2015 - Readathon Two Date: April 25, 2015 - 8AM to NOON - Check-In - THIS IS CHECK-IN ONE

Please let us know who is reading during these this period of time.

Let us know the following:

Name of Book and Author or books and authors:

Genre or genres:

Number of Pages Read - Start Page and Finish Page for this four hour period.

Don't forget the proper citation - just do the best you can and we will assist you.

How much time did you read during this block of time:

Also, your location in the world and timezone

Did you complete any books during this time frame and what were they?

So for example:

The Jewel in the Crown by Paul Scott
The Jewel in the Crown (The Raj Quartet, #1) by Paul Scott by Paul Scott Paul Scott - Genre: Historical Fiction - pages start 1 - finish 80

If you finished a book - let us know that too and make sure to get it added to your readathon shelf so you can get credit for it. If it is added properly it will show up on your shelf. You have to make sure to have selected a readathon shelf and when you are done with the first book for your readathon - make sure to add the completed date and that the book is read versus currently reading.

It will show up on your shelf if you have done this properly.

Remember wherever you are you can participate in the readathon.

And if you only have one hour or four hours or plan to do this for the entire 24 hour period taking of course breaks for eating and sleeping - you can join for however long you want to read. We want to keep track of the books completed, the books started, the books in progress, the number of pages read by all, and the different genres. Great fun and this is only the second readathon - we will use the same readathon challenge for all of them so you can see your readathon shelves grow.

Additionally these books that you complete on the readathon can be added to other shelves for the Japan or India challenge or the 2015 50 Books Challenge or the goodreads yearly challenge - the sky is the limit. Any genre is welcome.

Remember folks this is the check in for anybody reading during the hours of 8AM until Noon on April 25th, 2015 (wherever in the world you are - use your time zone). If you want to get credit for any reading done during these four hours you must check in on this thread - Checkpoint 1. But for the check in to count - you must post between the hours of 8AM to Noon on April 25th in the time zone that you are in. This is the Checkpoint for those hours on April 25th. To get credit for these hours this is the thread you must post on

REMEMBER AT LEAST ONE CHECK-IN MUST REFLECT THE FOLLOWING TO BE COUNTED IN THE READATHON AND OF COURSE YOU MUST CHECK-OUT AT THE END.

Make sure to answer the following:

Name of Book and Author or books and authors:

Genre or genres:

Number of Pages Read - Start Page and Finish Page for this four hour period.

Don't forget the proper citation - just do the best you can and we will assist you.

How much time did you read during this block of time:

Did you complete any books during this time frame and what were they?

Also, your location in the world and timezone

Hello Revanth - welcome India - I see that you are ahead of us and it is my fault that I did not realize that India was participating - I see that you are trying to complete Checkpoint One which is the first Check In Checkpoint. This is for April 25th from 8AM until Noon - after you complete the template here by Noon and at Noon you proceed to Checkpoint Two.

Where in India are you located - are you in India, what city and what is your timezone. We need to know your location in the world and your timezone.

You have the name of the book and the author that you are reading - so that is good but you did not do the citation.

Here is how the book which you have added should look:

Cyrus the Great by Jacob Abbott by Jacob Abbott Jacob Abbott

We can help you with citations as you get more practice. But if you check the Help Desk folder - and look for the thread titled Mechanics of the Board that should help you further.

You have the genre noted.

You are missing how much time you spent reading during this check in period. How much time did you spend reading from 8AM until Noontime on your April 25th. You are missing that information.

Did you complete any books during this time frame and what were they.?

It looks like you did not complete any books during this timeframe - so you would answer - No I did not complete any book during this timeframe

We also need to know where in the world you are - I am assuming that you are in India - just name your city and tell us your timezone.

For example I would answer - NYC - Eastern Standard Time.

Now if you also read during any other period of time - make sure to find the appropriate Check In time slot and check in there too.

The following link is the Second check in Checkpoint - did you read during Noon to 4PM on your April 25th? If so - next go here:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

But if all you did for the readathon are the pages above - then you must now proceed to the MANDATORY CHECK OUT THREAD - HERE IS THE LINK:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...--

Here is a sample template that you should follow for checkout:

a) Please list the books completed if any and genres and how many pages in the book that you read during the readathon. Only pages read during the readathon itself count towards the readathon page total but the book when completed (if during the readathon) can count towards books completed. This is the tally thread for all of the checkpoint segments. Tally and list books and authors where you have read any pages.

b) Let us know the books you read or are reading - start and finish pages and genre.
You can read 10 books if you like - if you want to read them each a little bit at a time that is also allowed but you must let us know your start and end pages and all of the book details. Also tally them up here on the checkout thread.

c) How much time did you read total during the 24 hour readathon? This is the tally thread for all of your checkpoints in the readathon.

d) List all of the books completed over the total readathon - citations please - title and author.

e) Tally all of your pages read and how much total time did you read and how many pages

f) Let us know your timezone and location.

