Hi Philip! My name is DeeDee and I write too! Your books sound like they would be something I would read, can you tell me more about them?

My pleasure DeeDee, Sorry about the delay, I was busy Facebooking & etc.Why don't I begin with my latest? Eland Dances is brand new, I self published it as an ebook this week. This is the end result of many draughts & revisions, hours with my critiquers and some time on Authonomy.com.
In this my protagonist, Peter Fitt, brings the Sixties ethos of 'Make Love not War' up against the harsh realities of post-colonial Africa. He finds some truth in ancient beliefs handed down in his family, and struggles to promote his Green Revolution (ie modern agriculture) & vaguely Hippie ideals against the competing forces of Red communism, Black Power, the White man's way, and traditional cultures. Also, he has to fight his own flaws.
Partly based on my own experiences in that time & place.
This is what one of my early critiquers said recently- "I’ve read Eland Dances a couple of times and could read it a couple more. I get more out of it each time.
Pete’s desire to right wrongs, and the slightly magical circumstances that help him do that, make for an exciting and satisfying story. The sixties flavour and background of African politics, from an author who knows the time and place, add extra interest."
You can read a sample on Amazon.com amazon.co.uk or on smashwords.com

Wow! I hope you find success!
Philip wrote: "DeeDee, what about your stuff? What have you written?"Yay, I love talking about my book!!! 'Broken City' is set in the near future after a banking crisis has brought the world to a stand still. Deeta was born after the world went crazy and has never left the tower block she was born in because it's not safe. Her best friend is Tom, but Tom is keeping secrets and not everything is as it seems....... I've published on amazon and really pleased with the response I've had, I can hardly believe that people are reading MY book! I have a second book that I'm uploading in november, It's set in saxon England and is the start of a series. and I'm half way through my third a dystopian novel complete with Mad dictator!
Hi Phillip, Eland Dances sounds very interesting. I also grew up in South Africa and am now an Australian. But I was a 'rooi nek.' I write about my adventures in the wilderness/ the politics and working in the media in both Black and White South Africa. The book is "Goodbye, Africa..."It is 3.45 am here in Thailand and I am about to embark on a 12 hr bus trip into flooded N. Thailand to conduct a Drama Camp for a week.
Intersting that you self-published as an ebook. I have recently finished The Wizard of Zee, set in ancient Gondwanaland and am thinking of doing the same. Do you recommend doing that. Cheers, Desmond -www.desmondbishop.webs.com
Hey! Another multi-genre person! Sound interesting Dee-Dee.Banking crisis? Never happen.
Mad dictator? Is there another kind of dictator?
Saxons? Nice Angles on England.
I will have to take a look on Amazon, though truly I don't have time to read, being a slow typer and with a couple of projects (ssh until they're readier) and this promotion stuff to do. Plus grandchildminding.

HaHaHa!
The promotion stuff takes up so much time doesn't it? I try to write between e-mails! But it does make it so much slower.
Desmond, I do recommend self-publishing as an ebook; take a look at Smashwords.com, download the free Style Guide, and follow it. Some hair pulling will ensue, but once you get it right your book will be distributed to several large retail ebook outlets. Should your sales do well, agents and publishers will seek you out.

If I can do it, anyone can!!!

Morning D.d – to answer your question I suppose it was because I was born across the river from L’Pool (Birkenhead) and I grew up knowing most of the buildings that had been created / paid for by the profits from slave trading. I originally started ‘Ice King’
as a naval bookin the mould of Hornblower, but as my research went deeper and deeper in to Liverpool’s history it dawned on me that the anti-slavery movement would have frightened the life out of the ‘great and good’ of Liverpool. So ‘Hornblower’ was ditched and I went down the slavery road.
Many of the Liverpool places mentioned in the book existed and still do, but in some cases with a different name today. The gentlemen’s club did exist as described in the story, but today the location is different, but the club is still active. I now live in Sydney, but visited Liverpool in 2004 (my wife who grew up in the ‘Pool’ had never been back for 25 years after emigrating) and when I discussed the club with a friend she (our friend) told me that she knew the club's location. I visited the street and realised that the club had moved from the address in Ice King.
One of the characters in the book (who existed) moved from slave trading in to banking, which over the years grew and grew to become the Midland Bank which is now part of HSBC – how many of us realised that we placed our money with a bank that began from the profits of slavery? Another bank that grew out of slavery is Barclay's Bank :-o)
BTW – North Point in the story is now known as the Pier Head. With hindsight I should have included a glossary at the end of the book to clarify certain naval terms and places that still exist. This suggestion came from some of my readers.
Some of the characters in Amazing Grace are in Ice King but only briefly.
Hope the above hasn’t bored the life out of you. :-o)
Please let me kknow when your book is available on Amazon.
cheers
Geoff

Not at all! It really is sad how 'man dominate man to his own injury'. And I think its important that we remember that these things happened, to make sure nothing like it happens again.

Good morning,I would like to thank Lynn for inviting me to join. By way of introduction, I am an author of a fairly well-received science fiction thriller called Falling Star and also released the inaugural collection of cartoons from my cartoon blog, "There is Strangeness in the Universe" in May. Because of my background as an ocean research engineer, environmental engineer, lawyer, and banker, my reading tastes are all over the place. You can read more about me at my website http://fallingstar1970.wordpress.com or enjoy my cartoons at http://strangenessinuniverse.blogspot....
My Goodreads blog is called, "The Eclectic"
Hope to get more involved as time goes on.

Thanks for the invite. My preferred stories are of futuristic society, spaceflight and non-human intelligence. However, writing Squad V let me test the concept that even vampires should be bound by the rules of biology and physics. Along with that I used the opportunity to demonstrat that any enemy can be beaten once one succeeds in transforming the battlespace to nullify the other's advantages and amplify their weaknesses.I have an Associates degree in biology and tutor at Salt Lake Community College. My interests include history, science, philosophy, mythology, martial arts as well as military tactics and technology.
Rod Sirling learned, after his idea of doing the Emmett Till story was rejected by the networks, that the proverbial Martian could say what regular people or people in authority could never get away with. Even the Russian character in that era wasn't allowed to say certain things about American society. But if the speaker was green they had leeway to point out exactly what they thought. "Squad V" does that for modern times as a metaphor of counter-terrorism. Vampires, vampire hunters and regular people caught in the middle are forced into hard circumstances where everything they know spins out of control.
When starting the story in early 2005 it never occurred to me to see a federal agency like FEMA fumble so badly, but that in and of itself did work for the story set to take place no earlier than 2009. Working with the CDC and other departments whose "officially" off-duty personnel are on loan FEMA serves as the shelter agency for a policy of total irradication of all Pathogenic Ribochondrian Vector [PRV] carriers. But while carrying out that mission a critical truth came to light as I wrote the story.
"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster..." - Nietzsche
All three books of the Squad V series accumulatively address the evolutionary response to a species of seven billion medium sized omnivores with no population regulatory factor in their ecosystem. Predation, disease and our own sociopathic behaviors come together into a trifecta that tops the food chain.
I hope you enjoy it.
-John Steiner

with almost 5,000 members- I trust that we have a diversity of ages- It is important to me that James Mason group be welcoming and appropriate for all ages- sensitive issues have been discussed with this in mind- so I see no issue with age- if one loves books- one belongs!
