used to be with a great mystery and all)

message 5: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) Loved the old books. You know, when Anita was a kick-ass-take-no-prisoners executioner. Before all the "ardeur" garbage and the books started to read like bad Penthouse Forum letters. I quit reading after CERULEAN SINS. Then before SKIN TRADE came out I thought it might be like the old books so I ordered it. Shame on me! I'll not get suckered back in to the series again.

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 77 comments I get a lot of books from the library first, and then buy them later if they are worth it. That way, I don't get stuck.

I turned SKIN TRADE back around on eBay and actually made a little on it because I got such a good discount on it when I originally bought it.

message 8: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilithesque) When I started reading the series I was buying them at my favorite secondhand store and read Guilty Pleasures and then the Blue moon and the one about fire I had read the more sexed up ones early on. I actually had a hard time going back and filling in Circus of the damned and and some pre sex ones. So what I am saying is my favorite book is the Butterfly one. Verrrry sex infused.

Early anita was too inhibited and snivelly IMO.

message 9: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Lily I also like Anita a lot better now - she was so hard - hard personality, hard to get along with in the early books. I didn't really care for her at all in the beginning.

I enjoyed the mysteries in the first few books but I'll have to agree that Anita is a much stronger character and woman in the later books. She's really opened up her heart throughout the series.

Bullet is coming out in a few days (6/1)!

What are your hopes for the lates Anita Blake book?

From the description here on goodreads it looks like there will be more Jean-Claude! YAY I'm excited that there will also be more vampire politics - I'm always intrigued by the politics & world created in these mega-series, almost as much as I like the characters in some cases.

message 12: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I just discovered Anita. I have read the first two and am looking forward to #3. IMO, the first two need some hook ups or something -- I am not a big fan of HEA, but it just seems false that there is nothing. I have heard Anita doesn't get together with Jean Claude until 6? So frustrating to wait! I am really looking forward to figuring out which side of the fence I am on -- if the transition with Anita will bother me.

I thought the ending with Phillip (in Guilty Pleasures) was so very sad. Anita's treatment of Phillip and her disgust for him, made me feel bad for him. I also thought the entire scene at the house with the other people there to be with vamps was bizarre. Made my skin crawl.

Laughing Corpse was so good, and so much better -- not that Guilty Pleasures was lacking.

message 13: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I felt the same way Regina. I wanted to see more romance. Then the further along the books go there are tons of romance.

Well, I wouldn't call it "romance", but there's more, and kinkier, sex than you'll find in a book of erotica. And not nearly as well written, for the most part!

message 15: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I have heard it wasn't well written erotica. Well, I am looking forward to reading at least through 10. Circus of the Damned (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #3) by Laurell K. Hamilton started off with a bang.

Manisha | 2 comments I really liked the first book, i am going to start Flirt the 18th book

message 17: by Manisha (new)

Manisha | 2 comments You have to be really commited because at times the series drags on but then it gets better. Overall its a very good series ! :)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) The first 10 books are some of the best books I have read. I was so hooked on the series years ago it was ridiculous, I re-read the books often and think very highly of them. They will always hold a large chunk of my heart. The ending of the series now, though, yech. Too many problems and I'm terribly saddened how one of the best series ever written has changed so much.

message 19: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I just saw that there is date for #20 to be released next year.

message 20: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 77 comments Yup, I added it to my shelves and then created a comment saying "I will not read it. I will not read it. I will not read it." Hopefully I'll stick to my guns because the last one was a disaster for me but I find it hard to stop reading after I've been committed to it for so long.

HA! I've said that about the last couple Anita books - but I always end up reading them. What can I say, it's an addiction.

I totally agree I have loved AB for years and the last few have been nothing but porn on paper and that breaks my heart!
