Benjamin (BenPatrickSomething) | 1 comments Hello everyone,

My passion since youth has been to write screenplays and produce movies. I have done some of each and am currently working on a Western Series. Yes... I did say Western. It's about time for one of those.
Over the past few years I have developed a new passion. Books! Good Books! I love to read! Never thought an English loathing southern boy would love to read.
Currently I am working on a Series of 5 books(much respect to those of you who have accomplished this), as well as 3 individual books based in the same settings as the series. I am snooping around this group to gather up any crumbs that may fall from the table, and hope to find a few "yet to be illuminated" good reads in the process.
Thank you Vincent for creating this wonderful avenue.

S (stormdream) | 3 comments Hi all,
I'm new to Goodreads in general and am trying to figure this whole group thing out, so bear with me. (It figures--I keep seeing Goodreads links on my friends' Facebook pages, but never really investigated.) I'm a freelance copy editor by day and a writer by night. I love sci-fi, fantasy, horror, historical...pretty much any genre, really, and I have a special fondness for zombies. I belonged to a reading group at my previous job, and I miss chatting about good books!

I self-published a long sci-fi novella; there isn't much of a print market left for that length, so I made it my experiment. I'm happy with the story and how it ended up looking, but marketing is something I still haven't figured out. Still, for once I feel like I'm on the cutting edge of something. ;)

Nice to meet you all!

Lynette Sofras (manicscribbler) | 5 comments Hello,
I'm Lyn and am still trying to navigate my way through the Goodreads high seas. I’m a former teacher (I was head of English in a large London school) and gave this up a couple of years ago in order to retain some of my sanity and focus on my writing – which is my lifelong dream.

Almost immediately, I found myself plunged into the diverse waters of freelance writing and editing, which left me no time at all to pursue that dream of mine. However I’m pleased to say I have now self-published my first novella – a contemporary romance ‘The Apple Tree’ and am working on several other ideas.

The one closest to my heart (contemporary women’s fiction with a strong supernatural twist) is now virtually ready for querying, but as I’ve said before, I’m rather like an over-protective mother on the day her first-born starts school – standing at the school gates, tearfully reluctant to let it go quite just yet. I will get help soon, I promise!

As one brand newbie to another, I know exactly what you mean about marketing. If you are not bold and pushy, you get nowhere in the self-publishing world, it seems.
I'm picking up a few tips from more experienced writers as I go along, but it's not easy. If I learn any real trade secrets, I'll let you know.
Meanwhile, hello and nice to meet you too :)

F.T. (ftmckinstry) Hello everyone! My name is Faith, and I'm relatively new to Goodreads. I love books, forests, winter, cats, fishes, computers and fairy tales. I live in the northwoods, don't get out much and have one foot in the otherworld. I grew up an avid reader of fantasy, science fiction and the esoteric. I hit the ground looking for answers.

I recently released my first novel, The Hunter's Rede, a swords and sorcery tale, first in a series. It's a character-intensive story of an assassin who was raised by a wizard. He is good at what he does. But a deep-rooted rift between sword and mage turns his life upside down and puts him face to face with the forces of his own nature. It's a tale of integration with an underlying theme of spiritual paradox.

I've also published short stories, and have a love for oil painting and illustration. You can check out my work here: ftmckinstry.com. Thanks for listening. :)

S (stormdream) | 3 comments Lyn wrote: I know exactly what you mean about marketing. If you are not bold and pushy, you get nowhere in the self-publishing world, it seems.

So very true, Lyn! I am not an aggressive marketer at all (you'd think I'd have learned something from freelancing, but I got by on word of mouth for the most part), and putting myself out there is just...terrifying. I don't want to be overbearing. I'm sure there's a happy medium somewhere, but I've yet to find it.

And don't worry about being an overprotective mother. It's darn hard sending them out into the world, no matter how ready we think we are!

Hello, Books2Review, D.d. and Faith! I'm glad I'm not the only complete newbie here.

Joanne (wwwgoodreadscomjoanneweck) | 4 comments I began thinking of myself as an author when I wrote my first poem at age nine and won a school prize. Since then I've always written--poems, plays, short stories, essays, novels. (My mystery CRIMSON ICE is a Goodreads book available from Amazon as a paperback or Kindle.) My short stories have won some contests and been published in literary magazines. My plays have been performed in theaters throughout my state and my YA novel is being promoted by my agent at this very moment. (Crossing my fingers that she finds a great publisher.) I taught Creative Writing and sponsored YAWT (Young Artists Workshop Theater) for teens, and I'm trying to share what I've learned through my website and blog. Joanneweck.com. Cheers and kudos to all of us writers and readers alike.

message 1734: by Robert (new)

