Kim Crowley (kimcrow) | 1893 comments What do you do when planning?
How much do you do?
What sort of planning?
Do you even do it at all?

message 2: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 870 comments I am majorly guilty for planning. I have a dedicated book and folder made for my books. On word document, I wrote a thirty page chapter outline for Revealed.
And, I'm semi-trying the whole go-with-the-flow idea, but I don't think that it's working very well. :/

message 3: by Kim (new)

Kim Crowley (kimcrow) | 1893 comments wow
i would die from all that planning
I never really usually do much or even get the full story idea in place before i start writing and then i end up giving up about 10 chapters it :L
For Change though, ive got a notebook which is kind of like a diary for my main character where i wrote from her POV about herself and what her lifes like (suprisingly helpful), i have a notebook for random scenes that come to my head, a character profile notebook and a very rough outline of what happens in the first 6 chapters ((thats all ive got up to so far)). Its helped me to get a lot less stuck and i write quicker with it so obviously it helps :)

For my NaNo though, i did no planning what so ever and just wrote what came to me. I managed to complete NaNo but i also managed to end up with a story that loses plot near the middle before catching onto the plot again at the end
so my advise is always plan - even if its just a little!

message 4: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 870 comments Now It's Gone is working very well for me. It's a half-plan-half-flow story. I have the main ideas in my head, but there's all these little twists in there that I didn't plan. Lol.
I always writer over the weekend, because school has just started I haven't had time to write much. But planning helps me keep track of where I am in my story.

message 5: by Kim (new)

Kim Crowley (kimcrow) | 1893 comments glad its working ^^
ugh school really doesnt leave much time for writing does it?

I am very unorganized when it comes to planning. O_O I sometimes outline my books, but usually I only outline parts and not the whole thing. Right now I'm writing three books and only one of them has a complete outline. The other two outlines are … a bit of a fail. But they're coming along.

message 7: by Niki (new)

Niki | 2381 comments I do a lot of character planning, like names and histories and appearances and relationships. Not so much plot planning.

message 8: by Laura (new)

Laura (xmagical) | 405 comments Ehh. I don't plan that much. I probably should. And I never write stuff down unless it's part of the story. >.< Otherwise, I'll just have to hope I remember it. 'Cause if I write it down then I'll have a wdf? moment when I look at it later.

But I do a lot of background planning...Like history of the city/person/etc.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't plan hardly at all. I come up with the sketchiest plot outline and just go with the flow.

Niki wrote: "I do a lot of character planning, like names and histories and appearances and relationships. Not so much plot planning."

haha, I'm the opposite. I can't character plan at all. I find that characters always turn out way different than I expected, even if I try to plan for them to be a certain way.

message 11: by Ky (new)

Ky (poeticshark) | 10786 comments I just do character profiles...I really need to start planning plots..or I'll be Scre**d when I actually write seriously.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I just write down the very basics of charries.

message 28: by Sella (new)

Sella Malin | 3094 comments I'm the opposite of Niki. I plan a lot of plot, but I don't plan out characters at all. I always have outlines for my stories, but they're always really disorganized and messy. Like, they're all out of order and are just a jumble of random notes about something that's going to happen way in the future. They're just full of notes about detailed scenes that will happen, not really a full-scale outline of the span of the book. Haha. :)

FOR THE RECORD: Mallory McSkittles startedt the whole Lip Popping Noise thing on GR. She also came up with the abbreviation.

Yes she did...

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

And she hereby forbids anyone from saying Stupid Frog Noise (SFN) and 'stupid zebra(s)'.

message 35: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 870 comments Okkkkkkkayy.....

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, I have a right to SFN, but I stole 'stupid zebra' from that movie Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. I guess I technically can't forbid y'all from saying it, but I can ask nicely.

message 37: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 870 comments Bahah! Oh, I get it now. Haha. I had no idea what the heck you meant when you said that! Lol.

message 38: by Jayda (new)

Jayda | 2761 comments It depends on the book for me on how much/whether or not I plan :)

With my first book I planned a lot. I even put up chapter summaries.

With Rebel I can't plan at all. It's impossible.

message 39: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 870 comments Hey Jayda! :D

I'm having some trouble with Now It's Gone! :/ It's just... not going anywhere at the moment!!! Blah. I think it wants a vacation but I don't want one. Lol.

I am seriously glad I am not the only person who has ever done chapter summaries! My first one was thirty pages long. Lol.

I try to plan. If I want a charcter to be like German or something, I look up german names. I look up places around where they live in case I need to use one sometime. I look up cars that fit their personality. Names are what takes me the most times to find. And last names.

Hey Ellen! :D Sorry I didn't see this before!

Awww :( I hate when that happens! Try writing something else for a little bit, or writing ahead of where you are now :) Maybe that'll help?

Oh yay! I'm not alone! :D Sheesh, thirty pages long? Mine wasn't that long xD The longest I've had is around 15 pages, I think?

Lol; that's okay! I forgive you, Lol. :D

Haha. Yeah, I do that a lot; writing ahead of time in the story. Usually it's the more exciting or emotional scenes that I write ahead; I hate the boring but necessary bits that you have to write! Lol.

