First, cogratulation Paige, upon having your first book published. That in itself, is quite an accomplishment! I would love to be one of your friends. My name is Germaine Chevarie and I have self published 2 books. The first "The Bequest" three years ago and "Drawn to the Light" last year. Both are available at Amazon.com if you want to take a peek at them. Good luck in your future writings!!

Glenn Starkey (glennstarkey) | 8 comments Hi, my name is Glenn Starkey and I've been a Goodreads reader/author for several months. Just now learning to navigate through my "dashboard" and make proper entries. I've published 3 novels to date ( https://www.Amazon.com/author/glennst... ) and have another coming out by end of year. I hope to be more involved with this group, learn from others, and am always open to help anyone wherever I can. Thanks.

Leonore | 1 comments Vincent wrote: "Please introduce yourself! Do you write books? Do you just enjoy reading them?

Let us know a little bit more about who you are:"

My name is Leonore. I mostly read, and I have done a great deal of professional writing about criminology and psychology. I was prematurely retired from my job recently and, because of the additional time, have begun doing some non-professional writing. I am writing every day to get in the habit but it is like pulling teeth. I have difficulty with reconciling the amount of information in my brain with the amount I can write in any one sitting. I am hoping to learn how others approach the process of creative writing.

message 2306: by Mark (new)

Mark Mortensen Hello. With a business degree I never expected to write a book, but I was encouraged and challenged by a prominent historian along with my wife the true writer with a degree from UNC Chapel Hill School of Journalism. Many folks wait until retirement to follow their heart and pursue interests, however life is short and in the economy, who knows when retirement may come? It is possible to maintain a professional career and write on the side. I was captivated by the entire process.

It was my profound honor and privilege to write the biography titled: “George W. Hamilton, USMC: America’s Greatest World War I Hero”. Many in the Marine Corps consider Major Hamilton to be one of the “Top 10” toughest Marines to ever wear the uniform. I consider Hamilton to also be our nation’s most forgotten hero.

Stephen Pearl (stephenp11) | 272 comments Hi Leonore,
I hope you take this in the spirit in which it’s meant. I am a writer with 4 novels soon to be 5 to my credit. I'll list them below so you can see my resumay. The trick to trimming info is this. Ask yourself how much your audience will need to know to follow the story then tell them that much when they need to know it and trust them to remember it. In Tinker’s Plague I thought out the background of how the three political areas are structured and how they interact economically. I hardly touch on it because it doesn’t drive the plot, but I know it so the items that grow out of it remain consistent.
One of the best tricks to creative writing anyone can learn is how to read your work like a reader. Turn off the author / creator and look at it with fresh eyes. One recommendation was to just write the book put it aside for six months to a year then come to it like a reader. Be prepared to carve out huge amounts but this can work.
Hope this helps.

Stephen.

Sterling Gate Books (sterlinggatebooks) | 37 comments Hi there - Great to e-meet you!

I’m one half of a New Zealand father-and-son writing/publishing team here at Sterling Gate Books.

My son James Morcan and I have co-authored two new release novels which have already appeared on Amazon’s bestseller lists in their respective categories.

One of these, an international thriller titled The Ninth Orphan, recently held the #1 ranking for one full week. In December, it was at #3 on Amazon’s ‘Movers & Shakers’ site for the biggest gainers for all books in its Kindle Store in the previous 24hrs.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0056I4FKC

Our second book, a historical adventure-romance titled Fiji: A Novel, is already outselling our first book in some weeks, which bodes well.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0057YCZM0/

We are delighted that both books are receiving predominantly 5-star reviews. We are pro-actively seeking more reviews for both books, and that’s one reason we joined this group. That and to exchange views with like-minded people.

Best from NZ

Ada Adams (ada_adams) I really like this group! Thank you for creating it.

I am a Canadian author with a passion for writing and reading. I am one of those "a book a day" readers. Once I begin, I cannot stop until I have have finished the entire book. :)

However, when I write, for some weird reason I can't read other things during that particular period of time.

My debut novel, "ReVamped", was released in February 2012.

Best regards,
Ada

Stephen Pearl (stephenp11) | 272 comments Hi Ada, I'm just curious do you attend any of the SF cons. They are a great place to meet the core fan base for speculative fiction and you can do a lot of networking with other authors and some publishers. There are several in Toronto the ones I generally attend are Ad Astra, Polaris, and SFContario there are others in TO as well. A couple of others are ConBravo in Burlington and Con-g in Guelph. I’m from Hamilton Ontario myself and have been going to the cons since Tinker’s Plague came out. If you look over the panels and pick your cons and plan your time they can be worth while. Also a lot of them will give you a discount if you go in as a professional panellist which also is a good chance to showcase yourself to the audience.Stephen B. Pearl

Thank you kindly for taking the time to offer your suggestions! I am definitely going to do further research and look into attending some SF cons. One of my writer friends frequents them often, and they are certainly a great place to network.

Thanks again,

Regina Shelley (reginas) | 135 comments Hi, I'm Gina. I've been writing a weekly western genre "soap opera" every week for a couple years. Was just doing it for fun, discipline, and because I just need to write or I'll explode. Had no plans for trying to publish it at the time.

So now I'm sitting on this huge epic toe stubber and the husband wants to try and e-publish it. (Might as well, I guess). It's all up there for free right now, and that's fine. Plan to add extra chapters and extra artwork and whatnot. We'll see how it goes.

