Stephen Pearl (stephenp11) | 272 comments Hi Anna, never let a list of publisheing credits intimidate you. I've read stuff by best selling authors that personally I wouldn't use to paper the bird cage. The tripod of sucsess has three legs. Skill, Luck, Tallent. Anyone of them can hold you back and you can't do much about Luck.

Hi Stephen,
You are right. Best selling authors and luck, sometimes, are a sort of inscrutable enigmas.

Tracey Smith | 107 comments Question to my fellow authors. I have two published books, currently working on my third and final installment for this romantic series. I have been playing with the idea of expanding into a different genre for my next project. A friend has approached me with a very interesting true story based on their personal experience. They have expressed a desire to have their story written, but not being a writer themselves have no idea where to begin. I think this story would make a very interesting "based on a true story" novel. So now to my question, how much percentage do I split with this person providing the story? They are in no position to pay me a flat fee and vice versa. Splitting royalties would be the only viable approach for us each to make money on this project, but what is a fair split. It's their story, but I'll be the one doing the writing. Any thoughts?

Steve Merrick (stevesevilempire) | 20 comments Hi I'm Steve!!!

If it's any help I spent many years nursing a very quiet hobby of writing science fiction. Listen because I was very shy about my writing, and working as an illiterate photo journalist (LOL) (also known as stevesevilempire (seriously check it on google) Well I did the pictures and kept my mouth shut about those words I scribbled away in private. So without a lot of confidence I wrote some appallingly atrocious yet imaginative words, that will never ever see the light of day.

UNTIL!

I wrote a short story called Tumor Man,(Its available in the Magic Laptop ride, a free e-book compilation of shorts and articles.) it was when I finished this one story that everything changed in the way that I wrote and structured the stories. it resulted in a small streak of pretty good sci fi one pagers and the stories started getting bigger and BIGGER until they exploded everywhere and made a real mess of my living room! My hobby was getting out of control, it got even better/Worse because the story of Kego O'Grady wouldnt leave me alone until it was finished and its now my first book called The Navigator. (Available via smashwords.com) Which would be well and good but its all part of a series called AWASH IN STARLIGHT and at the moment I am working on part two and three together.

All these stories keep coming and I can't not write them down.

Anyway all the hard work and very bad writing that was the practice has finally paid off, because the stories are exactly what I want them to be....

Strangely I have to ask you all if writing is an addiction, and if so shouldnt we set up a Writers Anonymous group therapy thread on good reads........

Welcome to my world!
:-)
Steve

Writing addict!

Barry James (mondragoran) | 18 comments Hi, everyone. I'm Barry, and I'm an author. Now I feel like I'm at an AA meeeting. :) Not that I've been to any. Not that there's anything wrong with that... never mind.

I finally self-published my book, "Dreams of Darkness," on Kindle, because I kept getting rejections from agents on the very specific ground that, although it was a good story, it was too long (160K words +) to be marketable. My wife, a vicious editor, had already cut it down from over 200K words, so there was not much more to be done in the way of editing. It was suggested that I divide it into two books, but the natural dividing point plot-wise was unfortunately not in the exact center of the book.

So it's only been published for less than 48 hours. So far I have 10 sales and 2 reviews, which I suppose is not terrible.

I'm concerned that I committed a major faux pas on my first day here. As part of the process of adding my book to the Goodreads library, I was asked to give it a rating. I gave it 4 stars, which to me means "I liked this book but I don't expect anyone to save it for their grandkids," and of course I said I was the author. But from searching the forums it seems that there were only two acceptable options: (1) skip the review step (never occurred to me), or (2) rate it 5 stars so as not to seem like you don't have faith in your own work. Oh well.

message 2258: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 107 comments Hey Barry u can always edit your rating to 5 stars if you want to. Just click on edit my review. How are you promoting/marketing your book to have already received 10 sales?

Barry James (mondragoran) | 18 comments Tracey wrote: "Hey Barry u can always edit your rating to 5 stars if you want to. Just click on edit my review. How are you promoting/marketing your book to have already received 10 sales?"

But really it's a 4-star book, so I don't want to change the rating. :)

Promotion/marketing thus far:
1. Making sure I had a good cover, professional formatting and editing, and a reasonable price ($3.99) before publishing.
2. Creating a Facebook page for the book.
3. Sending a Facebook post to my friends, which I doubt did much, but some of them "shared" the post to other circles of friends.
4. Creating a Facebook ad using a $25 coupon, which has thus far resulted in only 5 "clicks," for which I have spent $3.60 of the free credit.
5. Asking the people who read the pre-publication version to write reviews on Amazon (2 did).
6. Asking 3 bloggers to write reviews (1 response so far--she said she would get to it in 6 months which is fine with me).

