From Beethoven and Me: A Beginner's Guide to Classical Music
Earl Ofari Hutchinson
"A Handel and Jimi Hendrix Jam Session"
"The thought of a Jimi Hendrix and George Frederick Handel jam session sounds absolutely ridiculous, right? But not so fast. Many Londoners and music aficionados have long known that for two years from 1968 until his death in 1970, Hendrix lived in the flat on London's Brook Street right next to the flat Handel lived in two centuries earlier. Today, the two flats are joined together. It's named the Handel House Museum. It draws thousands of visitors every year.
Now for a time, it was assumed that a big name rocker like Hendrix didn't know or care to know about a guy who composed music a time and a world apart from him. We now know better. Hendrix snatched up a bunch of Handel recordings, including Messiah. But that wasn't all. A few listeners claim that they hear a riff or two from Handel in some of the guitar work of the later Hendrix recordings. This might be a stretch. But being a long time Hendrix music junkie myself, I'll take that stretch."
