Hai semua,

Sekarang, saya sendiri sedang menimbang-nimbang untuk membaca Elizabeth Kostova The Historian, tapi bimbang pula jika bercita-cita terlalu tinggi. Bimbang bila beli nanti tidak terbaca.

Apa yang menarik sangat tentang vampire sebenarnya?

Bram Stoker's Dracula = Excellent

Kostova's The Historian = Worthless!

Seriously, save your time and money and sanity. It is incredibly horrible. I went into the book thinking it was gonna be an exciting journey into the history of vampires with a bit of mystery here and there. Nope. It was just boring.

And the one plot point that made a lot of people who read that book (including me) throw it into the garbage bin? One of the characters drank a potion that gave him selective amnesia . That's right. He could remember everything except that one thing that was important to the story just to make the story longer (saja nak buat cerita, kata org Melayu).

I mean, really? Selective Amnesia?

Boring book. If you decide to read it anyway, don't blame me if you turn into a bitter old woman, living alone with a hundred cats in a small house, shunned by your husband and children. The neighbourhood kids will call you, "The crazy cat lady who read The Historian". They will laugh at you, point at you and then run away crying as you throw your cats at them.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Ulya A.K | 263 comments hmm.. i've read a few books on vampires.. some good, some absolutely hilarious.. but most of the latest ones are leaning more towards romantic/young adult genre..

Anne Rice - i've read her book a long time ago, can't remember whether it was Interview With the Vampire or The Vampire Lestat.. think it was the latter.. Really good..

Twilight series - no need to go further, right?.. hehe..

I've also read Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy, P C Cast's House of Nights..and also tried some of MaryJanice Davidson's Undead series.. Havent read Sookie Stackhouse or Vampire Diaries though.. these are the currently popular ones.. a much lighter read than Anne Rice since they are targeted for Young Adult.. they well, have an almost similar theme though.. out of the lot, i quite like the Vampire Academy series..

Why vampire? Difficult to say.. immortality, forever young/beautiful maybe?

OKlah ni Faizah, baguslah dah bertambah komuniti peminat.

Sibuk sangat menghentam The Historian, sampai lupa nak jawab soalan ni.

Rasanya itu je buku vampire yang saya baca within the last few years. My review is here, slightly spoilerish.

Setuju 200% dengan Khairul H. Lupakan saja The Historian.

Sungguh!

Aduh.. menusuk kalbu sungguh 'tamparan' En Khairul. Sekarang saya betul-betul berfikir berkali-kali untuk mendapatkan The Historian.

Saya bukannya apa. Selain nak baca tentang vampire saya tiba-tiba pula berminat nak tahu tentang Vlad the Impaler. Ini semua Discovery Channel punya pasal!

Ya. Cuma down sidenya dia hisap darah. Macam bad boy yang merempit naik motor besau tapi buaya nak mampus. Bad for you tapi nak jugak, nak jugak.

Sookie Stackhouse series tu sudah diadaptasi jadi True Blood kan. But then, come to think of it,quite a number of vampire books have been turned into tv series/movies. That's an indication of how attractive vampire is to the market.

Oh btw. Siapa pernah tengok advert cerita Melayu apemende ke namanya, Siong? Malaysia pun dah terbawa-bawa dengan gelombang vampire sekarang ni. Barangkali ini gelombang Twilight kot.

Bagaimana pula tentang intepretasi penulis tentang vampire? Adakah gender penulis pun turut memainkan peranan?

Khairul Hezry | 2357 comments Mod
Mungkin gender penulis mejadi faktor. Penulis perempuan seperti Stackhouse dan Anne Rice menulis vampire yang kompleks, tak semestinya jahat (tapi tak semestinya baik).

Tapi kalau penulis lelaki, vampire tu anak menantu setan!

