Chris This novel described a neighborhood a lot like the ones I grew up in. At a reading, I tried to ask Lethem to talk more about how the book portrays race relations and his views on the topic. He totally refused to go there in public. Does anybody here have anything to say about it?

James E. Martin I think it's really complexly expressed. Notice that Dylan and Mingus are best friends and they're different races. The overall race situation in the neighborhood is horrible and Dylan was routinely victimized. But those bullies were in themselves victims in the story. I think it mirrors the complex racial situation in the US.
