Matt Marino | 8 comments I loved this book, as did my students who read it last year and this year. We had so many in-depth discussions and started with the characterization of Mariam, looking at her relationships with her parents and how they shape her throughout the rest of the book.

I read this year's ago & was struck by her resilience.

Matt Marino | 8 comments The first sentence of the book sets a pretty bleak tone for Mariam. The fact that she (according to her mother) is a bastard child suggests that her life will be a struggle for identity, since her father (Jalil) clearly wants nothing to do with Mariam, no matter what he says or does, and Nana (her mother) makes her feel guilty for wanting to forge her own path in life, even if that means a life without Nana. We see that search for identity throughout the course of the book.

What do others think about the identity idea with respect to Mariam and Laila?
