You're sitting at home one evening, reading a book. Minding your own business. Ding, dong. Now, who could that be? You open the door.

description

There is a small cone-shaped basket of flowers hanging from the doorknob. It looks like one of the neighbors has resurrected that old tradition of leaving a May Day basket. Now if you only knew the meaning of flowers you might be able to figure out who left the surprise.

Examples -
Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice: yellow carnation, wisteria

Jonquil, I've always wanted to do the maypole thing and I've never had the opportunity. I went to a nearby grocery store to see what flowers they had available, and the florist hadn't heard of May Day baskets. I plan on making a very nice arrangement for my cousin's wife who has been so good to me these past few months.

I just finished a novella, The Princess Problem. Here are a few lines from the story (abridged):

"Aren't you going to ask me the meaning of a blue rose...?"
"What is the meaning of a blue rose, Jonas?"
"...a blue rose is a symbol of love, prosperity, and wishes granted...In Chinese folklore, the blue rose signifies hope against unattainable love."

I don't know if any of that is true, but it sure made a cute part in the story.

Edited to add: I checked Wikipedia to find out more about blue roses. The author used phrases straight from the Wiki article. My estimation of the author went down a notch :(

*grin* I wonder if there is an app that will let you put certain flowers together to see how they look.

This intrigued me so I googled flower arranging app. There are many and there's at least one for each platform.

On a roll, I googled Maypole dances. We just missed the annual one at the Fort Meade FL Elementery School. There is traditional Maypole dance music online and apparently regional gatherings celebrating Beltane often feature a Maypole dance. Apparently I'm running with the wrong crowd if Lanelle or I want to Maypole dance.
