Thomas Barnes (thomasbarneswrites) | 9 comments Thanks for Rick for inviting me to join the group. My name's Thomas, and I've been a reader all my life. Right now I'm hitting the Shakespeare hard, but my tastes are diverse. I'm also a starving writer. I'm looking forward to getting recommendations for some new book and discussing the ones that I love!

Hello, all new writers/readers! It's great to see some new faces on here since I joined, a page earlier.

D.d -- sorry took so long to reply. Yes, I write YA. I love the YA genre because it's so diverse, and you have so many different people who read it -- young teens, older teens, young adults, and the normal adults. PG is good for anybody, I think. I personally don't like to read books that are on the far side of PG-13.

message 3754: by D.D. Chant (new)

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 61 comments Me too Alexandra! All my books are PG and as it is I find it hard letting my Dad read them! (No, no Dad! Don't read that bit, they hold hands!!!!) What are your books about? Sci-fi? Historical?.....?

message 3755: by [deleted user] (new)

I like to change up genres depending on the book I'm writing, but most of them have a science fiction/horror air about them (though not gory -- more old-fashioned). I also like romance, but nothing...sexual.

My newest book is the start of a science fiction series called the Foxfire Chronicles, titled Shadows of Past Memories. It's really a story about how two best friends are moving on with their lives after surviving ugly pasts -- though to shake things up, one has a secret past, and is being hunted by an otherworldly madman. There are a lot of science fiction elements, but I didn't make things complicated, as some sci-fi books do. I wanted it to be something that everyone can enjoy.

Though my next book, out soon, is a Christmas novel, and is therefore more fantasy.

Here's my website, if you're interested in checking the books out. You can also read the first few chapters of Shadows of Past Memories: http://www.alexandralanc.com

Marianne Wheelaghan (httpwwwgoodreadscomMarianneW) | 13 comments Hi Readers and Writers,
thank you for the invite. I love James Mason and so am glad to be here and look forward to meeting you all. I love chatting about books and writing (can't shut me up usually!) but this week is a very busy time for me because as well as being a writer, I run an online creative writing school, www.writingclasses.co.uk, and our new session of courses starts today, which means this week is going to be super busy! So, if I am not around for a bit, forgive, me, but I will be back :o)

Steve Robinson (steverobinson) | 46 comments Hi everyone,

I was invited to join the group by my Goodreads' friend, Karen (Kew). I'm a writer as well as an avid reader, having just turned Indie writer this year after trying to break into traditional print for the last six years. I managed to secure an agent with my debut book and many nice things were said about it by the publishers as it went the rounds, but it was rejected for one reason or another. I certainly gave the trad route a fair try, but it's no fun keep being told you're not good enough by the few people who pull the strings. So I thought I'd go it alone and let the readers decide. And it's been great.

You can find out more about me on my website here: http://www.steve-robinson.me/Welcome.... or I have an author profile on Amazon.

Apart from reading and writing I'm a bit of a wine lover - in moderation of course :o) - and I play golf and like to ski when I can. I started a project a few months ago to build a writers retreat log cabin in my back garden and although it's taken far longer than I'd imagined it's all coming together in time for the colder weather.

I'll start a thread in the author section soon if anyone wants to drop by for a chat - you'll have to bring your own wine though.

Best wishes,
Steve

In the Blood

Probably to make some money - designer/makers aren't much better paid than writers, and there are fewer famous ones. But both jobs have their rewarding side :o)

Alan (plumboz) I click on the "comment" link and directly above the little box where I can do so I see this

"to becoming a chef and never find myself without a book.

I absolutely love Jane Austen and PG Wodehouse."

Well, if I had any doubts about this being a congenial spot those two sentences (well, one full and one partial) dispelled any and all doubts.

Not particularly interested in becoming a chef, but I love to cook. Being without a book is unthinkable. And both Ms. Austen and Mr. Wodehouse are high on my short list of Favorite Authors.

