Paul F. | 55 comments I review novels for Readers' Favorite Reviews, and what I have discovered is that self-published books vary widely in quality. Some are okay, quite good, while others are absolutely despicable. Some publishers will publish anything sent to them, now matter how poorly written, as long as they are paid enough money. I mean, there are "authors" (I use that word loosely) out there who, for example, don't know where to put quotation marks, don't know where to put a comma, have run-on sentences, run-on paragraphs, run-on character viewpoints, character clutter when they can't make up their mind who their main character(s) is/are, misspelled words galore, and character names that seem to be based on unconscious, subliminal suggestion. I once read a novel with a character who was a knight, named Sir Roger Clement. This character was probably named, subconsciously, subliminally, after Roger Clemens, the former baseball pitcher. These are fine points, but they separate "authors" who are rank amateurs from the real authors.

Gail Meath (goodreadscomgail_meath) Ugh, Paul. My parents were from Poland and forced us to learn English to a "T" (pun). Nothing aggravates me more than sloppy grammar. We, authors, do appreciate your efforts as difficult as it is at times. (P.S. I'm a HUGE Roger Clemens fan, but only when he played for my Yanks:))

I read books by both traditionally published and self published authors, and have noticed that, unfortunately, the quality thing - while admittedly more common in self published books, due to lack of anyone to stop someone from hitting that publish button too soon - is sometimes an issue in traditionally published books these days as well. Even more unfortunately, the fact it's most common in self published books means all those people give the rest of us a bad name, and make many readers reluctant to take a chance on what might be a fantastic good quality book, just because it was self published.

I started writing short stories when I was about 7, then I started to take writing seriously when I started my first historical novel 2 years ago.
My publishing began right after I had an accident at sea a little over 6 months ago.
Right now, I've published one personal growth/self-improvement book and a historical novella.
I plan on releasing a wide range of historical novels and novellas in the years to come!

To me, it's all about reviving history and adding some intrigue and twists and turns onto the story, then share it to the world.
I created exotic-reads.com to host all my self-publishing, while at the same time, I created exotic-flavor.com to cater to other historical novelists' historical illustration needs.

Official Review: More Letters from the Pit

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "More Letters from the Pit" by Dr. Patrick J. Crocker.]

Dr. Patrick J. Crocker (Crocker to his colleagues), retired emergency physician, wrote More Letters from the Pit: Stories of a Physician’s Odyssey in Emergency Medicine as a sequel to his Letters from the Pit. Following the conversational style of the first book, Dr. Crocker formatted his stories as letters to Jack, his “great college friend.” There were 40 “Dear Jack” letters in the book, but none were actually sent. I am curious to know what Jack has to say about the letters. Maybe a later edition of the book could feature a “Dear Crocker” for Jack’s reactions.

The stories in the letters usually revolve around particular incidents in the emergency room. The patients and their complaints are identified (though the patients are rarely named), and Dr. Crocker discusses the intricate process of arriving at a diagnosis. We then watch the medical team as they administer life-saving interventions. A few stories transpire out of the hospital: One happens on the street where a fallen Austin 10K runner is attended to. Another is on a cruise ship; the retired Dr. Crocker takes charge after the ship’s medical personnel falter in their efforts to revive a collapsed man. We witness victorious saves, but there are also horrific failures.

While all the stories are about the ravages brought about by illness, we find welcome humor, too. The author cleverly describes a violent patient as similar to King Kong but who unfortunately does not mistake Crocker for Jessica Lange. The reader also discovers the amusing side benefits of Vicks VapoRub.

Each story ends with lessons learned from the exhausting exercise: “Medicine is a team sport.” A doctor should not be quick to judge an ailment as “benign.” Not everyone can be saved.

The preface gives the reader the right orientation in facing the book, and the epilogue wraps everything up satisfactorily. The book ends with a poem about a miraculous recovery. That save clearly made a lasting mark on Dr. Crocker. I will remember that story, too.

