When RA started this group nobody expected it to last long. Really, I'm not overstating things if I say that, right, RA? But now not only has it been around for a year and a half (nearly) but it's ballooned to a hugely massive group!

What do you think is the reason for our success?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments A great group of moderators, who keep the conversational ball rolling with fun topics, Sally.

Plus, the ficus.

Jaimie (jez476) | 664 comments Everyone here seems to be open and friendly. I never see anyone here ridicule each other, like people often do on message boards, we're all respectful. I think that's a big part of it. Also, you all seem to be of above average intelligence...even the plants!

I tried not to have any expectations in the early days, honestly, and I don't want to jinx anything, but I think the fact TC is a collective effort plays a role. I hope people feel a sense of shared ownership. We all keep TC going. It wouldn't work any other way.

Like Jamie said, I think people are usually respectful but still comfortable enough to disagree. Not that we haven't fought, but that's the exception, not the rule. And there's also an unwritten rule that if some jackass came in and tried to ruin the place we'd rise up and kick some butt.

I also want to thank Jim for going out of his way to acknowledge new people. Posting on a board with 500+ members takes guts, and Jim esp. makes sure the new people don't get lost in the mix.

I really do appreciate, not as a moderator, but as a person who comes here to exchange ideas and have fun, all that people contribute. I consider you my friends, and I humbly thank you for letting me hang out in your presence. I mean that.

Thanks for allowing me to feel less alone in the world.

Misty | 36 comments Beautiful, RA! I was a long time lurker, but that was because of lack of time. This place makes me laugh, and I've always enjoyed visiting!

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments dude, you are chestier than i thought

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for the acknowledgement RA.

The success really does start with the moderators, then extends to each and everyone with the courteous manner in which we treat each other.

message 15: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments plus most of us on here are bored out of our minds just sitting in our cells waiting for rec time or exercise in the courtyard while we study our acquittal strategy and listen to jorge our cuban cellmate sing like lena horne

message 16: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments wait...maybe that's just me...

message 17: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) We don't discuss that aspect of TC, Kevin.

message 21: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4035 comments You start topics with questions that sound like you're interested in what everyone thinks. That makes people want to post.

You always acknowledge new people.

You 86 people who seriously screw up the vibe.

Its a restaurant term.

message 24: by Félix (new)

Or a bouncer can be told by the bartender to 86 the drunken baffoon in the red shirt spilling beer all over the place.

message 26: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yup. That, too.

message 28: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13815 comments I have never heard of those before.

message 29: by janine (new)

janine | 7715 comments they are probably not 'official' codes, but something one of my gay co-workers made up to rate customers.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments if your co-worker ever see's me please do not tell me my ratings

What about a simple ↑ ?

message 41: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments how the heck do you do that?

message 42: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13815 comments I misread message 40, and thought you were talking about your greatly oversized elipsis, which sounded dirty.

message 44: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14537 comments I remembered another thing I like. I think many TCers watch patterns and make sure that, for example, someone doesn't post a couple comments and get ignored.
