Not sure if ts relevant but Im about to read The War of the Worlds by H.G.Wells for the first time! And will follow that up with Edison's Conquest of Mars by Garrett Putnamm Serviss (1898) which is said to be the sequel to Wells's work.

Finally getting round to Childhood's End! I planned to read it on his birthday but due to coming down with a flu I took longer than expected to finish the book I was reading at the time! Anyway I've started re reading it today-I read it years ago but dont remember much about it (a jungle scene at night sticks in my mind for some reason!) and I'm not sure if I 'got it' at the time.

Which civil war? I don't recall ever reading anything he wrote on that topic or hearing about that topic in his writing. I think he touches on the Sri Lankan civil wars in The Last Theorem though.
