Plus, the ficus.

I tried not to have any expectations in the early days, honestly, and I don't want to jinx anything, but I think the fact TC is a collective effort plays a role. I hope people feel a sense of shared ownership. We all keep TC going. It wouldn't work any other way.
Like Jamie said, I think people are usually respectful but still comfortable enough to disagree. Not that we haven't fought, but that's the exception, not the rule. And there's also an unwritten rule that if some jackass came in and tried to ruin the place we'd rise up and kick some butt.
I also want to thank Jim for going out of his way to acknowledge new people. Posting on a board with 500+ members takes guts, and Jim esp. makes sure the new people don't get lost in the mix.
I really do appreciate, not as a moderator, but as a person who comes here to exchange ideas and have fun, all that people contribute. I consider you my friends, and I humbly thank you for letting me hang out in your presence. I mean that.
Thanks for allowing me to feel less alone in the world.

Thanks for the acknowledgement RA.
The success really does start with the moderators, then extends to each and everyone with the courteous manner in which we treat each other.

You always acknowledge new people.
You 86 people who seriously screw up the vibe.
Or a bouncer can be told by the bartender to 86 the drunken baffoon in the red shirt spilling beer all over the place.

What do you think is the reason for our success?
