Banjomike | 5529 comments Can someone hide this one:

http://www.goodreads.com/quizzes/take...

when I try it I get "This quiz is now hidden from the quiz index and search pages." correctly but the quiz is still visible, still not hidden. Only taken 2 times so shouldn't need a super, but it won't listen to me.

Lisa (not getting friends updates) Vegan (lisavegan) | 2403 comments Banjomike,

It doesn't seem to be working. I tell it to hide, go back to it, and it invites me to hide. It won't listen to me either. It looks as though it's one Goodreads will have to do.

I think because it's invalid. I'll let Louise know.

message 4: by Louise (new)

Louise | 34 comments Rivka was right it was invalid. I've hidden it though.

Thanks, Louise! :)

Lisa (not getting friends updates) Vegan (lisavegan) | 2403 comments Thanks, Rivka & Louise.

message 7: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5529 comments Was it invalid because of the number of questions?

message 8: by rivka, Librarian Moderator (new)

rivka | 39983 comments Mod
Yup.

message 9: by Louise (new)

Louise | 34 comments Yeah, it only had 1 question, which was invalid. I added validation a little later in the step of creating quizzes, which means there are still some quizzes floating around that were created before the validation got put into place.

If you can't seem to hide a quiz, just post a link to them here and I can go in and manually hide them.

Thanks, Louise, Will do.

Banjomike | 5529 comments This is another "one question quiz".
It doesn't strictly speaking need to be hidden since the solitary question is:
1) book related
2) not brain dead

but the tags are rubbish and it won't let me edit them either so I think hiding and deleting all the tags is probably best. (No database should knowingly allow faulty data, it will bite you eventually, =famous saying).

message 12: by Louise (new)

Louise | 34 comments On second thought, for the one question quizzes (and ones that are rubbish), would it be worth it to message the quiz creator and ask them to fix it? And then if they don't fix it within a week or so, we can assume they don't care about it, and I can delete it? That'll certainly clean up a lot of brain dead quizzes we have just taking up space.

I suspect that would only work for quizzes with minor problems.

For the braindead variety, if someone creates a quiz where the first question is (actual example):

Ummm the most random questions that don't have anything to do with books! (For people that are only on this site to make fun of it!)

Ok. Pick the answer to this question that you think is answered by most people:
What's your favorite color?

green
red
blue
pink

OR (actual example):
How many sisters I have

none
alot
uno
five
careless

OR (actual example):
Who is the smartest person in the world?

Albert Einstein
Beyonce
YOU
ME

then in my opinion asking them anything is a total waste of time. The quizzes that get hidden deserve to be hidden.

message 14: by Louise (new)

Louise | 34 comments Oh, I'm not saying they don't deserve to be hidden. I'd rather just delete them altogether, but it would be good if we notify the creator first.

message 15: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5529 comments Yes, I'm beginning to think that many of them should just be deleted. I know I spoke-up for hiding them in the first place but that was before I realised just how much rubbish there was.

How about putting a much larger warning on the create page in the quiz guidelines box or at least a statement that dross/rubbish/etc will be ground into the dust without warning (using nice words rather than invective and such). We could optionally message people if their quizzes seem to be redeemable but most of the ones I've hidden, and that must be hundreds, would need to be replaced not edited.

message 16: by willaful (new)

willaful I think that is a far better solution than hiding, which doesn't seem all that effective so far.

message 17: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5529 comments I've just noticed that the "one question quiz" from message 11 is still there. Obviously we mere mortals cannot hide it and the tags are still rubbish, not editable (at least by me) and still appear in the list.

I think we need Louise. Cue Blade Runner music.

Louise | 34 comments Do I get to be Harrison Ford or the cigarette smoking robot?

Either way, I hid it.

Both. You're just that good.

Oh, her, for certain. But the tobacco is optional, as it has always been.

Banjomike | 5529 comments These are four quizzes on Mario Brothers games and one on Pokemon games. I've hidden the older ones before and even the newest one twice but they keep coming back. Do they get unhidden if the creator modifies them or what? My view is they are not bookies so they should go.

Note: the problem is not with hiding them, they hide OK. But they come back (like the cat) or they get unhidden.

message 22: by Louise (new)

Louise | 34 comments Ah, they get unhidden because the quiz creator can still check the "make this quiz visible on the index page" (aka: un-hide) when they go to edit their quiz. I guess people aren't getting the hint that their quizzes are violating our guidelines.

Maybe I'll remove that option for the quiz creator when they edit a quiz. I'll put it on my todo list.

message 23: by Banjomike (last edited Mar 17, 2010 04:30PM) (new)

Banjomike | 5529 comments That is probably for the best.

And in the meantime we might as well leave the Mario & Pokemon stuff alone.

message 24: by Louise (new)

Louise | 34 comments I took away the option to unhide quizzes from the quiz creator (if they're not already a librarian). Hide to your heart's content and users should not be able to reverse it now.

message 25: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5529 comments Yay. Mario, prepare to become one with the snows of yesteryear.

message 26: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5529 comments A quiz I've hidden before seems to be un-hidden again. It now has 79 takers and messages dated after it was previously hidden. Again. Twice, maybe.

http://www.goodreads.com/quizzes/resu...

Please hide.

message 27: by rivka, Librarian Moderator (new)

rivka | 39983 comments Mod
It says it is hidden. I suspect the creator is linking her friends to it.

message 28: by Banjomike (last edited Apr 05, 2010 04:26AM) (new)

Banjomike | 5529 comments That makes sense. It might be handy if there was an indication that the quiz WAS hidden even if we lower-class types cannot unhide it. I have visions of complaining about this one until paper is illegal and we are all using ereaders. Not that there is anything wrong with ereaders.

Also, if you do a search for:
you know me
in the quiz search box, do you get 48 results including a load of dumb, hidden, ones?

message 29: by rivka, Librarian Moderator (new)

rivka | 39983 comments Mod
47. But yeah.
