Final thoughts

Laurie I finished this today, and it was fairly different than I thought it would be. I didn't expect it to be such a stinging commentary on the Chinese exploitation of the Mongolian grasslands due to the population explosion and the subsequent need for meat to feed that population. It broke my heart to read about the environmental disaster due to killing the Mongolian wolves which set up a serious ecological imbalance. The main character, Chen, was heart-broken to see the disaster unfolding before his eyes, and it comes across beautifully in the novel. A powerful story and something I don't think I would have ever picked up if this group hadn't chosen it.

The one gripe I have is the extreme intelligence attributed to the wolves. While I'm sure they were smart, they seemed to almost surpass human intelligence at times and that's pretty hard to swallow. But possibly millennia of instinct does look like intelligence when viewed against human stupidity in destroying the grasslands.