I think that's it.

Tracey Smith | 107 comments Did you link your Facebook ad directly to Amazon? I ran a Facebook ad for my Facebook fan page and now have 129 likes but that doesn't translate into sales necessarily. I've thought about running another ad that would link directly to my author page on Amazon if you can even do that.

Yes, I linked it directly to the book's page on Amazon. You just have to pick "external URL" instead of "Page" as the destination.

Hi, I dabble in writing. I have a self-published book out about dating, relationships and finding love for the over 40s. It's called Next Time Lucky:Lessons of a Matchmaker. Yes, I once was a matchmaker in Ireland until I came to the USA.It's currently actually free to read on Amazon for Prime Members which all of you are here, I suppose. The book got excellent reviews on Amazon and is available as an eBook and as a paperback. Same witty content: the conundrum of a divorced woman who looks for a relationship while trying to keep her independence. Sounds familiar? I'd love to get some feedback on it here. I blog a lot about love and relationships on my blogspot:www.Nexttimelucky.blogspot.com. Recently I created a new blog for authors and writers as well as new bloggers to see their piece in print on the internet. We had over 2,500 hits in a little over 2 months. Maybe you'd like to contribute too?www.writersgettogether.blogspot.com.If it's allowed I'd also like you about my experiences with Home Swapping that I summed up in an eBook called Intrepid Homeswapping: Insider Secrets to Successful Hoe Swaps, also on Amzon. I wish to connect with my readers here and other writers for feedback and exchange of experiences. I can't read as much as I like anymore. The plight of the indie author who has to do her own PR day in day out. Happy reading! Siggy the former matchmaker www.Nexttimelucky.com

Thomas Lawson (thomasjlawson) | 9 comments Hi, I'm the Goodreads author of Letters from an Atheist Nation: Godless Voices of America in 1903. It's non-fiction and my first book. The Library of Congress has hundreds of newspapers digitized for on-line viewing, so in December of 2010 I was reading copies of the Blue Grass Blade, a Prohibition rag edited by an atheist in Kentucky, where I found a treasure trove of letters from average Americans from coast to coast explaining their atheism and/or rejection of religion in the spring of 1903. It's like reading love letters to humanity.

I like a lot of different genres, but I'm partial to science fiction and non-fiction. I am not a scholar, I'm a stay-at-home dad, yet for some reason I thought I could write a book of historical non-fiction. I might be in over my head, but you be the judge.

I have AP English Literature and IB English classes, both for 12th graders, and I also teach at St. Leo University. I recently published a fantasy novel, Task Force: Gaea - Finding Balance, currently available at Amazon and bn.com (NOOK).

Reading and writing are my vices -- I'd easily be in "literary rehab" if it existed, I'm sure. My chosen genre is fantasy, but I read just about anything. My most current reads are Hunger Games and Night Circus.

May your muse inspires you to do great things.

Scott Bury (scottbury) | 10 comments I've been a writer, journalist and editor for close to 30 years now, but I just recently taken the plunge and published my first novel.

The Bones of the Earth is a genre-crossing story set in eastern Europe and the Eastern Roman Empire in the 6th century. It incorporates history, mythology and fantasy, but ultimately it's the story of a young man who has to deal with loss, love, betrayal and his own disabilities - all while finding his own place in a complex world.

Oh, yeah: he discovers the Christians are wrong.

I'd love a review!

Jim Chaseley (jimchaseley) | 21 comments Hello everybody!

I've been a self-published author for nearly two weeks now. It's been very exciting and a lot of fun, but, I've hit a slump today. Not a lot seems to be happening, just when things have been growing and building steadily for the last few days. Heck, I even had my first refunded sale! (It came at the exact same time as a sale though, so I'm hoping someone one-click purchased it by mistake! :) )

Oh well, mustn't grumble. That's just a sign I need to push on and get the word out to more places!

I'm joining this group as a reader and as a writer.

As a reader, I'm looking for something to rival one of my favourite Sci-Fi characters: Richard Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs.

As a writer, I'd like people to take my debut novel, Z14, for a spin. It's a tongue-in-cheek, light-hearted and humorous sci-fi story about a cyborg. It's picked up some nice Amazon reviews, so far, and I'm pleased and excited for its future!
