I read a science fiction series 2 or 3 years ago that I am trying to find again. There were different groups of humans, specifically some that genetically engineered themselves to be super intelligent. That group had a particularly "bad" female character that had an attachment in the skull that radiated out waste heat due to the augmentations. That group gets banned/leaves the galaxy and then some machines show up that are consuming planets. The main character is also female and the last book ends with her contemplating if the "bad group" somehow went to a different level of the brane universe and unleashed the world eating machines.
