Dont give anything away!

message 2: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 10 comments I just joined this group recently, and I had actually decided to read the book before I saw it was this month's group read. Needless to say - I'll be finishing it tonight! But I won't give anything away. I'm interested to see what kind of discussion this book incites.

message 3: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild I started The Postmistress a week ago, but then found out that Shutter Island was the March book club read - so put aside Sarah Blake's and began the journey into SI. Loved the start and found it fun/creepy, especially because I grew up in the exact area that this takes place. Loved to hear the reference to Nantasket Beach as it was one of the beaches we frequented as kids.

Then I made a HUGE mistake!!! I usually read the posts on the non-spoiler thread and then a few of the ones with spoilers since they usually go along a few chapters at a time. Well, not this time! The very first sentence in the very first post basically gave away the ending. I am so bummed and don't know if I want to finish reading it. I guess I've learned my lesson!!

Notice to all who do not want the big spoiler - do not read the spoilers thread. I'm not being bitchy to anyone who posts the end of the book on the spoilers thread - just venting a little.

message 4: by Tara (new)

Tara Oh, F1, thank you for the warning! I sometimes peek at the spoilers thread too but I hear this book has such an unexpected twist, I'm glad for the heads up. I'm sorry it's at your expense though :(

Also, for those that have maybe read it already or seen the movie, is this book like, "lose-sleep-at-night, keep a light on in the house" scary? Or is it more creepy and/or suspenseful? I don't really know much about it aside from the trailers for the film, but I'm on the waiting list at the library. I just want to know what I'm in for!

message 5: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild Tara - although I'm only about 1/3 into the book, based on Lehane's previous reads he seems to be more of the thoughtfully suspenseful than gory or creepy - BUT I won't know for sure until I get further into it.

I hope my post was taken more of a warning than a whine!

message 6: by Tara (new)

Tara Oh good, I like the sound of "thoughtfully suspensful" and I definitely took your post as a warning, not a whine! I just know how bummed I get when a book gets spoiled, so I feel for you (someone spoiled HP 6 for me and I was crushed...).

message 7: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild So far I'm loving the book and it seems to be flying by. I got back to reading it and after last night I realized it will be a quick read...and not worth the worry over knowing some of the ending.

Alicia (kalypso) | 102 comments My sister just got me this book for my birthday! I am super excited to start reading it!

message 9: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 10 comments Finished it last week - great book! I recommend seeing the movie also (saw it last night). I'd be interested to hear some of your opinions on the movie.

message 10: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I started it Saturday evening and since I have been sick all day yesterday, I am now 38% through it (I am reading it on the kindle). It is very interesting and it is a page turner. I have not seen the movie but I will after I finish it.

I even listened to it on the way into work. I usually drive in with my hubby but he took today off to go snowmobiling in VT. So I got 45 minutes of reading done this morning and will do it again on the way home.

I have Sirius radio in my car. It mounts on the dash next to the stereo and it plays through the tape player of my car's radio. So I unplugged it from the Sirius radio into the headphone jack of the kindle so I could hear it through the radio's speakers. It worked well!

message 11: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild Diane - I've never used the audio capabilities of my Kindle...I need to get with the program!

message 12: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I was able to listen to 20% of the book in my total commute yesterday. But it does drain the kindle's battery. I emptied mine about 5 minutes from home yesterday. Listening to the computer-ish voice takes some getting used to since there is no emotion in the reading.

I have to get my butt in gear and finish this book by Saturday morning. Hubby wants to see the movie this weekend! I think that it is doable!!! I cannot stop reading it but sleep and work gets in the way! LOL!

message 13: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild I've been trying to finish it, but am taking some meds for my back and cannot get past a chapter or two per night. It must be finished very soon!!!

Im starting the book tonite. I love how we ask each other if its "leave a light on in the house" scary. I love creepy reads, but I also love a good mental thriller..... CANNOT wait to start!!

message 15: by KarenLee (new)

KarenLee I really, really loved this book. I've asked my son to go with me to see the movie, I don't think I can do it on my own and it's not my spouse's cup of tea! Hope to go Saturday.

message 16: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild Finally finished it last night - and now I can go to the "spoilers" section!

message 17: by Jotrys (new)

Jotrys Started the book last December. But only read a couple of chapters then. Good to see that it's the book for March! I think that I will start again at the beginning.

message 18: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) I just finished it! I'm off to read the spoilers!

message 19: by Westiemom (new)

Westiemom | 35 comments I started reading it last night, its good. I cant wait to finish it and then go see the movie. The movie looks spooky.

message 20: by Jotrys (new)

Jotrys I am liking it so far (a third way in). The following is no spoiler just a comment.

quote page chap 1 page 12, when Teddy was sick on the boat over to Shutter Island by the toilet:
"..., he washed his hands and face, checked his appearance in a small mirror mounted over the sink, most of the glass eroded by the sea salt, a small cloud in the center where Teddy could just make out his reflection ..."

Glass eroded? Is this turn of phrase OK?

message 21: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10198 comments Mod
Are you asking if it is possible for glass to erode?

message 22: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild Jotrys, if you've ever lived near the ocean you would understand the salty sea air erosion factor. Yes, the salty air can erode glass, wood, just about everything.

message 23: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Frary | 90 comments Finished it yesterday. It took me all of four days to read. What a great book! Highly reccomend it.

message 24: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) I wasn't going to read this book. I wasn't. And then it somehow found it's way into the shopping cart when I saw it on discount. But I still wasn't going to read it until after I'd finished another book I committed to this month. Yeah...

I'm now 40 pages from the end. Should take about an hour to finish tonight. It is sooo hard not to pull out here at work today. *sigh*

message 25: by Elena (new)

Elena I started this morning and I am about 60%.

What came first, the book or the movie? I have the feeling the movie was done first. I am afraid to do a search to find out. I don't want to be spoiled.

Elena, the movie is just coming out now. The book is older, so definitely the book. Just check the inside pages to see the print date.

Elena Lori wrote: "Elena, the movie is just coming out now. The book is older, so definitely the book. Just check the inside pages to see the print date."

Didn't think about that...on the Kindle, that information is at the end. But I looked up the published date on the book description here on GR. It is 2003.

message 28: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Finished the last 40 pages after dinner this evening, took all of about 45 minutes, if that. All I can say is...WHOA!

message 29: by Heather (new)

Heather I'm halfway through and am thinking this is the BEST way to find myself active in this group again!

An excellent suspense novel! My mother, aunt, and I all read it one after the other, and couldn't talk about it enough. The twist is mind-blowing!