So here is an example:

a) Completed one book: The Jewel in the Crown by Paul Scott - Genre - Historical Fiction - read all 482 pages for readathon. Total time spend reading during the readathon was 7 hours or all 24 hours or 1 hour.

The Jewel in the Crown (The Raj Quartet, #1) by Paul Scott by Paul Scott Paul Scott

Genre was historical fiction.

Metro NYC - Eastern Standard Time

or

b) Completed one book: The Jewel in the Crown by Paul Scott - Genre - Historical Fiction - read all 482 pages for readathon.

The Jewel in the Crown (The Raj Quartet, #1) by Paul Scott by Paul Scott Paul Scott

Metro NYC - Eastern Standard Time

and started the next book

b) The Day of the Scorpion - Genre - Historical Fiction - read from 1 - page 200 - have not completed book yet.

Paul Scott by Paul Scott The Day of the Scorpion (The Raj Quartet, #2) by Paul Scott

or

b) The Day of the Scorpion - Genre - Historical Fiction - read from 1 - page 200 - have not completed book yet.

Paul Scott by Paul Scott The Day of the Scorpion (The Raj Quartet, #2) by Paul Scott

Note: In all of these instances - there are totals and stats being counted.

First we will make a list of books completed during the readathon even if the book had already been started before the readathon - if you finished the book finally during the readathon they count to that total, then second, we count the total number of pages read during the readathon, and then we count and list all of the different books started during the readathon, and finally the different genres read during the readathon and what these genres were with a count. And then your location and timezone.

We will also list all of the proud participants in the first History Book Club Readathon.

Congrats.

FOLKS FROM THE PREVIOUS READATHON WE HAVE COME UP WITH THE SIMON TEMPLATE CREATED BY ONE OF OUR ADMINS - IT MAKES THINGS EASIER - JUST DO IT LIKE HE DID - HERE IS THE SAMPLE:

Here is what Simon did for his checkout and I think this is a pretty compact way of doing your tallies if you have not already done them. This is the MANDATORY CHECK OUT THREAD.

I replicated his post here:

The Nixon Defense What He Knew and When He Knew It by John W. Dean by John W. Dean John W. Dean

Final Tally - 105 pages (all books)
Total Time Reading 2.45 hours
Genres: Non fiction and Politics - 1
Total Checkpoints Utilised - 2 Checkpoints and One Checkout
Total Number of Books Competed - 0
Total Number of Books in Progress - 1
Location: UK, GMT

WHAT YOU MUST DO:

a) Fix and complete all missing parts and answer all questions for the first check in that you missed.

b) Decide if you also read during the next timeframe which would be Check In Two for Noon to 4PM on your April 25th and if so proceed to that thread.

c) If all you want to do now is to check out because you did all of your reading yesterday - your April 25th - then you must proceed to the Check out thread - Checkpoint Seven and do your tallies. This is not a Check Out thread - this is a Check In thread.

d) To complete the readathon successfully - you have to post and answer the questions and the template for at least one Check In thread and you must also post the tallies on the Check Out thread.

We are here to help you.

Spain and Croatia - it is 9:16AM - you should be posting now - post your template here first and continue reading and update it.

You should have been reading for one hour - it is only 3:17AM for the Eastern Standard Time folks in the United States so the readathon for those folks is not beginning for another 5 hours.

Folks everytime we do this we always find folks who want to participate but fail to join and set up their shelves properly so that they can get full credit:

You must join!

Very important:

How To Join In:
Click on the title at the top - The HBC Readathons. Please then join by simply signing in at the bottom and say how many books you plan to read for one or more of the readathon dates - there will be six readathon dates throughout the year; then create your own personal shelf to add the books which you would like to tackle during one readathon or more readathons. That is all there is to it and goodreads will keep track. Become your own marathoner in reading books on the readathon dates and we will keep track of your progress in terms of titles of books, number of books, number of pages, and different genres. Give it a whirl and see how much reading you can get done and take a stab at that big "to be read" pile of books that we all have.

Note: Don't forget to set up your shelf first and then add the name of that shelf here when setting up the challenge for your readathon.

And here are some links to the Readathon folder which will be updated:

OK Jose - glad to have Portugal accounted for. Welcome Jose and Portugal.

You have the citation and book name and author - sorry I made a mistake here - you did not include the author's name above the citation but the citation is good.

It should look like this:

Baltasar and Blimunda by José Saramago

Make sure to correct post 17 and then make the same correction on all of the check in templates from One through Six.

I have also just noticed that you are missing the Genre: category - so go back and add Genre: and the specific genre it belongs to and make that change throughout all of the Check In Checkpoints from One through Six.