I read all sorts of stuff, including some of the great YA books my daughter reads, historical biographies, classics from the likes of Dickens, Stevenson, Collins, Twain and Conrad, wonderful, wise and witty Pratchett, I'm a Tolkien fan from way, way back, and right now I am rereading All Creatures Great and Small and discovering all over again just what captivated me when the book first came out.

I am a retailer by way of earning a living, a writer by way of not being able to help myself, and a guitarist by way of needing a way to annoy my family.

By the way, what inspired the use of Mr. Mason's name here?

Best,
Alan

Darci (darcihannah) | 3 comments Hi, I’m Darci Hannah and I’d like to thank Rick for inviting me to this group. What a fantastic gathering of readers and writers! I’ll just come out and say it: I’m a book lover too. I adore well-written, mesmerizing, compelling, thought-provoking reads with characters that linger in the imagination long after the last page is turned. I love books so much that a few years ago I was compelled to become an author too. I currently have two works of historical fiction (The Exile of Sara Stevenson (2010) and The Angel of Blythe Hall (2011)) and, y’know, always have another in the works. I’m inspired by those great authors who have blazed the trail before me, and hope that someday I just might inspire another to pick up a pen and share their stories with the world as well. Currently I read a lot of history (hazard of the job) but still manage to squeeze in good fiction. Right now life is a precarious balancing act with kids and family taking first priority, squeezing reading and writing between cooking and laundry, while still attempting to carve out a few precious moments for a hike, paddle or whatnot. I apologize in advance for not being online more; but really, there are just so many hours in a day... Oh, and here's a link if you're curious Darci Hannah

message 3779: by Geevee (new)

Geevee Hi,
I've just joined this group. I love books: reading, collecting, walking around bookshops, reading book reviews etc - so this group is great, and has already helped expand my TBR list. My wife thinks my interest (obsession with books) makes me barking mad.

I have a keen interest in history, especially social and political around the Victorian and early 20th Century European, plus British Monarchs and miltary history. I also like the early space programme to the end of Apollo, and read crime novels and historical fiction, plus British Sci-Fi (50s-80s) and the odd book about music and sport in society.

So great to have you here Alan and Steve!!

Alan- excellent question- when I started the group 2 years ago- I named it in memory of my favorite actor- James Mason- and it focused mainly on British Lit- and the original name was The James Mason Classic British Book Club- We grew so very much and expanded our genres and discussions to include ALL areas and genres- so I had to change the name of the Group- but my tribute to James Mason was "non-negotiable!" so I decided on The James Mason Community Book Club- because- as you read our many posts- we truly are a Community in every sense of the word- and the original inspiration for the group- my desire to honor the memory of my favorite actor- James Mason- remains in place.

Hi DeeDee, I'm old school. I've never lost the joy of when I was a child sitting in the bookshop for hours on end looking at and choosing books. I also work with technology all day so it's a nice escape - he says writing this on my laptop! I am looking forward to contributing to the group.

A bit about me and my novel – Being a Scouse (who now lives in Sydney, Oz) and a lover of history, is it any wonder that my first novel is set in Liverpool. Check out Ice King and the reviews & comments on Amazon US & UK sites, as well as my own site.

I was happy to wake up this morning to find that on Amazon UK Kindle, Ice King, under historical fiction / romance slavery is #1 and # 6 in the US. Under Adventure slavery in the US it is #6 & in the UK it is #9, which goes to prove that statistics to an author is like a lamp post to a drunk – more for support than enlightenment! :-o)

I have just spent quite a long time trying to add a picture to this message from those that I have on my GR home page - any help would be appreciated.
cheers
Geoff

I also write, again in several genres - short stories, some Sherlock Holmes (Conan Doyle emulation) novelettes, and so far two novels, both of which are somewhere between thriller and adventure, though one has a touch of science fiction and the other leans more to Literary fiction.
