Dawn (dawnv) | 4057 comments In another group there is a thread about the worst book ever and you know I think that is rather subjective just because I like something and you do not is a matter of personal opinion. However it did get me thinking about book covers. So I was wondering in the land of PNR and Urban Fantasy what book has the worst book cover but was maybe a fantastic story?

message 2: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) [image error] is a "god-awful" cover, but the story is very good!

message 3: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh is a terrible, terrible, cheesy cover. But the book is amazing!!!

message 4: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (Savhage Temptrest) (savhagetemptress) | 85 comments Gentlemen Prefer Succubi (Succubus Diaries, #1) by Jill Myles - the guy looks sooooo gross and doesn't touch the character he is meant to capture. The story was so good, cover blek!

Sarah | 766 comments I'm one of the ones who hate this cover. First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World, #1) by Jeaniene Frost
What's with his head? And the eyes? More creepy than sexy. I'm liking the story, though.

message 7: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments [image error] I dislike this one as well!! It's like a bad 80's romance cover. blech.

message 8: by new_user (new)

new_user I would have to agree with Jess that Slave to Sensation has one of the worst covers. Also, though I really enjoyed these books, they could definitely use new covers:

A Mermaid's Kiss (Daughters of Arianne, #1) by Joey W. Hill Pleasure Unbound (Demonica, #1) by Larissa Ione Teasing Danger (Futuristic Romance) by Autumn Dawn

message 9: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I'm with Sarah! I am about halfway through reading First Drop of Crimson, and loving the book, but I really hate that cover!

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 437 comments Melodie wrote: "[image error] is a "god-awful" cover, but the story is very good!"

LOL, I adore that cover. I think it's really cute and unique.

That is like 70s Charlie's Angels LOL

@ Jess yes you are correct I forgot about the terrible slave to sensation covers

message 12: by Betelgeuze (new)

Betelgeuze | 158 comments I dislike this: [image error] cover.

The absolute worst cover i've ever seen: Blood Is Thicker Than Water (The Reilly Vampire Chronicles, Book One) by Wynette A. Hoffman

I agree!!! The other Night Huntress covers are so beautiful, but I guess for the spin off series they are introducing a new format. The guys head looks like its hanging off his body. His hands look gross and his torso makes him look abnormally long.

message 15: by Shannon (new)

Shannon C. Jess wrote: "[image error] I dislike this one as well!! It's like a bad 80's romance cover. blech."

The first few covers for this series were cheesy, but at least the books were good! I wish they'd redo the covers and re-release them, considering the books are so popular.

This cover looks like Japanese anime to me, which is something I detest. Makes me wonder what it was that prompted me to pick it up in the first place!

I don't mind this cover so much. The head is at a weird angle, but the guy is actually pretty good looking, I think. I wasn't crazy about the first Night Huntress cover. The book had been out for over a year, the second was even out, before I bought it. I thought the cover on the first one was cheesy, so I wouldn't buy it until I kept hearing how good the story was.

message 18: by Dan (new)

Dan | 5 comments I hate this cover! The Gathering Storm (Wheel of Time, #12; A Memory of Light, #1) by Robert Jordan The art is awful. You would think they would have hired a much better cover artist. But once you get past the cover the book is awesome!!!

message 19: by Tina (new)

Tina | 39 comments Melodie - I agree! I see a lot of people raving about the cover. I thought it was originally a tween novel and wasn't going to give it a second thought. I really don't like that cover.

I'm not a fan of First Drop of Crimson What happened? I love the Night Huntress covers.

I have a big problem with this coverSilent Night, Haunted Night Silent Night, Haunted Night (Nicki Styx, #4) by Terri Garey Who is this? I think it's Nicki's boyfriend Joe. If you read these books you know Nicki and Evan would not let him out of the house looking like that. (The early 90's male stripper in his dress outfit!!!) UGH!!

message 21: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) Strange Candy

I didn't like the cover. It might have been okay on something else, but it looks kind of bondagish and the stories were all cute little things. it just didn't fit.

Yes that is a really bad cover! That is SO not what Joe looks like!

I don't like any of these new computer generated covers. If they are going to use CG art, then they should really use NEW CG art, not stuff that looks like it could have been in a game 10 years ago.

message 24: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (funlovinlady) | 113 comments If you go to the site "Bitten By Books" and read some of the reviews. You will not believe some of the covers. It makes you think, "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?"