You have the start and finish pages and you have the total read
You have time spent accounted for
You have responded about books completed
You have the location and the timezone
You have successfully completed all of Checkpoint One aside from what I just discovered - you can move on to Checkpoint Two. It is 1:47 PM in your local time - so you can continue reading in Checkpoint Two until 4PM your time on April 25th. However make the changes here and on all of the other threads.

Here is the link to Checkpoint Two:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

This is the template for all of the check in threads - One to Six - the check out template has its own separate template

Make sure to answer the following:

Name of Book and Author or books and authors:

Genre or genres:

Number of Pages Read - Start Page and Finish Page for this four hour period.

Don't forget the proper citation - just do the best you can and we will assist you.

How much time did you read during this block of time:

Also, your location in the world and timezone

Welcome Kathy from the Peach and Empire of the South state of Georgia.

Just type the name of the book above the citation and place it in bold.
You have the citation
You have the genre noted
You have the start time - just at 11:30AM add the end time
You have the start time which is good - you need at the end of this time segment to update and add the ending page for this timeslot
You need to add the amount of time you actually read during this timeslot
You have your location and timezone added
You will have to let us know if there were any books completed during this check in time segment and if you did complete a book - you must type the title (bold) with author and add the citation

Once you complete the above and do the updating and the time is Noon on April 25th, you can then move on to Checkpoint Two - Check In Two:

But place above the citation - look at Francie's example - the title of the book in bold followed by the author's name.

As far as whether it counts as a book- it could if you found a book citation where the book only contained the book itself without critical commentary otherwise it cannot if you did an excerpt. I am sure that if you look you might find the book by itself. But you would have to add the name of the book and author like Francie did and then underneath you would have to change your citation. Otherwise it would be difficult to count it as a book because you would have to find a book which you could shelve and date as completed in goodreads. Your call.

Trying to put things together as a template will make things a whole lot easier for all of the remaining check in - checkpoints. You could use the same template for Checkpoints One through Six and just keep updating it. The Check Out has a different template because that is for tallies etc. and I would highly recommend using the Simon template for Checkout to make your life easier - and that would be Checkpoint Seven.

I like your asides and quotes but you need to add all of the following:

Name of Book and Author or books and authors with the title of the book in bold followed by the authors name preceded by the word by:

Then the citation or citations the usual way.

Genre or genres:

Number of Pages Read - Start Page and Finish Page for this four hour period.

Don't forget the proper citation - just do the best you can and we will assist you.

How much time did you read during this block of time:

Did you complete any books during this time frame and what were they?
You must answer the question and name and bold like above any completed with their full citations.

Also, your location in the world and timezone

So make sure to edit message 27 and get in all of the details in template form as you will see some of the more experience readathoners doing. It will make your life easier and more enjoyable as you move along. Lots quicker too.

Around 11:30 AM go back in and edit and add all of the above so that you have enough time - I usually start updating a half hour before the end of the time segment for the checkpoint.

At Noon once you have completed the above and added all of the details - then you should progress to Checkpoint - Check In Two which starts at Noon and goes until 4PM

Welcome Michael from the Wild Rose Country of Alberta, Canada

You need to have the name of the book above the citation and in bold as well as the author (see Francie's) - both books
You have the citations
You have the genre noted
You have the start page - just at 11:30AM add the end page
You need to add the amount of time you actually read during this timeslot
You need to add the total number of pages read or listened to
You have your location and timezone added
You will have to let us know if there were any books completed during this check in time segment and if you did complete a book - you must type the title or titles (bold) with author and add the citation or citations below.

So if you completed both books - then say Yes, I completed 2 books beside - Books Completed?: And then you must add them again - titles (bold) and authors with the appropriate citation below each specific one.

Once you complete the above and do the updating and the time is Noon on April 25th in your location in Alberta, you can then move on to Checkpoint Two - Check In Two:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

You are doing well.

Katie - welcome from the Show Me State of Missouri.

You are doing a great job with the Check In Template but not so good with getting signed up (smile) - you are not on the list so that you can get credit for the readathon on your personal readathon thread and with goodreads. Without joining and signing up and seeing your name and avatar on the Readathon sign up list which has almost 60 names on it - you have not even set up and named your shelf or entered how many books you want to read for the readathons this year in 2015. So I want you to get credit for all of your work and be officially signed up for the readathons this year.

This is what you must do: - Read below:

If you have done this correctly, you will see your name and your avatar in the list of folks participating in the readathons this year. Make sure you have entered the number of books that you want to read in the readathons - not just this one and have set up your shelf and its unique name.

Note: Don't forget to set up your shelf first and then add the name of that shelf here when setting up the challenge for your readathon.

