Robert W. Walker (wwwrobertwalkerbookscom) | 10 comments I probably should have added that I am a graduate of Wells High School, Chicago and went on to Northwestern University (I suspect the only one from Wells that year to do so), where I finished undergraduate work in English Educ., and went on to get my Master's in English Education. Have now taught some 35 years or so and still at it along with the writing. I got into teaching to support the habit - of writing.

by the way, I host a thread for Indie authors/publishers of Kindle books and ebooks at the following where over 133,000 views have occurred since March when I put it up. Lots of 'brilliant' ideas on promoting Kindle titles in particular found here.

Bette Isacoff (bette_isacoff) | 3 comments Hi everyone,

I was introduced to this site by a professor in my MFA in Writing program. Though I have publishd articles in such magazines as The American Kennel Club GAZETTE (for which I was also a breed columnist) and Dog Fancy, I am just completing my first book. it is a three-strikes-you're out -- except we aren't -- story of my 41 yr marriage to a man who was, when we met, 4 yrs younger (17 to my 21); a different religion (he Jewish, I Catholic); and at a very different educational level (a senior in high school to my senior in college). It is being professionally edited.

Though I read primarily nonfiction -- memoirs, biographies, medical and dog related material -- like Alex above I think PG Wodehouse is terrific.

My favorite genre is Classics, particularly European Victorian classics. Love all things Russian! lol. Just completed Wilkie Collins book "The Woman in White" it was great! Before that I read "Fall of Giants" Follett's new tome. Fantastic! Am now going to delve into Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann. In the past few years, I have only read rarely due to my reading for teaching and my reading for classes I am taking...but have decided I need to find the time time get back into it again...

Nothing like a good book....!

Gary (mahoye) Hi, all. Nice to see such a vibrant and enthusiastic group. I am a Canadian poet/novelist. My first novel, Animal Magnet was published last month by Emmerson Street Press. Admittedly, I prefer to read "literary" works (whatever that really means) although I have been know to delve into and enjoy some genre fiction as well. Here's hoping that my eyes and mind are opened to some new names and works.

Hi Kailee, I'm glad you want to write! It feels so good to get a story down. There are millions of tips, but I think that a primary need is not to overdo it with words. Read your sentences over and over, trying to make them more concise. Never use multiple adjectives to describe one thing; instead, find an adjective that covers them all.

Another bit of advice- don't hold back, thinking you are not a writer. I say- start a book today. The first draft will be rough, but go over the story repeatedly, smoothing it out. It will get better and better. I read that Ernest Hemmingway said to rewrite thirty times! Best wishes.
