Hi Susan, I'm glad to meet you. If you ever have any books on nook, I want to read you. I'm always looking for fresh new authors to read. I write Judith McCain thrillers and just finished my 5th but not published yet. I have a suspense, a self-help, and a fantasy, 3037. All are on amazon, Barnes and Nobel and Smashwords for $0.99 except 3037 which is on KDP (and doing nothing on there, I might add).

Congratulations on your book, and keep writting!

I have no idea if I'm on nook. I think I changed it to "reader sets price" but I also don't think Barnes and Noble does that but it is on Smashwords.

Mary E. Martin (authormaryemartin) | 14 comments Hi...my name is Mary E. Martin. After practising law for many years in Toronto, I began to write the novels in The Osgoode Trilogy, Conduct in Question, Final Paradox and A Trial of One. My law practice was a great inspiration for this trilogy and in fact the protagonist throughout is Harry Jenkins who was modeled on my law partner. I call them legal suspense.

After publishing those novels, I needed a break from the world of the law and so, I created a new protagonist, Alexander Wainwright, Britain's finest landscape painter for The Trilogy of Remembrance. Two novels in that trilogy have been published, The Drawing Lesson and The Fate of Pryde. I guess you'd call them literary fiction, although they might just be mystery because what could be greater than the mystery of art and life?

Currently, I'm beginning to begin the writing of the third novel in that trilogy.

Indie is short for independent. They are independent of the big publishing houses. Or indie films which are independent of the large production companies.

Thanks! I love how you incorporated a female operative, many writers go straight for the male character, especially in an action role. Check out Nikita, a female spy show that is really good.

My series is titled The Impenetrable Spy. It follows operative Zack Carter, a CIA agent that has created time travel, and uses it to propel himself back to life after being killed. He is "impenetrable" and cannot be killed, unless his time travel machine (small and hooked to his chest) is destroyed first. I published the first and have written the second, which is currently in edits. I am writing the third book, which is a unique spin off prequel for another character in my series.

Hints of Dr. Who in your work - am I right? :)

Yes, I went for the female operative, expressly because everyone goes for the male spy. Angelina Jolie's characters in Salt and Wanted were big inspirations, as was Nikita (though that show totally fizzled out on the last ep of Season 1 *but I digress*). Another inspiration was the other show starring Peta Wilson, La Femme Nikita. In fact, most of the reviewers who've read the book have compared it to that show, with shades of Bourne Identity thrown in because of the amnesia plotline.

I'm a big fan of strong, tough action heroines who still are women at the heart of them, and that's what I wanted to push here. :)

Shelley | 5 comments Good Morning All,

My name is Shelley, yes I was named after the poet and have always wondered what my Mother was thinking to do so, especially since her favorite poet was Rudyard Kipling. Now I think Kipling would have been a much more original name....but, as usual I digress.

I have no pretense of becoming an author since I am a contentedly dedicated reader. I read daily and am always scouting something to read.

message 2225: by Marla (new)

Marla (mocassa) | 5 comments Hi! I'm still finding my way around here and keep getting pulled into reading different threads. So, since I'm a lurker, I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Marla, I'm fairly new to Goodreads as a reader and I've been stalking this group partly because I'm also a writer. I have self-published one narrative nonfiction book and would describe myself as an enthusiastic writer but a reluctant publisher/promoter, perhaps because of my book's topic. So, on Goodreads, I feel tugged between my reading interests and my rational thought process that I should be "promoting" myself and my book.

Ah, well. . .

So, much of what I'm doing here these days is new to me and I feel like I'm fumbling a lot. Evidently, if I had done everything "right" (as an author/publisher), I would have aggressively established a place for myself here a year ago.

Ah well. . .

So, I'm not good at formal strategies for baring my soul. But one of the nice things about this place is that it seems to be informal so, if nothing else, perhaps I can laugh at myself here. Thanks for creating the open environment you have and for the opportunity to join this group.

I look forward to getting to know you,
Marla

Hello Sharon,

I respect writers who come from the heart, that's the only way I know and anyone that doesn't write in that method is wasting daylight.

If you have a PDF of Seeing the Liberty I wouldn't mind seeing it. Do you consider yourself 'done,' or do you think it needs editing? I understand completely from my own experience, that 'flow' possesses you and you're uncertain about changing anything -- but you know it can always be improved. At least, I know MINE always can :)

Anyways, I hope you are doing well. If you look at my books you will see where I am at.

Peace,
P

Stephen Pearl (stephenp11) | 272 comments Hi Zee, Skimming the posts I noticed your liking for female protagonists. Check out the show Lost Girl, Boe is a succubus PI / Spy Operative for the Fay who form a covert society amongst human who they view somewhat as cattle. She is an interesting character though I think the series would read better if you start at the beginning. On another note, my novel Tinker's Plague has an interesting covert element. I don't want to give it away but a careful reader is going to see what I mean.

Hello Marla,
You're not alone! Writers are rarely enthusiastic about diving into the necessary work called "self-promotion". We receive far too much information and advice, thrown about by opportunists who rely on us to sign up for their free webinars. Too often, those are ploys that waste our precious time to sell their own products/programs (books, DVDs, or a series of online seminars) that guarantee instant success.

While it's exciting to be an author during the greatest publishing revolution in world history, it's also a wide-open field of confusion. We're all feeling our way through this maze, and it's nice to find others of "like kind" here on Goodreads. Tell us more about your nonfiction narrative.

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 59 comments Hello and welcome, all newcomers.

Marla, I read the preview and added - No Comfort Zone: Notes on Living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to my TBR shelf. It seems a compelling and informative book about a little-known subject - and especially so because you're writing from personal experience. I think you're incredibly courageous.

Marcia Noren (marciaquinnnoren) | 50 comments Nell, thank you for adding Marla's link and I too, have added it to my TBR shelf! You see, Marla...this is how the Law of Attraction works! I am currently reading Nell's "Solitary Pleasures" and even bought a Kindle Fire, just to gain access to it!

Yes Nell,
Since we're a global community, I realized that I must own a Kindle (in addition to my Color Nook) in order to access books instantly rather than waiting for them to be shipped across the pond.

I wish that I had proofed the Kindle version of my own book on the Fire, rather than taking the publisher's word for it that "it is perfectly formatted." (No...it is not; the first letter of each chapter hangs by itself, hovering over the paragraph.) Did you read my book on a Kindle and if so, did you notice that? If so, did it bother or irritate you? (sigh)

message 2238: by Nell (new)

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 59 comments Marcia, I did read on Kindle and noticed the hovering first letter, but realized that it was a formatting problem and thought that the only way to correct it would probably be to make it conform to the standard size of font. I didn't find it annoying - just wondered why it hadn't been altered. That seems to be the trouble with all these different formats, and why I stay with Kindle for my books rather than format for all the others too.

message 2239: by Nell (new)

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 59 comments Hello Luke, welcome to the group.

Re. the vanishing novels, there has been a recent change from Amazon to other sources for book information, and some books and/or their covers have disappeared. It is possible to add your own books manually and upload covers etc. - I'll try to find the link with the information.

Thanks for letting me know, Nell. eBooks2go (Gantec Publishing Solutions Inc) formatted the eBook in Epub3, and each time I proofed it, there were new errors in the format that were not in my original MS! It was an ongoing nightmare to finally get it right, and the end result was still not perfect. Then, I paid extra to have it formatted for the Kindle Fire. Of course I should have purchased the Fire before giving them the go-ahead and writing the check!
