A good example I can think of for type B. is Murder, She Wrote.

The ones that came to mind when I read your message was the Agatha Christie characters, Poirot and Ms. Marple. You've probably already heard of them, but Poirot is more of a consultant and/or sometimes he sticks his nose in and Ms. Marple is always sticking her nose in; some cops appreciate the help; some do not. I love it when she lets them think it was their idea.

@Vanessa: Yup, I know of Agatha Christie.

The TV show CASTLE is great fun - a male writer rides along with a female detective on the job.
Could you rec me any books like that? Where someone outside the force is helping the cop on a regular basis? I prefer male characters - usually no UST that way - and if there is some funny banter, you'll have my eternal gratitude :)
