Dazrin | 10 comments It looks like the "first published" date for "Sixty Stories" by Donald Barthelme is incorrect. Everything I can find shows that it was first published in 1981 (9/14/1981 per Amazon.com which closely lines up with some review dates). Some of the stories in it were published as early as 1964 in The New Yorker or elsewhere but the collection itself wasn't.

Empress (the_empress) Additionally I don't see any edition on Worldcat that have been published before 1981.

Change done.

What is the latest date any of the individual stories was published? Because that is the date we would use for first published for a collection.

Edit: Looks like 1979. Edited.

Edit: It looks like several of the stories were originally published in this work, so I think the 1981 date should stand. The Wiki bibliography lists at least 4 stories without earlier publication dates and a couple with earlier publication dates in the 1980s.

See "The Emerald", "The Farewell", "Heroes", and "Bishop" for previously unpublished stories; "Thailand" and "The Emperor" for stories published in the 1980s.

Original comment below, leaving just in case someone has already read this:
Not sure where you found the 1979 date, can you provide a link for my education? I can see that 1979 was the publication date of the most recent collection he pulled from to make this new collection but not that all the stories were published by that date. From the review below it says that 9 of the stories were "never collected before" which sounds like they might have been new for this collection. I could be wrong but want to make sure everything is as accurate as possible. Seems to me that the 1981 is the date that this collection was published and should be used. If it was a listing for an individual story I can see using the original publication date.

Thank you!

Thanks for finding proof of that. I agree, that does seem to be the case.