I just saw this cover Change of Heart by Mary Calmes
O.K. is that a picture of two girls, two guys, or a girl and a guy......

message 25: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I believe that's two guys.

Yeah, have to agree, this cover does not a thing for me. Love Frost's books, but not this cover.

message 27: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. This one I hate The Amazing Tales of Wildcat Arrows. He looks like a guy who lived around the corner from me who had a bitchin' Duster. The Amazing Tales of Wildcat Arrows by Dara Joy

message 28: by Christie (new)

Christie (cibarra) I saw this one on a blog earlier today. Maybe not the worst but it made me laugh.

Spank Me Twice by Jude Mason Spank Me Twice

message 29: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. The book cover and the title are funny.

Jess | 3721 comments Christie wrote: "I saw this one on a blog earlier today. Maybe not the worst but it made me laugh.

LOL! That's ones just too funny. I know some covers that always kind of make me giggle are the old 80's covers with Fabio on the cover. I don't know why.. they just seem so tacky.

message 31: by Nita (new)

Nita (gillnit) I really do not like this cover - A Rush of Wings (The Maker's Song, #1) by Adrian Phoenix . I really enjoyed the book and would have read it sooner with a much better cover, I think. Plus the main character looks nothing like that women on the cover.

message 32: by Melodie (new)

That one is bad. Took me forever to get to this book mostly because of the cover.

I agree. I bought it because I wanted to see what was so good about this book (many of my Goodreads friends loved it) but the cover screamed "I'm a sleazy book written by a perv" - I thought it was written by a man! Adrian is a male name, right? So I misunderstood, if I did so could others.

message 34: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 766 comments I read awhile back on Adrian Phoenix's Yahoo Group that she tried to get her publisher/marketing crew to change the covers, but the publisher won't agree. Phoenix wants to put a man and woman on the cover that match the Dante and Heather characters more closely, but her publisher says that men on UF covers don't sell books. Women (preferably sexy and leather-clad) on the covers sell books.

I don't agree with that.

message 35: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments hmm.. as I think about it, a lot of UF books do have a singular female on the cover. PNR books usually have couples. I wouldn't say that one sells more than another though

So true!
Except Larissa Ione, Demonica series....well excluding the first one LOL. I wonder if that is because of the male pov??

message 37: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments Oh I have those on the kindle, so I don't remember what the covers look like. But maybe it was because of POV. I mean lets look at some popular authors. Frost is UF and her's only have Cat on the cover. Briggs, only has Mercy on it. hmm what else can I think of at the moment. Kittredge's Luna series only has Luna on the cover as well.

hmm interesting. I guess those marketing people do have SOME sort of idea when they put covers together.

message 38: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 766 comments Kittredge's Black London has a couple on the cover. Street Magic (Black London, #1) by Caitlin Kittredge

Now that you mention this cover I have to say it's a strange one to me. The woman's cheap wig is bad. The man reminds me of the meatheads that do security in the bar's and nightclubs I've worked at. I can't stand this guy. He will definitely punch a innocent person in face for no reason other than he's bored.

Touche! I forgot about this one.

message 41: by Kenna (new)

Kenna (kennas) You know, I love Kim Harrison, shes on my favorite of all time list, but I HATE her Dead Witch Walkingcover. Whats up with the shoulders being so huge and the arms being so small and short? That shade of hair color is just terrible as well...but from the shoulderblades down, I love it. I want a set of those charms and If I could fit my fat heiny in those pants... yeah baby. Id own a pair.

message 42: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 62 comments Derik's Bane (Berkley Sensation) by MaryJanice Davidson

I resisted buying this book for a long time because of the cover, but loved the story once I read it.

message 43: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Is that a bathroom scale? a refrigerator drawer?

message 44: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 62 comments Carolyn F. wrote: "Is that a bathroom scale? a refrigerator drawer?"

If you are asking about Derik's Bane, it is a redhead and a werewolf in a convertible. I still cringe when I see the cover.

Dawn (dawnv) | 4057 comments Re: Magic Bites...I so agree it was very off putting. When I read the book I got a much better visual picture.
