Sad because you wonder how likely it is that he would be able to find her. And if he ever did, would she be the mother that is iconized in the statue? How could this mother "lose" her children? There are so many possible scenarios.
It might exist. The artist seems to have drawn it from observation. The sheen of the bronze is very realistic. I would think that the best way to find out would be to read artist commentary on the work. I am not familiar with this artist, but I am sure they have written a thing or two about their motivation behind it.
