Fishtown-esque neighborhood in NYC

A while back a friend from Philly recommended a book, set in a NYC neighborhood similar to Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood. It takes place in the post-war era, I think. That's pretty much all I remember about his description of the book, except that it sounded very interesting.

If it helps, Fishtown was (to some extent still is) a predominantly working class Philadelphia neighborhood of European descent.