And here are some links to the Readathon folder which will be updated:

Katie - now let us look at your template:

You have the name of the book above the citation and in bold.
You have the citation
You have the genre noted
You have the start page - just at 11:30AM but you will need to add the end page for this time segment and Checkpoint
You need to add the amount of time you actually read during this timeslot
You need to add the total number of pages read or listened to
You have your location and timezone added
You will have to let us know if there were any books completed during this check in time segment and if you did complete a book - you must type the title (bold) with author and add the citation

Once you complete the above and do the updating and the time is Noon on April 25th in your local area and timezone, you can then move on to Checkpoint Two - Check In Two:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

You are doing well and have done a very good job with your first attempt on the Check In Template - That makes it easier as you go along because you can do a copy and paste and update accordingly. You would be using the Check In Template for Checkpoints One through Six which are Check In Checkpoints but note that on the mandatory Check Out thread there is a second different template which is used for all of the final tallies - I would advise for the mandatory Check Out thread - Checkpoint Seven that you use the Simon template - it is succinct - has all of the line items and will make your life easier.

Good effort and good progress so far but make sure to join and get signed up.

Hello Lynette - welcome to the Peace Garden State of North Dakota.

It is currently 11:47 AM in Verona, North Dakota which is in the Central Time Zone - you are an hour behind the Eastern Standard Time folks so you have about 13 more minutes to Checkpoint One before you have to move to Checkpoint Two.

However, you have to use the Check In Template for Checkpoints One through Six including this thread and Checkpoint.

Let me include what details need to be in your template which you can reuse and update as you go through the Checkpoints.

Here is what needs to be included. You can take the time necessary even if you run into the Checkpoint Two timeframe as it is taking me longer than expected to get everybody on track. So just do the best you can in editing and getting things right and I will continue to try to give you helpful assistance as we move through the readathon. Just do your best and ask any questions that you need to and you will catch on soon enough.

We are delighted to have someone from North Dakota joining us in the Readathon - it is so much fun to have folks from all over the world with us as well as all over the United States from all of the various regions.

Make sure to answer the following and use the following template:

Name of Book and Author or books and authors:

Genre or genres:

Number of Pages Read - Start Page and Finish Page for this four hour period.

Don't forget the proper citation - just do the best you can and we will assist you.

How much time did you read during this block of time:

Did you complete any books during this time frame and what were they?

Also, your location in the world and timezone

Check the others who have posted and see how they have used and set up a template for themselves. Check Skeetor's in message 22 or my own set up of the template. You need to set up your template and respond to all of the points above.

What you can then do after you have posted all of the answers and details of the template is to do a copy and paste and update it accordingly for each of the
check-ins for Checkpoint One through Checkpoints Six. You update the template for each check in - in terms of start and ending pages, total pages, books completed, etc with citations. Follow the directives of the ones which were acceptable right away.

Teri (teriboop) Great job on the citation, Ebony. One note, you don't need to put the title text in, just the image art. So in this case you could just do:

Defending Jacob by William Landay by William Landay William Landay

Happy reading!

Lynette - your post - message 30 needs to be updated and details added. You can do this now and we will give you the time to do it so there are no worries.

You only added the name of a book but no author and no citation.

You should edit your post and include it this way:

You only added the following - The Last McKenna as the name of the book - however I could not find it. I did find this book which may be the one you were referring to:

Return of the Last McKenna by Shirley Jump

Return of the Last McKenna by Shirley Jump by Shirley Jump Shirley Jump

The above shows how to post your book - put the title in bold and include who the book was by like I showed above.

Then you add the citation the way the group does it - book cover, one blank space, the word by, one blank space, the author's photo if available and the author's link which is the author's name in linkable text.

The next thing you need to do is to add for each book he genre of the book you are reading.

Genre: Romance and Women's Fiction

Start Page and End Page: - Post the start page - where you started reading during this time period - Then post the last page you read at Noon in your local timezone.

The amount of time you spent reading or listening to the book during this four hour period: Most folks take some sort of break during the four hour period so most will not post total reading time for a check point as 4 hours but something a bit less.

Books Completed during Check In Checkpoint: List the books completed during this four hour period with the name of the authors. Bold the titles and include the author's name.

Underneath do a proper citation - book cover, one blank space, the word by, one blank space, the author's photo if available, and then the author's link which the
author's name as linkable text like the sample above.

If you did not complete any books during this four hour timeframe - then just post No or None

Finally your location:

Location: North Dakota and Central Time Zone

Number of Pages Read during this check in time period: Enter the total number of pages you read from 8AM to Noon in your local timezone.

You can take your time to update your edit and we will help you get the template right because then it will take you very little time for all of the Check In Checkpoints - One through Six.

Very glad that are with us and you will get the hang of things very soon.

After you update the above you can proceed to Checkpoint Two - Check In and copy and paste and update your template accordingly.

Here is the link to Check Point Two - Check In:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
