The first book talks about how English, an old Germanic language, evolved into our modern language through the years (heavily influenced by Welsh and Celtic).
The second book is historical fiction about one of a Germanic clan of hangmen, where the hangman solves a series of murders with the assistance of his daughter and a village physician. The author is German and the copy I read was translated from German.
