Hi All! I joined the group a little while ago and never seem to get the chance to post before I get swept up in the pulse of the day, but can I just say, WOW! What an interesting group of readers and authors here--and all these great books to recommend! So here’s a few of my favorite authors: Jane Austin, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson (hence my debut novel, The Exile of Sara Stevenson, 2010 Ballantine/Random House), the late, great Patrick O’Brian and his Aubrey/Maturin canon (happy, happy sigh), Dorothy Dunnett (one of the best to ever pick up a pen and write historical fiction in this author’s humble opinion), Mary Stewart, Daphne du Maurier, Thomas Cahill (the Hinges of History), others and others I’m not remembering, and George MacDonald Frasier! Has anyone read his Border reiver history, Steel Bonnets? It helped inspire my latest tale, The Angel of Blythe Hall (Ballantine/Random House 2011) which, aside from being set in Scotland in the early reign of James IV and delving into all manner of shenanigans, is, at its essence, a Border tale. In fact, if you’re interested there’s a book giveaway on Goodreads that ends in 2 days! Here’s the link:

I wanted to say hi to all the members and also thank Rick for asking me to join. I'm a little different than most, I'm actually a dog, my name is Bo. I am the author of Bad to the Bone: Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger. It's the first nationally published (Kensington Books/Citadel Press) book written by a dog in non-fiction. I also want everyone to know it's dedicated to all the rescue and shelter workers who make this world a better place, one animal at a time. I donate a portion of my proceeds to dog rescue. Oh, and no one dies at the end. I look forward to getting to know other group members and authors. Woof!

Hello! This is really odd~ today for no real reason I was just thinking about James Mason and his role as Captain Nemo in Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", and what do I find in my e-mail inbox? An invitation to join your Club, kindly sent by one of your fellow members, M. Newman. Is it an omen? Maybe! (Spell "Nemo" backwards and what do you get?)
I am pleased to meet you all, and I hope to add something constructive and entertaining to the group, time permitting!

Thanks for the kind invitation to join your group. As a new Goodreads author, I appreciate the opportunity to chat about anyone's books, even mine. The first two are a series but the stories stand alone. The Privateer Clause and the Return of the Sea Empress, which Rick will soon be reviewing. I hope he takes note of the five dollar bill at page 59. Of course it is my fond hope that no one will actually be scared off from going on a cruise, you will find that the passengers of the Sea Empress were actually bored to tears on their cruises until things started blowing up all around them, then bookings went through the roof! But I'll let Rick lead the way, we have a Goodreads giveaway right now on the Privateer Clause and one just now ending in a couple of hours on Return of the Sea Empress! A third book of fun, fish and nonsense is The Chesapeake: Tales & Scales. It is a collection of 53 short stories which have appeared over the years in The Chesapeake. Have fun and read like your life depends on it!

Rick, thanks for the invitation. I am the author of Curbchek a compilation of short stories, each a case handled by me during a 28 year career as a police officer. My up coming book is the same type of format and covers my time in the Gang task force. I like books that are about a character who over comes the odds and succeeds.
i don't know if i introduced myself -- my name is annie, i live in the REAL washington -- washington state, and i've been an avid book reader since i was a wee sproout -- probably around age two or three.my father used to read to me every night, and one night he was tired [i was around two or three] and he skipped many pages in the book. i remember that i got out of bed, took the book and showed him where he was supposed to be in the book, even sounding out the words. he was shocked.
by the time i got to the first grade, i was reading at a fourth or fifth grade reading level. the school wanted to advance me, of course, but my mother refused. she didn't want me graduating from high school at age 14 or 15. so, i ended up being bored at school for all those years, and just kept reading and reading and reading all on my own.

Looking forward to participating in the group.

Hello,My name is Julia Anderson I am the author of "The Election". This is my first children's book and I am currently working on my second book. The holidays are coming up and my children's book would make a great gift.
I look forward to making friends for all you have to do is send me a friend request and I will accept. I also love to read all types of books. I find that the authors here on Goodreads are the best by far. Everyone that has sent me a friend request or that I have sent a request to if they accept my request or if I accept there's I will add your book to read. I order anywhere from 500 ebooks a year anyway for myself and my children. So if your book is in a ebook format please let me know for I am always looking for a good book.
I recently finished reading an author here on Goodreads and his book is awesome. I am currently reading another Goodreads author's book and so far both hands down the book is wonderfully freshing. So keep the friend request coming and the awesome books too.

Thank you Rick for inviting me to the group. I hope I can make some positive contributions. I'm the author of among other books, The Inspector Vaara series. Putnam is my US publisher. I have ten publishers worldwide and some of them have world rights, so I guess you can buy the first two, Snow Angels and Lucifer's Tears, in over twenty countries. The next, Helsinki White, will be released in the US in March. The noir crime series is set in Finland, where I have lived for thirteen years.
