Jacob Flores My thanks to Lynn for inviting me to join this group. I'm new to Goodreads, so I'm stumbling my way around here. What I've found through my missteps so far has been wonderful. I'm a recently self published author. My genre is gay fiction, which I enjoy to read and write. I also enjoy a good horror book as well. I'm also an English professor and look forward to the many discussions I see here.

J.H. Sked (jhsked) | 1 comments Thanks to Rick for the invites. I'm still feeling my way around Goodreads and tend to fight with tech, so apologies in advance if I do strange things while posting! I have two books out - an epic fantasy called WolfSong (magic, revenge, people with sharp pointy weapons) and a short story collection of urban fantasy and horror called Basement Blues. My reading taste tends towards horror, fantasy, urban, crime - pretty much anything that has a good story.

Hi. I have a soft spot for (and a poor imitation of) James Mason, so I accepted Rick's invite with much thanks.* I write suspense full-time and have three books out with novels on the way.

Reading, writing and coffee are my addictions but there's no hope or rehab for that. After working in publishing as an editor, publicist and sales rep for various book companies, I finally founded Ex Parte Press. I love edgy and humorous fiction. Favorites include Vonnegut, Palahniuk, early McInerney, late Atwood, Hemingway's short stories (not the novels) and my Jedi master is William Goldman (the most underrated novelist, possibly ever. Don't believe? Read The Color of Light if you can find it.) I'm Canadian, but I'm not in love with Canlit exclusively, especially when it's so ponderously self-conscious that it begs to be loved just because it's snowy.

I post book excerpts on my Goodreads blog, updates for readers at allthatchazz.com and I have a blog for writers at chazzwrites.com. I also shoot a weekly comedy podcast at the world called Self-help for Stoners which features excerpts from my work (available on iTunes.)

Not that you have to care about all that, but now you know a little more about The Magic That is Me. I'm looking forward to learning more about you and about what you're reading. Life's too short to make commitments to long, bad books.

*Eddie Izzard does a fabulous James Mason impression on YouTube (much better than mine.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OT4FZU... Starts doing James Mason about 1:30. NSFW, though.

Michael Anson (michaelanson) I'm Michael Anson and just about a month ago, I was accepted at Northwestern University's Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in creative writing. I read a broad range of novels, from mysteries to classics to books that have been turned into movies. I started a book and film club at my local library where we watch the film on the third Tueday of the month and compare and discuss the book and film on the following Thursday.

Much as I hate shameless self-promotion, I have a blog at: www.michaelanson.wordpress.com

Glad to be part of this group,

Without flooding this post with links, here's just one: http://ancientcanada.com. This site has more on the book, links to everywhere you can purchase it (please leave a review if you do!), and the a section of fables. The fables section is free, only on http://ancientcanada.com, and new ones will be added regularly. Thank you!

Larry Closs (larry_closs) | 1 comments Hello,

I am the author of "Beatitude," just published by Rebel Satori Press.

Set in NYC in 1995, "Beatitude" explores the evolving relationship between two young men fascinated by the unfettered lives of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and the Beat Generation. As the two are irresistibly drawn together, they find themselves forced to confront the same questions that confounded their heroes: What do you do when you fall for someone who can't fall for you? What do you do when you're the object of affection? What must you each give up to keep the other in your life?

"Beatitude" has been getting great reviews. You can find out more on my site at www.larrycloss.com. The trailer I produced is here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-1ybT...

There's also a giveaway for two signed copies on Good Reads that runs through December 15. I'm looking forward to being a member of this group!

Michael Anson (michaelanson) I am amazed how many authors there are as part of the James Mason. A bit overwhelming, but interesting as well that there are so many creative artists and readers who both love books and love to talk about books. Does anyone know (Rick?), how the group was named "The James Mason Community Book Club?"

message 4229: by Boyd (new)

Boyd Morrison | 1 comments Thanks for the invite, Rick! I'm a thriller author based in Seattle, and after Rick read my adventure novel, THE VAULT, he asked me to join. It's great to be a part of a group that loves those old-fashioned things called books.

I would say my books would appeal to readers of Clive Cussler, James Rollins, Michael Crichton, and Steve Berry. There's a bit of science content in each one because I'm an engineer myself, and my Tyler Locke series are action-adventures delving into historical mysteries.

My website, www.boydmorrison.com, has more info about me and my books. I'm looking forward to being part of the conversation!

Thanks Michael- I agree we have an amazing group of readers and writers!
As far as the name- when I started the Group in Oct of 2009, the original name was THE JAMES MASON CLASSIC BRITISH BOOK CLUB- as I was and am a great fan of British Lit- and James Mason is my favorite actor- and I wanted to dedicated the Group to his career and memory. As the Group continued to grow and grow and grow! we started to expand to include all genres and many diverse topics- so I had to change the Group name to avoid confusion, hence- THE JAMES MASON COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB was born! It was not even an option for me to remove James Mason's name as doing my small part to keep his memory alive was key to my starting the group.

message 4235: by Anne (last edited Dec 11, 2011 07:35AM) (new)

Anne (annemarigold) Thanks for the invite Rick.

I live in Spain but was born and spent most of my life in Bath, England.

I've always been a avid reader. More so now I am retired. I mostly like crime but definitely without any paranormal element. I grew up on Dorothy Sayers, Michael Innes, Josephine Tey, Ngaio Marsh and others of that generation. I also read all the Agatha Christie's when younger although preferred these others. There are too many writers I like now to name them all but my daughter introduced me to American women writers so I developed a taste for Sara Paretsky, Janet Evanovich and others. I used to like Patricia Cornwell but I dislike the later ones. I don't think she does present tense very well as so few do IMO and her characters have become repetitive.

Oddly Scotland seems to produce excellent crime writers and favourites include Ian Rankin and Christopher Brookmyre.

One of the most original authors I have ever encountered is the late Steig Larsson. The Millenium trilogy is outstanding and his death, possibly murder, is a great loss to literature and humanity.

I like to intersperse crime with all sorts of other types e.g. Aga sagas (sorry Joanna Trollope but it's a convenient shorthand), some chick lit if that includes Maeve Binchy, Elizabeth Jane Howard and Mary Wesley, bonk busters like Jilly Cooper, family sagas (or are they romances?) from Penny Vincenzi and Barbara Taylor Bradford, nice long stories from Edward Rutherford and Ken Follett, spies by John le Carre and many more.

I sometimes read "greater classics" but often have to be in the mood for those. The longest book I've ever read is "War and Peace" and I'm still not sure what I think of it - definitely very Russian! I certainly won't be reading it again!

(edited a few times for typos!)

Rick Daley | 6 comments Hi all,

In between bouts of insanity (some people call it "writing") I like to read novels by Cormac McCarthy, Stephen King, James Patterson, Harlan Coben, Michael Chabon, Jonathan Franzen, Stephen Frey, and many more.

My debut novel, "The Man in the Cinder Clouds", is available on Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com in print and Kindle/Nook. It's a new spin on the legend of Kris Kringle and how he came to be known as Santa...It's kind of like Batman Begins, but with Kris Kringle.

Reviews have been great so far from kids and adults. If you ever believed in Santa, you need to read this story to find out how it all started.
