There used to be a "Get Your Stiletto In The Door" Contest, put on by the Chick Lit Writers portion of the Romance Writers of America...but am not sure if it still exists...I keep checking and hoping...

Check it out! Become famous with one page...great practice writing an opening page to a book..although same as the memoir looks like it costs money to submit...but you can read others' first pages for free and rate them...maybe good way to get tips...

Look out for the next quarterly writer's contest on www.wow-womenonwriting.com for Spring 2010. Looks like entries will close May 31st although they have not officially opened up the entries. It says there is a fee of $10 that pays for the winners' prizes. Check out the site for more info.

At least it's not $100 though. I'm more comfortable parting with $10 than $100. Especially if I thought I had a good chance at winning.
Here's a free short story contest that is initiated monthyl with a creative fiction prompt by Writer's Digest....http://www.writersdigest.com/YourStory/
This month's story is due April 10th. Seems like a good way to brush up on writing skills. I might try to enter. Although I"m personally having a hard time grasping the idea/ability to write a short story. Please, if anyone has any ideas/tips techniques, please post in our How To Section.

I don't know if any of our members are from the UK or Ireland, but there is a wonderful short story contest that was started by Chick lit writer, Rowan Coleman, with a deadline of July 16, 2010. Write 1000 words with the theme of "Starting Over".
Bummer for us US residents but I thought I'd pass the word along...here is her website for deets!
