Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments Geez, I hope she was okay, KD!

I walked past one of those black houses in Olympia which had a big picture window, and a naked man just inside, once. Does that count, KD?

Cambridge (hsquare) | 509 comments Yes i once saw a man naked out of his wheelchair at a bus stop (as i drove by) he was awkwardly sitting in the bushes (he was clearly homeless and possibly a drug addict) how he got naked from the wast down and into a sort of bush and weeping i have no clue but the others at the bus stop ignored him and his chair was easily 10 feet from him and tipped over..... I called the police on my cell phone and gave them the info and the cross streets and bus stop, i had my children in the car.... but i couldn't just observe and ignore..... was very bizarre ..... kind of surreal......... and when i say sitting in the bushes it was more ground cover.....so you saw everything.......maybe going to the bathroom........ but he had no way to get back to his chair....... and he looked distraught weeping....... he needed help no question. (btw the police were less than sympathetic on the phone)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Wow, that's pretty crazy, KD. Did she look...aware, I guess?

I used to see naked people at Grateful Dead concerts.

They were never the people in attendance I wanted to see naked.

Félix (habitseven) They were never the people in attendance I wanted to see naked.

Funny how it tends to work out that way.

Rachel | 1107 comments ...weird. I live in a place where this rarely happens...Although..last year there was a dude who did it outside my friend's house. I don't know why..

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i just got back from the french quarter in NOLA and did NOT see any naked people except for a man's bare arse in the hotel across from us who apparently was mooning bourbon street from his room on the 12th floor

put it this way, you rarely just encounter enjoyable nakedness in public. usually it has a disgusting or weird vibe to it

Sarah | 13815 comments Last week leaving my writing group there was some kind of event going on in the gallery below. There were these two women posing for a photo with a painting, and I looked at them and thought "wow, they both have terrible bras on." It took me about thirty more seconds to realize that they were both naked and painted to look like they were wearing clothes.

message 8: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1107 comments Whoa...those painters are good! Hey, maybe that's what they'll do in the future when clothes go out of fashion! Or we run out of wool and silk and stuff because of the nuclear fallout. That may or may not have been caused by me.

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I don't think there are any nekkid people out in public in my world. I've never seen them, so they must not exist.

I however used to streak nekkid across the street to Jimmy Tuggle's house, so I could ride on the back of his Great Dane & play Lady Godiva. True story. (I was 4 btw)

message 17: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) We have the odd confused patient who strips down and wanders out of his room---it's always a male patient, I wonder why? My husband claims he goes out to feed the dogs or get the mail naked but I have never witnessed this and I don't believe him anyway, he's much too conservative for public nakedness.

message 18: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Buckley (anthonydbuckley) | 145 comments I was sitting on a Frence beach with my wife and kids, and I fell into conversation with a pretty young womam. Suddenly, without warning she took off her top, revealing naked breasts.

Being English - we can be very uptight - I must have looked (I actually was) ratjer startled. So she laughted at me in a kindly way. And we carried on our conversation.

It's the sort of thing that, if you are a middle aged Englishman, you remember

message 19: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I forgot to mention that the naked confused male patients who wander out into the hall often leave a trail of poop behind them.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments At my roommate's BDay party a couple of years ago, we played truth or dare. Marty's BFF D.J. (who's coming in town for a visit today) dared a guy to streak through the house yelling "I wanna ride a motorcycle"... and he did! And then he stood around conversing, completely comfortable with being naked and leaning against my knee while he talked. I, of course, was not comfortable with him leaning against my knee. Naked. I'm fairly good friends with the guy now and knowing him now as I do, his streaking is especially funny to me because he's pretty unassuming and quiet for the most part - he goes to bed at 8 and wakes at 5 to run before going to work... and hangs out with his dog, Kali, most of the time.

And another time, while visiting my step-grandparents in Key Biscayne, we spent the day poolside at my grandfather's old hotel in Miami. I was probably about 12 years old at the time. And late afternoon, about 2:30ish (I remember the time because the 3 o'clock afternoon showers occurred soon after they made an appearance and they all jumped in the pool at the same time when that happened) about 6 girls walked out... completely topless and speaking in French. I must've spent the rest of the afternoon just watching them and wishing I could take my top off, too.

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments "I must've spent the rest of the afternoon just watching them and wishing I could take my top off, too."

I wonder if most of us secretly wish we had the brass ovaries to go topless. I never could.

message 24: by Lori (new)

Lori In France or any topless beach in Europe you could!

Someone I knew specifically went to a nudist camp because he was insecure about his body, and had the most liberating experience. You just stop even seeing nakedness.

message 25: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I've always wanted to go to a nudist beach. There's one in Austin, TX - Hippie Hollow... it's on Lake Travis.

message 26: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Okay, question to the public here - my Mom & had this discussion the other day about nudity in other countries where it is more free - I said that their attitude about sex is much more free, casual and not as obsessed as Americans. She said that any culture where they allow public nudity or 'pornography' (her definiton & mine on that are quite different) that is readily available is a much more debased culture. That they are more obsessed & vulgar than ours.

What is the opinion here? Is America more or less obsessed, depraved &/or vulgar than other countries (i.e. Europe, the Netherlands, etc)?

message 27: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I think it's natural. I think Americans need to do some work around this. I seriously prefer the European attitude. I think we should be able to walk around topless and nude and not place such a stigma around it. I also think this is the attitude we should be teaching our children.

