Chris Hughes | 1 comments Hi everyone,

My name is Chris Hughes and I released my novel "Meld" at the beginning of December on Amazon.

Meld: A tense technothriller science fiction novel about mind transfer, moral choices, and mayhem.

The most interesting/rewarding thing has been the almost visceral reaction people have had to the moral dilemma it poses. People seem to take it personally and wonder about what they would do if faced with this situation.

As an an author this feels like the best reaction you can get! I wrote it as an entertaining sci-fi technothriller but many readers have looked into the ethics and morality more deeply and I find that kind of cool. One woman told me that she can't kill snails in her driveway but if her son got cancer, then she'd be tempted. As a doctor and seeing patients faced with their own mortality, I wonder what any of us would be prepared to do if faced with this situation.

Love to know people's thoughts or start a discussion.

Cheers
Chris

Mattia Lorenzo Zonno (mattiazonnoauthor) | 9 comments Greetings, fellow book enthusiasts!

I'm Mattia, a 28-year-old translator with a passion for weaving tales that resonate with the complexities of life.

Welcome to my world of "Kindred Warriors," an urban fantasy/crime/action and adventure novel pulsating with elements of romance.

At its core, my novel is more than a narrative; it's a heartfelt journey through the realms of love, loss, bullying, brotherhood, and the delicate dance between justice and revenge.

What makes this story truly special to me is that it features not only my vivid imagination but also the people closest to me—my girlfriend, friends, and even our canine companions.

This tale is deeply personal, a dedication to those I cherish the most. Their presence in the storyline reflects the profound bonds we share, creating a narrative that mirrors our collective experiences and infusing them into a fictional town plagued by modern slavery.

Beyond personal fulfillment, my writing journey carries a larger mission:
With a trilogy of books on the horizon, I aim to shed light on the challenges faced in Italy, Naples, where exploitation and oppression are prevalent.

This project is not just a series of novels; it's a call to action, a plea for awareness, and a commitment to making a positive impact.
Through "Kindred Warriors," I invite you to embark on an adventure that goes beyond the pages of a book.
Join me in bringing attention to real-world issues and standing against injustice.

Let's be real kindred warriors, united through the power of storytelling and a shared mission for change.

Thank you for being part of this journey. I look forward to sharing more stories and making a difference together.

Myrah (kittykitty4life) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Amyrah! I am a twenty-year-old English student at UC Berkeley who wants to write and publish my first book by the end of this year. :) I like writing about characters who are disabled like me, and how they navigate a world that's all too often not made with them in mind. I'm a little obsessed with science fiction and anything that evokes the works of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams.

Hope everyone has an amazing 2024! Thanks for having me!

• space exploration (politics, ethics) and rockets (technology, propulsion)

Thank you for the recommendation! I haven't but I'll look into it.

On stoicism, so far I've read Seneca's "Moral Letters to Lucilius" and Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations", and I'm in the middle of Epictetus' "Discourses, Fragments, Handbook."

What about your interests?

message 21313: by [deleted user] (new)

You're onto the key Stoics there Mel. Ryan takes their learnings and devotes a page to each insight in the book - there are 366 entries where he takes the quote from Marcus A or whoever and interprets it in the modern era. It's great to just dip into it each day.
My interests are pretty varied too: I do like history and have a fascination with space travel too. Otherwise it's music, reading, meditation, yoga, the Stoics of course, woodturning (my main hobby in retirement), the beach (especially what the tide throws up - shells, driftwood etc), surfing (curtailed for the moment because of health issues) - and my writing. I have lots of projects waiting for my attention in that area, including a scifi novel about a space traveller. Just love writing.

Ann Birdgenaw (annbirdgenaw) | 36 comments Hi everyone. Happy New Year!

I'm Ann and I have a great scifi series to read with your child or for your middle grade reader. It's titled Black Hole Radio!
It's the BOTQ here on GR. This is bk 1 but there are 4 so far in the series to enjoy as stand-alones.
3 Friends are sucked through an old transistor radio to other planets where they face many issues that they are already facing at their own school. being different, bullying, child enslavement and racism to name a few. This, of course, is done with humor and adventure. The friends all have their differences that they are trying to deal with: Hawk(named after Stephen Hawking) is smart and into space, Matt is bi-racial and into space and Celeste is on the spectrum (aspergers) and into space. they don't fit in at school and are ignored or bullied. this changes as they learn how to deal with bullies and hard situations on other planets. They even get special powers (ESP and telekinesis) which helps to deal with bullies and win at basketball.

Check out this series for a fun escape with your children, and introduce them to the scifi genre.

Jules Larimore (jules_larimore) | 1 comments Hi everyone! I am foremost a reader and researcher of all things historical, with a special interest in ancestral history, which is quite diverse so it navigates me to many places. I am also an author writing novels based on my ancestors' stories which, for now, are focused in southern France, in the area known as Occitanie, (formerly Languedoc), London, and Colonial Virginia and tell the story of Huguenot refugees fleeing persecutions in France. The Muse of Freedom: a Cévenoles Sagas novel
Most of my reading is tied to whatever I am writing at the time so I can immerse myself in the related era and setting. I am currently reading books set 12th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Next stop, 7th c. Merovingian France. As part of an author's collective called France's Splendid Centuries, I will be presenting at the Historical Novel Society UK Conference in Devon, England in Sept 2024. The conference might be of interest to some of you with its other great presenters such as Diana Gabaldon, Bernard Cornwell, Kate Quinn, and more. I cannot think of a better way to spend vacation! In Devon and all things historical fiction!