Xara_fatima | 255 comments hanya pernah baca Bram Stoker punya versi (edisi alih bahasa). Baca pun masa umur 12 tahun dan ketika itu membaca buku tu sangat menakutkan sehingga saya campak buku tu bawah katil (tapi lepas tu ambil juga, sebab nak tahu apa kesudahannya).

Selebihnya hanya menonton versi tv / wayang cetak rompak

Situlah Vlad the Impaler bermastautin dan menyeksa/membunuh/memakan mangsa-mangsanya (musuh politik, tawanan perang terutamanya askar Uthmaniah, orang gaji yg tak pandai buat kerja, etc etc). Kebanyakan pelancong pergi ke Bran Castle tapi tiada bukti yg Vlad pernah duduk di situ. Tapi Poenari Castle memang sah kediaman beliau.

Poenari Castle terletak di atas puncak bukit (kena panjat 1,500 anak tangga baru sampai) dan ia dianggap salah satu tempat paling berpuaka di dunia .

Kenapa weh berpuaka? Ghosts flying around?

Biar betul!)

Tapi ye la. Tengok sejarah tempat tu memang banyak aktiviti kejahatan dair kebaikan.

You mentioned "Dracula" triggered something from my childhood memories. I remember stealing one of my father's books (Dracula was prohibited from us children as it was categorized as "bacaan dewasa"). It was the bahasa indonesia translated version and I didn't go far because I seriously doubt the fact that chocolate could kill vampires. All due to the WAFER word in the book. ( in the movie as well)

The reason behind this, being the child version of me,I thought wafer as in "chocolate wafer" when the actual wafer mentioned in the book probably refer to ammunitions? hahah.

Suddenly I feel like I want to read this book again, who know It might triggered another sweet memory, haha. And of course this time I wouldn't need to read it in a haste before 4.30 p.m when dad would be back at home from office..heheh

Back to the topic, I am no fan of Twilight but I did have few collections of Angel & Buffy The Vampire Slayers the book version. Addicted to the series when I was a teenager =)

Nurul, the wafer is the communion wafer representing the body of Christ. Maybe you have seen/heard of Christians in church drinking wine (blood of Christ) and eating the holy communion wafer (body of Christ)?

An unholy being like a vampire could be defeated or held back by something holy like a communion wafer, according to Christian thinking.

mcm sye la kan..my 2nd book read after the 1st one were a series of vampires story.tjuk die Vampire Kisses, author die ialah ellen schreiber, wktu tu, mmg bru nak cbe bce cite vmpire wpun sblum ni, movie2 psal vmpire atau dracula ni agak jalan jgk la..tpi tu time kecik2..

and it was a romance vmpire story...were published bfore twilight saga, but i bet it were even more excitement than reading the twilight saga tu.. cme yg pelik, knape buku ellen ni x ramai yg bce.. boleh pulak org pi bce cerita bella dgn edward tu.. ish3..i'm not a fan of twilight and the geng but i keep updating myself dgan movie2 die but not the novels...

one thing to say about vmpire. it had no fun tpi mybe because that i'm a fan of emo, gothic of any of the kind yg a bit related to that, looking that vmpire pun can be ctegorized to one of them, and ditmbah pulak dgan a bit romance or some hunor, so, it was fun. and somehow, this could be a way for me la to explore bhind of the story about vmpire..

No wonder that book was put at "18-tahun keatas" section in the local library at that time which us kids were forbidden to enter ( and my father borrowed it, that explained the sneaking part). What happened to the kid version of me if I actually believe that a chunk of food from the body of christ could kill vampire? nooo...

no, i never knew that.

It is supposed to be the re-enactment of the Last Supper when Christ had his last meal with his disciples before the Roman soldiers came to arrest him. Christ gave his disciples bread (his body) and told them to eat it. He gave them wine (his blood) and told them to drink it. SO they have Christ 'in' their bodies, in a manner of speaking.

Some critics have said that Christians practice cannibalism because they 'eat' and 'drink' a man!