Robert Thornhill | 26 comments Two years ago, I was a sixty-six year old retired realtor living on 70 acres in the woods with my wife, Peg.
We were both avid readers and had just been turned on to Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series by a friend. We laughed till we cried.
After reading Fearless Fourteen, I was inspired to give it a try myself. I had never written anything of substance, tweeted or blogged, but I sat down at my computer, pretended that I was Janet and wrote three chapters using her characters and my own plot.
If you would like to read those three chapters, go to my website, http://www.BooksByBob.com. and click on the 'Stephanie Plum' tab.
I gave the chapters to Peg. She loved them and promptly told me that Janet didn't need my help and that I should write my own story with my own characters,
So I did, and Lady Justice Takes A C.R.A.P. City Retiree Action Patrol was born.
Although written in the same mystery/comedy style as the Stephanie Plum series, all my characters are senior citizens.
The main character in my Lady Justice series is Walter Williams, a sixty-five year old retiree who decides he wants to be a cop.
I self-published this first novel with Authorhouse and the response I received from my readers was so encouraging that I wrote the sequel, Lady Justice And The Lost Tapes.
By this time, I had discovered the limitations of self-publishing and submitted both novels to several large publishers. Tate Publishing liked what I had written and picked up both novels.
Since then, I have written four more novels in the Lady Justice series, Lady Justice Gets Lei’d, Lady Justice And The Avenging Angels, Lady Justice And The Sting and Lady Justice And Dr. Death.
I thought I was through writing for awhile, but my eight-year old grandson came home from his second grade class with the assignment to write a book. He, of course, had to share the news with his author grandfather.
After all was said and done, my wife threw down the gauntlet and told me I should write a kid's book. After all, I was just a big kid myself.
I wrote the first of the Rainbow Road series of children's chapter books, Super Secrets Of Rainbow Road. My grandson loved it and encouraged me to write more.
By the time it was over I had written seven books in the Rainbow Road series of chapter books for children ages five through ten.
In the past two years, I have had over 40 book signing events, promoting the Lady Justice and Rainbow Road books.
At each event, at least one person approached me and told me that they had always wanted to write a book. How did I get started? Is it hard to write? How did you get published?
I know that the story is different for everyone, but I was asked so many times, I thought it might be helpful to tell my story, so I put together Tears and Triumphs of a New Author.
It is my story of how a sixty-six year old guy who had never written, wrote and published twelve books in a year and a half.
Information on all of my books, reviews and videos are available on my website, http://www.BooksByBob.com.

David Fleming (davidwallacefleming) The thing I like most about being an author is the long and interesting journey it provides. I’ve been actively pursuing publication for ten years. Of course, that doesn’t count the high school and college courses.

My first publication came in college with an op-ed piece for the Iowa State Daily. From there I began submitting to magazines and attending conferences in Indianapolis and New York City. I became an active member in the online critique forum at Zoetrope.com and eventually helped to moderate a face-to-face group in Austin. From the Austin affiliation, I was directed to the magazine in which my first short story appeared. Soon after, I placed a science fiction short story in an anthology collection.

After a few near misses with partial and full submissions to agents, the Kindle user-base exploded and I decided to put my debut novel, Growing up Wired , on Amazon.

I'm not sure if I did this already (the mind fades as it circles 40) so, if so, please forgive.

if not, I'd like to draw your attention to my books; there are several listed here (still trying to work out making them available for sale. Circling 40, remember?)

At any rate, I'm here. If you like urban fantasy in the. Butcher or Whedon vane, you might want to stop by my Grim Arcana series of novellas. They're sort of the gateway drug for the rest of my stuff.

The Price of Salt
The Cost of Opening
Fixing Mr. Styx

Don't worry about reading them in order.

And I'm also, for this month only (BECAUSE IT'S OCTOBEREEN!!), giving away a new short, THRENODY, on Smashwords, absolutely free.

Greg Curtis | 91 comments Hi all,

I'm Greg (and if this double posts my apologies - I just wrote a comment and the thing simply said there was a problem).

I'm a budding author with six works out on the Amazon kindle, all science fiction and fantasy, which is strangely enough, also what I read. I have three books about wizards, two of them traditional epic fantasy, Maverick and Of Dark Elves and Dragons, and the third an urban fantasy - Wizard at Law which is a novella and I hope the beginning of a series. I also have a science fiction novel out - Dragon (which I know sounds like fantasy as well but isn't - I just couldn't help myself when it came to naming the ship!)

Outside of that I'm proud to be a kiwi, especially after the All Blacks just won the Rugby World Cup for the second time on the weekend. (It's been a long drought between wins). I work in public health to pay the bills, and play far toomany RPG's.

Like most other authors, I'm avidly looking for readers and reviewers (and an agent too wouldn't go amiss), and even if you don't read my books any comments about book covers and blurbs etc would also be gratefully received.

Cheers, Greg.

Barbara Reed (goodreadscombarbarareed) | 10 comments Along the lines that Anna and Paul have started, let me add that here in L.A. there are dozens (maybe hundreds!) of seminars, classes, and groups that are supposed to help you with writing and marketing your script, and also adapt a book to script format. But the biggest hurdle is always getting that ever-illusive agent who will get them to the production companies. Just as with book pubs, no one takes unsolicited material. Not sure what any of us can do about that--even if we have studied, edited, and truly produced a fine piece of work. The advent of indie products has opened the door for us though, and the rest seems to be up to us. I certainly haven't mastered the "how-to" of it all, yet I'm excited that I'm able to have my book series out there. And of course there's always the dream that somehow it will become wildly successful!

I also love reading other people's books. My favourite authors are Lesley Pearse and Sarah Walters, but my all-time favourite book is Jane Eyre.