I know, it was horrible really. I'm not sure what I was thinking!! I went and read over it the other day; and blah, I'm surprised I even understand it (I have parts highlighted, italics, bold, and underlined everywhere it's craaaazy!) I've been planning a lot for NIG and where I want to take it and everything. Originally, NIG was a stand alone book but I can't do that unless I kill of all of my characters. And as heroic as the idea that I had in mind seemed; I just couldn't do it (It sucks getting to attached to your stories)!! Lol. So now I have a whole book and folder just specialised for my writing :/ I can be such an organised freak it's scary!!

Okay, I do that, but my plot ideas are so sketchy it's almost a miracle I can write anything.

Oh yay! I'm happy :D

Yeah. I try not to involve myself too much with boring scenes... They're just... boring xD Haha. If they bore you then they'll most likely bore the readers! I like writing out kiss scenes :3

Dang! Yeah, I would've been confused xD Haha. I only ever have italics. I rarely use bold. Oh, don't worry about it. I have a BUNCH of different folders for all different types of stuff! Folders for lyrics, folders for stories, folders for my series, folders for NaNoWriMo, folders for cheat codes, etc. All of my pictures are organized, too. OH! And my favorites tab. That's organized as well. I'm such an organized freak... But it's really only with stuff other then my personal spaces. My computer desk and room aren't THAT organized, though compared to other places... Yeah, my room is great ♥ I got attached to the first book in my series, so I branched out and planned four more books but if I publish any of it, I'll probably make it a stand-alone book. Otherwise, I'd only use the first three books.

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. But, the things is is that those parts are important for the book. It may just be a little conversation, but that has such an impact on the book, you know? And I'm not really sure on how to make it MORE exciting. I think they're boring for a reason. Lol.

Haha. For some weird reason I really love using italics :/ Yes!!!! I do that, too! I have about fifteen folders for just everything. And I always write lists for the week, or what to buy, and what to write and all of that kind of things. Ah, my bedside table is probably the least organised. Everything is just... there. Lol. My wardrobe on the other hand *sheepish grin*... is orgainsed. But freakishly so. Lol. I think I would publish a stand alone novel first, and then publish a series maybe. Because apparently its harder for a series to be published if you're a first time published author. *thinks* I probably could make it a stand alone, if I really, really wanted to. But I don't, so I probably won't. Lol. Is this your HOWL series you're talking about the first three books??

Yeah, I totally get what you mean. Well, sometimes we can also think that our boring parts are indeed boring, where as the readers (who might have no idea where the story is headed) find them informative and interesting. In my first book, though, I have all of these scenes where she's just contemplating stuff. Ugh.

I love it. But, I don't use it a lot when I'm planning on posting something, because I hate having to go through and find all of those italics in the story xD Haha. That is awesome! My closet isn't that organized... I can never hang up my clothes after I wear them :/ I just... I don't know why, but it's impossible for me! I organize my room thoroughly about three or four times a year... Yeah, I know what you mean. I doubt that I'll be writing many more series after my first one. I cannot write the last book. It's impossible for me! :/ So the series will go incomplete for some time, unfortunately :( Yeah, it is :) Actually, my sister came up with a series name: The Claws & Fangs Series. So C&F, I guess?

True, true. It's funny because I know that I have to write them, but I just can't really bring myself to write them. Lol.

Ugh. I hate it, too! Because you go through it, then you're done, and then once you clicked 'ok' you find that there are parts that you missed so you have to go through it all over again!!! Ugh. Haha. I just cleaned my room a little while ago. I didn't go towards my wardrobe though. Couldn't be bothered for that much organising today. Lol. I always find that I have so many ideas for the series, but then, when I finish that first book, I just don't want to write the rest. I think it may be because I need a break from that series, but I dunno. Ugh. I hate that!!! Why is it impossible? You just can't write it, or you don't want to write it?? Haha. That's cool. The Claws & Fans Series. I like it *show thumbs up*. My sister helped me with some ideas from Lure. Well... she didn't exactly help, but I talked to her a lot about them. She would nod her head at the right places. Lol. She's learnt quickly.

I know. I hate that :/

Haha! I know! I can't stand it! I deep cleaned my closet a few weeks ago and I deep cleaned my entire room about four months ago, I guess. I know exactly how you feel! It's impossible because I have ZERO inspiration for it. I know most of the beginning of the plot, but it would probably be a really long book, and the turns that I put in place starting in book three make it horrible to write. I killed off a main character in book three and then they come back, and it's just a total mess! I don't get confused or anything, I just don't want to write it :/ Haha, thanks! :) Hahaha. That's awesome :) My sister helps me a TON! It's so great.

LOL! You should see my coz room. There are clothes EVERYWHERE!!! Not to mention not even half of them fit in the wardrobe together :/ Ikr?? It's the like, "OK so its going to start off like this... then what??" And then I stop writing because if I force myself to write I'm not sure if it will be any good or not. Really? O_o Mehh. Characters make writing stories so damn complicated because they get into your mind and control what you write and completely surprise you!! I get stuck when it comes to my plot :/ Ikr?? Man, there are time when I could strangle my sister (not really but you get what I mean) and then there are times when I want to hug her to death!!
