exactly- VERY WELL PUT JAMES!

there have been only a few instances in which I have had to delete posts because of utterly inappropriate language, ect- Diversity of thought and membership is a keystone of James Mason group- civility and respect for the fact that with so many members- we have folks from their early teens to their 90's - and yet with tens of thousands of posts- over the past two years- only a small handful have required me to take action- and these were ones by people who seemed to be trying to provoke (WITH SOME PRETTY TERRIBLE WORDS) - rather than express their thoughts - a KEY difference- As I have such respect for our membership- I truly cannot recall the last time this issue came up- hence- I do not see an issue and leave it to each member to decide. and to use a cliche...end of issue! LOL
lets get back to welcoming new members!

A world shattered by a banking crisis. You definitely have your thumb on the pulse of modern civilization. It would be interesting to see how people sustain themselves inside one building over generations.

Sure, I'll try it.

Marianne Wheelaghan (httpwwwgoodreadscomMarianneW) | 13 comments Just popping in again to say hello. Gosh, so many new faces and from so many places. I can't remember if I said but I'm from Edinburgh. Love James Mason and films and reading and writing books and chatting, which is why I am here ;o)
Regards writing - my debut novel, The Blue Suitcase, is an historic fiction, based on diaries I found by my mum after her death, and tells the story of a girl growing up in Nazi Germany from the perspective of a Silesian German Christian. I'm doing a Q and A in GoodReads session on in a couple of weeks if anyone wants to ask any questions about it (I'll remind you again nearer the time but feel free to ask now too.) I'm presently working on my debut crime novel, set in the Republic of Kiribati. I used to live there – anyone heard of it? It's due out next year so am busily writing away.
That's all for now. It's stopped raining at last here in Edinburgh, which has got to be good :o)

Julie Rose (juliekrose) | 1 comments Hello everyone, and many thanks to Rick for the invitation!

I'm Julie K. Rose, and I write mainstream and historical fiction with a touch of the fantastic. My novel The Pilgrim Glass is here on Goodreads, and
is the story of an artist, a priest, and a photographer, and the restoration of a stained glass one summer in Vézelay, France. This is no ordinary glass, however; it has a strange, almost hypnotic effect on them, changing them in positive and destructive ways.

I enjoy reading in a variety of genres, from classics to contemporary mainstream to fantasy to historical, as well as their many sub-genres. I'm also a former reviewer for the Historical Novels Review.

So looking forward to checking out your reviews, recommendations, and discussions!

Ned Hayes (nedhayes) | 1 comments Thanks to Rick for the introduction -- what a gracious host! I'm an avid reader -- tend to read 5-6 books at one time. Right now, I'm reading some 19th century books like Emma, and Dracula (the original), as well as more contemporary writers like Margaret Atwood and Anita Diamant. If you like these writers, drop me a line, and we can catch up!

I also write books -- my novel Sinful Folk (a novel set in the middle ages) is coming out in 2012 -- the first 2 chapters are available in a Sneak Peek at http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...

If you like what you read, you can get a Preview E-Book of the entire book by "liking" the book's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SinfulFolk

There's a lot more about me and my bookish interests up at http://SinfulFolk.com -- I look foward to reading more about your books and your interests here!

pauliree Hello all, I have been a member of this group for a while now but never actually got around to looking at any of the content - I could be here for years! I am an avid reader of all aspects of SF/Fantasy, with a little YA thrown in. I was a member of a Paranormal Romance group but it got taken over by the teens and the posts are lacking in punctuation and full of spelling errors. I know that is picky but it is one of my bugbears. This is a site for readers and I would assume that anyone who is passionate enough about books to be on this site can certainly string a sentence together! OK now I've had my rant I can relax.

I do manage to write some reviews but I mostly just read, read, read. I try to at least rate everything I finish (which I sometimes don't do as I often read several things at once and get bored very easily)

My reading interests have changed over the years and I think I will eventually find myself old and grey wanting to read mysteries with not an inch of the paranormal about them :)

If you are still reading this I want to be your friend!! Hello everybody

Rebecca Johns | 10 comments Hello everyone. Thanks so much to Rick for the invite.

I'm the author of two books of fiction. The most recent, The Countess, came out in paperback last week from Broadway Books. A "retelling" of the life of notorious Hungarian "blood countess" Elizabeth (Erzsebet) Bathory, it's been nicely received in the several countries where it's been published so far, including Italy, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, and Romania.

My first novel, Icebergs, was a 2007 PEN/Hemingway Finalist. The story of the families of two men who both survive a plane crash in WWII Labrador, it was a genuine labor of love for me, since it was based on the real-life story of my grandfather. (More about my books at rebeccajohns.com)

I teach full-time as a creative writing instructor at DePaul University in Chicago, where I live with my husband and daughter. We're native Chicagoans and happy to be home after many years of traipsing around the country, including New York, Iowa and Michigan.

I hope to "meet" many of you here at the James Mason Community Book Club.

Rebecca Johns

message 3887: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Johns | 10 comments Thanks D.d. Nice to meet you. I read all genres, "literary" and mainstream as well as fantasy and sci-fi. I teach a speculative fiction class here that's a lot of fun, Ursula LeGuin and Stephen King and David Mitchell.

Some of my favorite books include Mitchell's Cloud Atlas, Atonement by Ian McEwan, The Transit of Venus by Shirley Hazzard, (hmm, apparently I have a preference for novels by British authors or set in GB) Lolita, and A Confederacy of Dunces. You?

I like pretty much anything with romance and adventure. Georgette Heyer is my favourate regency romance author and I liked 'The Sooner' it's a sci-fi by S.G. Alan, an indie author. I like my books PG which can make finding novels a little difficult!

message 3889: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Johns | 10 comments Ha! I know what you mean by looking for pg. The x-rated stuff doesn't interest me much either. The best sex scenes, I've found, tend to be awkward and/or funny. Otherwise they just end up florid.

I think that it takes away from the story as well as being embarrassing, the characters are so busy that the plot never really happens!
