I've never really gotten on with Foundation. I've read the original 'trilogy' but most Asimov bores me!

It's like he's showing off by espousing stuff he KNOWS ordinary people won't be able to tell is bull! No other author I can think of wrote like that! However, his "Last Question" had to be one of the MOST impressive short stories I've ever read....(I also saw a planetarium show about it! EXCELLENTLY done!)
The Last Voyage of the Cassiopeia
Well I just find stuff like Foundation dull, political SF isn't for me. I like his robot stories and books and the novel End of Eternity is a good one. To think I used to have a shelf full of Asimov, many first editions!

Larry wrote: "I have The Gods Themselves to read soon. Will get round to it one day..."I GOTTA hear what you think about it after reading just the first chapter....;-)
And so onto 2010:Odyssey 2, which I've read almost as many times as 2001!Funny but when I read it I see Roy Schieder as Floyd,(RIP Mr. Scheider!) with Helen Mirren as the russian engineer!

That makes sense...at least the Roy Schieder part, though he will always be Captain Nathan Bridger to me. :-)

Oh, I loved it. What is twee? You should give it a try some time. The first 2 seasons are on DVD. It is like Star Trek under the sea.

When did you watch it?
When did you watch it?
Warched it when it was originally on TV,years ago. It was OK but nothing to write home about. Probably watch it now tho, certainly than rather than Firefly!

This was his attempt to revive "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" with a "ST:TNG" cast...
Bland and nowhere as most of his crap is/was....
Larry wrote: "Oh I didn't realise it was a Spielberg job! I tend to like his stuff"OOOOOH!! Cooties!! Get 'em off of me!! Get 'em off of me!!
(As you an see, I am NOT a Spielberg fan....!)

E.T. lose lunch!

E. T. isn't one of my favorites, but it's okay, especially for children.

Larry wrote: "I've never seen ET and don't intend to! Poltergeist tho is a different matter!""Poltergeist" was directed by Joe Dante, yes...? NOT Spielbucks....!
Ever see "Young Sherlock Holmes"? Now... did you see "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"....?Same movie. And what's infuriating about "YSH" is that the kids who played Holmes and Watson were the spit and image of Siskel and Ebert....I kid you not! If you don't believe me, rent it!
Ok, but Close Encounter s of the Third Kind was, and I bet you wish had some of his bucks!(I know I do!)
Larry wrote: "Ok, but Close Encounter s of the Third Kind was, and I bet you wish had some of his bucks!(I know I do!)""Close Encounters" SUCKED!!! And I will always, until final entropy, take Francois Truffaut (or his ghost) to task for ruining his reputation by taking a bit part in it, thereby legitimizing that piece of drivel MUCH more than it deserved to be!
Truffaut could direct FIGURE EIGHTS around Spielberg...why he would want to waste his reputation and prestige by being in the most venal director alive's little "Star Wars" wannabe, I don't know. All I know is that I was grossly disappointed by what he did and never went out of my way to see his movies again after that! I was a huge fan before!
Yeah....and you know what (and forgive me for being ghoulish,) but Truffaut died of a brain tumor, something that could have EASILY affected his judgement!Seriously....
Jason "plasborgma" wrote: "Stephen wrote: "Why?"Is that a rhetorical question?"
What do you mean? No, it's not. I'd really like to know WHY you enjoyed that empty, Star-Wars-slipstreaming offense to the intellect....!
Why, indeed!
CEoTtK is NOT a star wars knock off- its miles away from the concept of SW-the 2 are like chalk and cheese!
Larry wrote: "CEoTtK is NOT a star wars knock off- its miles away from the concept of SW-the 2 are like chalk and cheese!"I didn't mean that it was COPYING Star Wars, but that it was a piece of sci-fi (like) swill exploiting the public's hunger for science fiction movies after New Hope opened the way for it! Spielberg has made this a career pattern....: Star Wars - Close Encounters; ESB - Raiders and 1941; Jedi - E.T., Gremlins, Poltergeist; Phantom Menace - A.I.; AOTC - Minority Report; ROTS - War of the Worlds... whenever Lucas comes out with a SW episode, you can set your watch by how fast Spielberg will release one of his lame attempts to cash in on the sci-fi wave that always creates.

I enjoyed the premise most of all: a benevolent alien civilization visiting Earth, letting humanity know it is not alone in the universe. I also really enjoyed the mystery and the excitement building up to the climax of communication with the ship and the interaction with the E. T.s. It's a movie full of wonder, whimsy, and hope.

I STILL say it sucked and I STILL say to hell with it! (g)

That's fine; to each his/her own. I was just answering your question, not trying to change your opinion. What does "(g)" mean?

Him, dude...HIM!! And (g) means "grin", as in, "kidding", (though I AM serious about hating Spielberg!!). It's the predecessor to "lol"....

I wasn't trying to correct you, I simply didn't know what you were talking about. I now assume you are referring to my statement "to each his/her own." I wrote "his/her," because I wanted to be inclusive of both sexes, not because I thought your sex was ambiguous. Lighten up, Steve. :-P

Again, I'm puzzled. Does this indicate that you are wanting to use expletives that are directed at me?

This is getting silly and counter productive. So we like different films, big deal! I thought the book Dune was awful and preferred the film but that's just me- I don't harp on about it!