I used to babysit for this little girl whose mother kept a photograph of herself on her daughter's bedside table - she's standing outdoors and she's nude and pregnant with her daughter... Her daughter was maybe about 4ish when I babysat for her the first time and I continued to watch her until she was about 7ish, and I felt like she had a very healthy attitude about self image. I'm sure it was largely influenced by her mother's healthy attitude.

message 28: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments That's what I've always felt too. I look at my daughter and she absolutely loves being naked, is so secure in herself, and I hate teaching her about the social niceties (read: taboos) that we have in our country. The other day she asked me why girls can't go topless but guys can, I said basically that was what our society thought was acceptable. Her response, "That's just silly Mom!" Right on.

I wonder if because my Mom grew up in such prudish (and admittedly repressive) circumstances, backed by her religious beliefs, that she just can't see it from another point of view. Sometimes when talking with her I get all weird in my head about these things, like I'm the one that has a twisted point of view and she is the norm.

Aversion to nudity, feeling shame about nudity, shouldn't always merely be chalked up to living in a "repressive" society where healthy ideas about nudity and sex are squelched. Aversion and shame can exist naturally in children (maybe not babies and toddlers, but children, yes). I had a friend in high school who once showed me two nude photos of her and her sister that their parents had had done, professionally, when they were kids. In the photos they were probably 8 and 11 or something. Or 7 and 10. There were no mature breasts or genitalia showing, but they were nude photos. My friend was bothered by her photo, and had been when it was taken. She didn't want to be professionally photographed nude. Her parents insisted she do it because they thought it was beautiful and artistic, and innocent and childlike. They loved having it hang on the wall. But she was clearly a little damaged from being forced to do it.

And now my second nude story.

So today I'm sitting reading on my back porch. It's hot but out of the sun, a little bit of a breeze. It looks out on the house to our north, then there's a street, then a modern apartment building. Every once in awhile I look up at the windows of this building (the facade is nearly all windows) and today I see what appears to be a young woman, thinnish, nude but I only see her from her head down to the top of her hips, from the back. She appears to be towelling off her front. I go back to reading. Next time I look up she appears to be cleaning her apartment in a bikini. Which I get: it's very hot.

So I keep reading, maybe another 45 minutes, then I go inside. As I'm closing my kitchen door I suddenly see, on a higher floor, this quite large woman, buck naked, in her bathroom. Right in front of her window. Side view. I'm so shocked I just stare for about 20 seconds. She gets out a hair dryer. I go inside. I've had my fill.

What is it with these people - do they not know there are windows and porches facing them?

message 32: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments People get in trouble for being naked in front of windows around here every now and then. I always wonder about that. Apparently you're supposed to shut the shades or something.

Sure! I'm pretty ... exhibitionist? At least when I was younger/cuter. I loved Mardi Gras because I have cute boobs. And I've been to lots of nude beaches. My favorite part of baths is parading across the house nude before I get in.

message 38: by Sandy (new)

Sandy Hyatt-James (sandyhyatt-james) The trouble with nakedness is not showing it before ordinary "normal" people, it's displaying it before the perverts.
It simply isn't possible these days to display a child's naked innocence without a paedophile lurking in the wings ready to exploit it. These people hang about wherever kids might be, but many parents don't realise this.
I remember the big boo-hoo about that family in Australia who allowed a naked picture of their pubescent daughter to be hung in a public gallery. They saw it as art, but clearly weren't aware, or at least didn't want to think about, a group of people who would access a copy of the picture in order to have sex with their daughter - by proxy.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) First off, I completely agree that a child's safety should come first and foremost.

Unfortunately, not too long ago, when I posted a couple of bath-time pictures of my (then) infant son on a photo-hosting site to share with family members (set to privacy mode, so it wasn't viewable by anyone unless I allowed them access), the pics were removed by the website for inappropriate content.

It's completely understandable why the pictures were removed, but it makes me sad when you can't share a picture of your child with friends and family. The pics were just standard baby in the bath type pics that all of our parents took when we were kids (you know, the ones that you swear you'll use as blackmail when they bring a prom date home).

Sandy Hyatt-James (sandyhyatt-james) I agree. Children just don't have the same freedom these days. It's a pity that their "cuteness" can't be viewed in all its forms, without having to think of the unsavoury element among humanity.

Paul Perry (pezski) | 79 comments In my city of Sheffield we have several local "characters" (of the sort requiring strong medication) including one guy who would walk or cycle around town stark naked with nary a care in the world.

Another, was a black guy who would stand by one of the main roads dressed in full SS uniform Seig Heil'ing the traffic...

Today I caught a glimpse of the woman peeing.

The weird thing is, it's only her bathroom that has no curtains. Her bedroom, her living room, curtained solid.

Maybe she's dismembering corpses in the other rooms.

Samantha (samhanson) Just recently I was walking with my sister and friend to a subway in Philadelphia. We were in a really public place, near a park and city hall, and we noticed two girls pointing, shouting, and taking pictures of something across the street. When I turned to see what it was, there was a naked guy! Completely buck naked and just walking around. When we got to the subway station we asked a cop how to get to the line we wanted and noticed he was standing next to a pile of clothes, I guess they belonged to the man. Definitely an interesting experience!