I want my stories to reflect the socio-economic complexities of the times the characters live in with some sympathy for them. Liam Kent | 3 comments Hello and Happy New Year! I have been through my fair share of sadness, but was also fortunate for having an education allowing me to be aware of the anger and confusion as it crept in. I feel deeply, have a personal history of trauma, and as cliche as it sounds, I believe you have to feel to heal. I learned so many things about myself, emotional sensitivity, self-awareness, and resilience through my tragedies. So much so, that I felt compelled to write a creative non-fiction memoir (Novella) as a blueprint to help others. If you've been knocked down my pain but refuse to let it drain your present or are confused on how to move forward during or after trauma, you're not alone. I've learned first hand when your present is too precious, remain positive, grow, and tap your Invisible Awareness.

Greg Morgoglione (gregmorgoglione) | 17 comments Vincent wrote: "Please introduce yourself! Do you write books? Do you just enjoy reading them?

Greetings all,

Greg Allen Morgoglione here. I'm an avid audiobook fan of mysteries, thrillers, memoirs, and humor mostly. Currently listening to a Joe Pickett novel from C.J. Box and making my way at a casual pace thru a paperback copy of REM - Perfect Circle by Tony Fletcher. (I'm a huge REM fan.) I'm a singer-songwriter and Director of the Accessible Music Project non-profit that I founded. (We've had support from REM! Billy Joel and Dolly Parton too!)

When I began to ease away from corporate America and into the world of music in the mid-90's, I was asked by a co-worker to include her mom and aunt and their friends in my performance schedule. Her mom and aunt couldn't come to shows at traditional venues, since they lived in a skilled nursing facility, so I took my music to them. In spite of the musical generation gap between us, we hit it off quite well. I turned them on to REM. I got away with KISS covers. They began requesting "the one about the pirate" when they wanted to hear Jimmy Buffett's " A Pirate Looks at Forty". It was cool - arguably cooler sometimes than traditional small venue shows.

I began sharing my music at more assisted living and nursing communities around town, and one day a local businessman offered to sponsor my Songs for Seniors concert series. I took him up on his offer, because frankly I couldn't understand why doctors and nurses and all sorts of healthcare professionals are well paid in these communities, but musicians are expected to volunteer. "What's up with that?" I wondered. “Everyone knows that music is therapeutic. Music heals.”

Thus began a decades-long journey to help musicians evolve their perspective on bringing music to the Access Limited - to see the demographic not as a volunteer obligation, but rather as the professional opportunity that they represent at such an important time.

Play Something Pretty That You Like to Play reaches out to musicians across America to "be the change that they sing of seeing". To paraphrase a classic John Prine song that's quoted in the book, Play Something Pretty That You Like to Play calls America's musicians to go sing Hello In There as the professionals that they are!

Thanks for the chance to introduce myself.

Cheers!

Read about my 50 years of attending 676 college games in my fun and unique adventure, Fifty Years of Tailgate Tales: The Good, the Fun and the Ugly. Among all these games, I've attended games played by all 132 (three new ones to be added soon) Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs. It's not a story dwelling on game action and statistics. This book entertains and intertwines the tales of this life-long passion through the course of everyday life including marriage, a growing family, friends old and new, and over a successful, corporate career in business. The adventure continues through what should be a happy retirement.

Mark Alsip | 6 comments Hello everyone. My name is Mark Alsip. I've previously co-authored a book ("The Fear Babe", a tome on scientific skepticism), but my upcoming release, "Journey to Reason," is my first solo effort. The idea for the book was born while writing an article for the National Center for Science Education on the conflicts between science and a fundamentalist, science-denying sect known as young earth creationism.

As a former young earth creationist, indoctrinated at the age of 6, I explore the conflicts that arise when a logical, science-loving child is confronted with an unyielding demand that science must be denied when it conflicts with fundamentalist teachings. Unfortunately, children such as myself were threatened with eternal punishment for believing in science, and this practice continues today courtesy of such organizations as Answers in Genesis, owners of the infamous "Ark Encounter" and "Creation Museum" in my home state of Kentucky.

The book is full of relevant tie-ins to the great rifts currently affecting society in the USA, linking topics such as vaccine denial, laws affecting women's reproductive health, climate change denial, book bans, history revisionism, etc., firmly back to fundamental, evangelical teachings.

The book is not anti-religion, but it does take on science and history denial in a straightforward manner; the intent being to encourage support for public education, and to deliver a strong, relevant warning to those who might be wrongly ignoring things such as book bans as "simple things we shouldn't be concerned with."

I'd love to link up with like minded authors, editors, potential advance reviewers... anyone interested in (and/or worried about) the topics mentioned here.

Journey to Reason is currently with my editor; galley copies should be available for review in mid-February, with the tentative release being mid-March.