The book will be appreciated by emergency medicine practitioners and health personnel, for the stories will certainly be familiar to them. However, even laypeople will be able to enjoy the book because Dr. Crocker defines most of the medical jargon. The reader will experience the adrenaline boost of one gloved and gowned for action in the pit, the emergency room. The squeamish ones who fear gore, needles, and death may not be the right audience for this book.

I would have given a perfect rating for this riveting book if there had been fewer grammatical flaws. Nonetheless, I am sure that the author will be able to doctor the errors to perfection very easily. Until then, I will have to give the book 3 out of 4 stars.

The present global situation underscores the significant role that health workers play in the preservation of the human race. This book will open our eyes to the challenges that they grapple with every day, even without a pandemic. Let us thank them for the work they do, the risks they take, and the sleep they forgo to keep us well.

Eleanor Deckert | 8 comments Hello from the mountains of British Columbia, Canada.
I grew up in Colorado. Every year, the third grade teacher read aloud "Little House in the Big Woods."
So, right then, I decided when I was 8 years old that someday I would write my own story like Laura Ingalls Wilder... every day happenings...
I didn't really think much would change since 1965... we already had cars and telephones and television.
My family moved to Florida, then Ontario.
I met my future husband when I was 16.
My Hubby and I decided, at age 21, to leave the city and find a place to build a log cabin. We called it "Back-to-the-land" in the 1970s.
Yes!
That first winter, however, was bitterly cold and our uninsulated cabin, cracks in the floor boards, heating with a cook stove, cutting wood by hand... it was miserable... but definitely something to write about!
How to begin?
How to make my way through the maze of editing, publishing, marketing??? I live 7 hours drive from a major city? How can I manage these business transactions?
In January, 2014, I realized: "My mother will be 80 years old soon. I will write this books for her!"
So, I did.
I wrote all day every Sunday.
I focused on my "target audience."
As my book was nearing completion, I wondered, "Could I write more than one book?"
I grabbed a pen and rapidly outlined "10 Days..." for every month!
So!
That is my intro... You have 5 titles (in 4 volumes) to read so far.
I am typing as fast as I can to finish the rest!
Let me know what you think?

Paul F. | 55 comments Hello authors and readers: Is anybody out there besides me getting tired and fed up with trying to read what they thought would be an exciting novel but which had almost no action or interesting dialogue until the second half of the book or even not until the last few chapters? Too often I've had to saw my way through miles of boring stuff to get to something exciting. Example: the hero of the story meets the heroine of the story ten or twelve chapters in. The first dozen or so chapters were all about the hero's birth, youth, and growing-up problems--none of which I care about and which were unnecessary gobbledygook that could easily have been dispensed with, without damaging the actual story (when it finally starts) at all. Authors--take note. I am an author myself (with a blog on Goodreads) and I try to have some action right from the start. Paul F. Murray

L.C. Reig (lcreig) | 3 comments Hi! I'm Lau and totally new to this whole marketing strategy process. My love is of writing, but to get books "out there" so that other people can enjoy the story has me feeling a bit overwhelmed. My genre is Gritty Science Fantasy....

For Paul.. I AGREE that books should start with inciting incidents to get the reader enganged as early as possible. I had a friend that asked this of me for my book and I am very happy I followed the advice. It was fun to spice it up with more action even though it is a series. Guess that's the art of making things interesting.

In general, I like books that are focused not just on the story but the development of the characters, and using the imagination to make the impossible, plausible.

K.R. Fraser (krfraser) | 21 comments Hello fellow authors and readers,
I am very happy and blessed to finally be here. My first novel was published a year ago this month, but because of a serious injury and infection in my heart, I spent most of 2019 fighting for my life. As a result, I was unable to continue with any of my marketing or platform building. So, I am essentially starting over. I look forward to meeting both readers and fellow authors alike and am open to discussions on all topics concerning writing and publishing. I love reading in my spare time and enjoy several genres.

I invite readers to check out my work and hope you find it an exciting addition to your collections. On a side-note, it is presently only in print, but will be coming to ebooks this fall.