Larry Matthews (larrymatthews) | 2 comments Hello. I'm Larry Matthews, author and former broadcast journalist. My fourth book, Saving Charles, is due for release in July and is a sequel to last year's Healing Charles. The books chronicle the life of a man who is born with an extraordinary gift. In his youth he has little interest in it and in middle age he has managed to squander it. He's a man who has allowed the tiller of his life to go untended.
I'm currently working on a series of thrillers, the first of which is Butterfly Knife, tentatively set for release early next year. These are the Dave Haggard thrillers, about a big-city radio reporter who finds himself in the middle of all sorts of nasty things. More at www.larrymatthews.net.

carol (carocaro) | 16 comments Hello, I'm Carol Powney, by choice, an avid reader who writes reviews of stories read as honestly and objectively as a subjective reader can.
I retired from teaching after twenty years of teaching English language and literature...and following major surgery which prevents my return to that career path. However, as one door closes another usually opens and over the past four years I've been editing and proofreading, initially non fiction. A lucky break gave me the opportunity to edit a novel and by word of mouth and satisfied customers I've now set up my stall as an editor and proofreader full time; plus have two other good freelance editors on my books.
I can be contacted at www.carocaroediting.co.uk Fully aware of the differences between US & UK languages I work to the authors specified audience.

I'm currently very concerned at the attempt by Paypal and other associated companies who are censoring authors and readers by withholding their payments, according to
certain topic areas that are legal but Paypal have designated as no go areas. This means
that some authors will no longer be able to write, publish and sell their work or chosen genres through Smashwords and other book companies. I feel this censorship by companies when the author's writing is legal and within their countries judicial law is a
very dangerous and slippery slope akin to banning free speech. This disregards the right
of the individual to choose and read material that is their personal preference and their right, even if the subject material isn't too everyone's choice or preference.
As such I have signed the current petition to show my anger at Paypal's illegal stance. If you wish to know more please contact me at my website, and of course through my profile page on Goodreads...alternately this link will give you further information,

Борис Кан (boriskhan) | 2 comments Greetings everyone, my name is Boris and I've been hooked into reading since early childhood - heavily into adventure, fantasy and science fiction, but not exclusively. Started writing thirteen years ago, although most of that was a hobby and learning experience, which I invested all into my first fantasy novel. I started working on it about two years ago and now I am writing the third part (out of six). The original is actually in Bulgarian, my birth language, but recently I started translating it to English, for now mainly to hear the sound of it and to test how it is accepted by a wider audience. I will post some snippets here in Goodreads soon. :o)

Looking forward into reading other authors works and sharing some experience. Cheers!

April R (AprilPerkins) | 14 comments My name is April Perkins. I published my first novel in August, and I might add, it is the first novel I have ever written. I've only had one author review, and one editorial review. Everyone(of the few) who have read the novel has enjoyed it. It's name is Eulogy of the Centurion and is about the curse life of the soldier that speared Christ.

The synopsis: Have you ever considered what your life would be like without a soul? Would you even feel alive? The subconscious version of the mind would revert to the remaining survival instinct. When a young farm boy finds love unexpectedly, he does his best to protect her; a twist of tragedy entraps his life force as his body remains, blackmailed into service for his Oriana’s salvation.
Violent ends begin the cursed afterlife of the centurion who thrusts the final blow into Jesus Christ. The Archangel Gabriel becomes the ongoing catalyst as he creates events that bring about Armageddon. Fallen angels attempt to flout the missions of the Army of God. Raised on roman myths, the centurion's knowledge emphatically alters as he is thrown into a world he never knew existed. Over time, the soulless leader begins to lose himself inside an indestructible body that is no longer his own. Eulogy of the Centurion is the ongoing sermon of an immortal that ironically feels no longer alive and the commemoration of the losses he experiences.

Available on Ebook, Amazon and Barnes & Nobles online only unfortunately.

I'm saying hi and introducing myself.
I write historical fiction, sometimes including a mystery. I have four novels out now in paperback (online stores) and kindle (Amazon KDP Select; I won't be renewing that and will reopen Nook in April).

The latest in a four-book cycle set in Egypt (written out of sequence) is due to come out in about six months. I should, in fact, be editing it right now, but took a break. The first three set in Egypt are historical mysteries; the current one is not. I have another two-fer, set in Paris, that is getting ready to go, as well.

Cindy Rush | 8 comments Hi, I'm Cindy Rush. I have recently self-published Broken Road, and held a GoodReads giveaway a couple of months ago.
I've been an avid reader since the day I sat on the front porch and all the words in Dick and Jane begin to click. My mom took us to the public library often; wish I could have a list of all the books I've checked out through the years.
My favorite reads are British detective novels, but I enjoy any good mystery. I read mainly for enjoyment, but have been known to read to "learn" something as well.
It took my husband about 15 years to convince me to give writing a novel a try, and it was the most incredible experience. My frustration now is how to get people to read it.

Cindy, you are not alone. Every little fish author I know is searching for the thing that will gane them readership. Good fortune and just remember the little fish have to be friends. We could gobbvle each other up and it would never make much difrence to our sales. We need to gang up and take a bite out of the big sharks like Stephen King. By the way I don't have anything against Mr. King by all reports he's a nice guy but gods for one percent of his market share.

As a South African, I am proud of my heritage and even though my book takes a stab at the local political situation, I hope it will also show readers the great beauty and awesome people that my country has to offer.

For any one interested, the book is called "True Power" and it is on sale on Amazon.

Regards and thanks for starting this cool group for like minded writers and readers!

Although I have been on Goodreads for a while, I am only just finding my way around the amazing numbers of forums here.

Having always loved books I was amazed to find myself ending up working with authors and I am privileged to now represent Will Hadcroft and David Elham. Being involved from the start to the finish is an amazing experience. And whether reading a manuscript or a published book, I still approach it as a reader. Okay, the in between stages you become an editor or critic but nothing comes close to reading it as a book for the first time.

I look forward to joining in some of the discussions here.
